THE TAKE

One team will gain its first victory in Group B and remain alive in the hunt for the Last 16 when winless Lukoil Academic hosts Barons/LMT Riga. Head coach Lubomir Minchev's Bulgarian champion dropped to 0-2 as it was unable to handle Dynamo Moscow in a 94-78 loss on the road. Lukoil's defense could not stop the dynamic Dynamo, which shot a blistering 64% from the field to go along with 23 assists. Minchev's men shot a respectable 48% from the floor, but committed 18 turnovers and were in general overmatched. Forward Riste Stefanov poured in 18 points and big man Kenny Adeleke collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals. Forward Todor Stoykov added 14 points. But they did not get enough support to beat a top club like Dynamo. A similar performance should be enough to beat Barons/LMT. And a victory at home is an absolute must if Lukoil wants to advance from the group. Barons/LMT Riga meanwhile dropped to 0-2 after getting thrashed by Unics Kazan 76-55 on the road. Head coach Karlis Muiznieks's team allowed Kazan to shoot 53% from the floor and forced just 12 turnovers. But the main problem was Muiznieks's men shooting a miserable 31% for the game - even though Barons/LMT did outrebound Unics 41-37. The main weapon for Muiznieks was forward Demetrius Alexander with 17 points and 11 rebounds, though he struggled to make just 6 of 16 shots. Guard Giedrius Gustas added 16 points, but the duo did not get much help otherwise. The other three starters combined for 12 points and the bench added 10 points. Riga also struggled from the line where it made just 14 of 25 (56%) foul shots. All told, Barons/LMT must improve in all facets of its game if it hopes to beat Lukoil.

Demetrius Alexander - Barons/LMT RigaBarons/LMT Riga captured its first victory of the Eurocup Group B, using a 0-10 fourth quarter run to earn a 75-88 win at Lukoil Academic. Barons/LMT improved to 1-2 in the group while Lukoil dropped to 0-3. Demetrius Alexander led Riga with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals while Charles Rhodes and Martins Kravcenko both added 15 points and Karspars Berzins chipped in with 12 points. Andrew Adeleke paced Lukoil with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Riste Stefanov had 16, Anthony Akins 14 and Dimitar Angelov and Nenad Canek both had 11 points in the losing effort.

Alexander opened the game with the first basket and Akins scored Lukoil's first two points to even the contest. Alexander and Giedrius Gustas made it 3-6 before Adeleke made a lay-up to bring the hosts to 5-6. Kaspars Berzins and Alexander pushed Baron/LMT ahead 5-10. Cenak trimmed the margin to 8-10 but Berzins scored again, Kravcenko knocked down a triple and Rhodes surged Riga ahead 8-17. Hristo Nikolov knocked down a three-pointer and Angelov converted a three-point play to get Lukoil back within 14-17. But Todd Abernethy drained a triple for the guests and Alexander's foul shot left Riga ahead 14-21 after one period. Angelov started the second quarter with a three-ball but Rhodes hit two lay-ups and a three-pointer as the Barons/LMT lead was 21-28. Adeleke scored a lay-up and then Stefanov's long ball trimmed the deficit to 27-30. Berzins would knock down a triple and Corey Smith followed with a dunk and three-pointer as the guests pushed ahead 27-38. Adeleke answered with two straight lay-ups before Rhodes's basket gave Barons/LMT a 31-40 lead going into the break.

Alexander continued his fine game with a triple to open the third period. Stefanov scored and Cenak knocked down a three-ball to bring the margin to 36-43. Alexander and Adeleke swapped baskets and Stefanov made it just 40-45 with two foul shots. But Rhodes hit and Alexander converted a three-point play to make it a double-digit game. Two Angelov free throws had it at 45-54 only to see Gustas and Rhodes bring Barons/LMT ahead 45-58. Akins made two foul shots and two baskets - including a three-point play - to cut the deficit to 54-61. But Kravcenko nailed a three-pointer to give Barons/LMT a 54-64 lead after three periods. Kravcenko started the fourth with a triple but Stefanov knocked down three straight three-balls and the lead was down to 63-67. Gustas stopped the run but Akins hit a basket and then Nenad made two foul shots and the lead was just two points - 67-69. Adeleke made it 69-71 before Kravcenko and Canak swapped triples for a 72-74. But Barons/LMT took over the game. Alexander scored a lay-up to start a 0-10 run with Berzins converting a three-point play. Gustas and Berzins then combined for three foul shots as the lead grew to 72-84. Akins stopped the run but Kravcenko hit another triple to put all doubts to bed.

"I'm not satisfied with the game we showed tonight. We had the chance to step up and come back in the game on a few occasions but once we came close to tying it up we were unable to stay focused. At situations when the difference dropped down to just a few points, we either allowed Barons to score an easy basket or we turned it over on the offensive side to find ourselves in the same situation of trying to melt down Riga's lead. We are presently in a tough situation having in mind that we had our point guard Akins, playing his first game with us. He has been with us only for the last couple of days but yet we were forced to use him for 31 minutes, not having any other adequate substitution on the poit guard after Kevin Kruger unexpectedly left the team last week. However Anthony proved that he is trustworthy and a kind of player that could be relied on no matter that he hasn't been practicing for more than a month."

"This is my third time in Bulgaria. The game tonight was actually my first win from all three games that I played here. First I lost in Sofia playing with the Latvian National Team, and then I lost my second game here being the coach of Ventspils. I'm satisfied with the way we played and I want to express my gratitude to my players, they gave their best and hustled on the court all 40 minutes of the game. I think that Lukoil is a very strong team and they were well prepared for this game, but however they were not able really to oppose to our game today."
