The Take

This will be the first ever official game between these teams. It is also a homecoming of sorts for Galatasaray center Aleks Maric, who won the 2011 Euroleague with Panathinaikos. It could also be a historic night for another Galatasaray big man; Kerem Gonlum is climbing the competition’s all-time rebounding charts and is set to move into the Euroleague’s career top 10 in games played this week, too. The athletic Patric Young and sweet-shooting Zoran Erceg round out a Galatasaray frontcourt, which Panathinaikos will counter with Esteban Batista, Antonis Fotsis and James Gist, who will make his 100th career Euroleague appearance. Each team has a reliable veteran playmaker; Dimitris Diamantidis for the Greens and Carlos Arroyo for the visitors. The game could be decided on the wings, where scorer A.J. Slaughter and the savvy DeMarcus Nelson play key roles for Panathinaikos against Sinan Guler, Justin Carter and Vladimir Micov. The two teams are tied in the standings, so there will be plenty to fight for on Friday in Athens.

Dimitris Diamantidis will tie former teammate Kostas Tsartsaris for third place on the Euroleague’s career list of games played this week with 239.

James Gist will make his 100th career Euroleague appearance.

Diamantidis is the all-time Euroleague leader in steals with 398 and about to become the first player ever with 400 steals.

Diamantidis needs just 2 three-pointers to catch former teammate Sarunas Jasikevicius for seventh place on the competition’s all-time charts. Saras retired with 315 career triples.

A.J. Slaughter has made at least 1 three-pointer in eight straight Euroleague games.

Slaughter has made 14 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Nikos Pappas has made 12 consecutive free throws in Euroleague action.

Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul

This will be the first ever official game between Galatasaray and Panathinaikos.

Zoran Erceg leads the Euroleague in minutes played per game this season at 32:39.

Erceg has made 51-of-54 free throws (94.4%) in this year’s Euroleague.

Erceg has recorded at least 1 steal in eight consecutive Euroleague appearances.

Erceg has made at least 1 three-pointer in 14 of his last 15 Euroleague games.

Carlos Arroyo has made at least 1 three-pointer in 14 of his last 15 Euroleague games.

Arroyo has scored in double figures in four straight and 11 of his last 12 Euroleague appearances.

Kerem Gonlum needs just 1 more rebound to catch Mike Batiste for sixth place on the Euroleague's career rebounding charts. He enters this week's game with 1,116 rebounds.

Gonlum is 3 offensive rebounds away from becoming just the second player in competition history to 400. Real Madrid's Felipe Reyes is the Euroleague’s career leader with 491 offensive boards entering the week and counting.

Gonlum will move into the Euroleague’s career top 10 in games played this week with his 223rd appearance. He will tie Gianluca Basile and Erazem Lorbek for ninth place.

Aleks Maric won the 2011 Euroleague with Panathinaikos. He spent a total of two seasons at the club and also won a Greek league title and the Greek Cup. He played for the Greens between 2010 and 2012, when he was a teammate of current Panathinaikos guard Dimitirs Diamantidis.
