THE TAKE

Power Electronics Valencia host Galatasaray Café Crown in a pivotal Group J for both teams. For Galatasaray, which is winless thus far in the Last 16, the game is literally a must-win contest since a loss will mathematically end the team’s chances of reaching the quarterfinals. Meanwhile for Valencia, a loss would drop head coach Neven Spahija’s side from a share of first place in the group. Valencia enters the game tied with Hapoel Jerusalem and UNICS Kazan for the Group J lead at 2-1, but those two teams meet this week in the Israeli capital. Valencia used a big first half and a dominant showing from big man Matt Nielsen to down Galatasaray in Istanbul 78-82 in the last game before the break, but the hosts were without one of their top players, point guard Darius Washington, who was lost to injury on the day of the game. But with Washington back, head coach has Cem Akdag has his foursome of stars – Washington, Simas Jasaitis, Mike Wilkinson and Rado Rancik – ready to go in addition to fifth starter Evren Buker, who turned in a career-best 25-point effort on 5-for-5 three-point shooting in Washinton’s absence. Valencia’s advantage is in its depth with practically two players at every position. Center Kosta Perovic joins Nielsen, Serhiy Lishchuk and Florent Pietrus in forming a tough frontline that will not be east for Wilkinson and Rancik to crack. At small forward, Valencia’s Victor Claver is big, strong and fast, attributes that serve him well on both sides of the floor. He will try to use them against Gala sharpshooter Jasaitis. In the backcourt, Nando De Colo is the team’s top scorer, Rafa Martinez is fearless with the ball and Thomas boasts incredible shooting range. They will join forces to tangle with Buker and Washington. Valencia’s home-court advantage and depth make it an automatic favorite this week, but with Washington back and the team’s back to the wall, expect to see a mighty battle from Galatasaray as it looks to save its season.
