THE TAKE

Asefa Estudiantes (4-1) hosts Galatasaray Café Crown (2-3) Tuesday night at the Palacio Vistalegre in Madrid to close out the Last 16 in a game that should pack plenty of punch. Estudiantes has already qualified for the quarterfinals, but will be playing for a first-place finish in Group K. If the home team defeats Galatasaray, who has already been mathematically eliminated from the next stage, it will be crowned champion. Likewise if Caserta (4-1) losses at the hands of CEZ Nymburk (0-5) in the other group matchup, Estu will win the group and home court for the second leg of the upcoming total points quarterfinals series. Only if Caserta wins and Estu loses can head coach Luis Casimiro Palomo’s men drop to second place. Galatasaray will be looking to say goodbye to the competition with its second straight road win. Preston Shumpert has been getting it done in the backcourt and he will be probably draw a tough assignment on Estudiantes’ Tyronne Ellis. But Jerry Johnson and Josh Shipp are more than capable scorers for the visitors and Acik Tutku provides plenty of hustle. For Estudiantes, Albert Oliver and Jayson Granger form a solid backcourt combo, but it all starts with dynamic Hernan Jasen, a defensive ace who can push the tempo and score in bunches. With Jiri Welsch also on hand and the versatility of forward Daniel Clark, Estu can match up to different settings and adjust on the fly, as its second-best Last 16 offense proves. Luksa Andric and Ermal Kuqo man the paint at the center spot for Galatasaray, while forward Radoslav Rancik is a talented player in the post, with Evren Buker and Caner Topaloglu also available to deliver at the forward spot. They should both have their hands full in trying to contain high-octane scorer Nik Caner-Medlay, while big man Josh Asselin is having a strong Eurocup participation and will need to produce with German Gabriel sidelined. Galatasaray is the leading rebounding team in the Last 16 and will try to make it a trench battle, Estudiantes should push the tempo in an effort to fly by its opponent and, maybe, all the way to first place.

Josh Asselin - Asefa EstudiantesAsefa Estudiantes became the Last 16 Group K champion by edging Galatasaray Cafe Crown 71-69 in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday. Estudiantes finished Group K with a 5-1 record and was first due to its tie-break advantage against Pepsi Caserta. As such, Estudiantes will have the home court advantage in its two-way series against Cedevita Zagreb while Caserta will face Group I champion Unics. Josh Asselin led the winners with 22 points on 10-of-14 two-pointers and 8 rebounds. Nik Caner-Medley added 21 points for Estudiantes. Preston Shumpert led Galatasaray with 18 points. Estudiantes led 56-42 late in the third quarter but an effective zone defense, Sertac Sanli and an outstanding Shumpert allowed the guests to complete an outstanding comeback, 60-61. A hook shot by Ermal Kuqo made it a five-point game, 64-69, but Galatasaray went scoreless in crunch time. Asselin, Caner-Medley and Albert Oliver helped Estudiantes to get a truly pivotal win down the stretch.

Caner Topaloglu followed a layup with a dunk-and-foul to give Galatasaray an early 2-5 lead. Kuqo soon scored down low but a 7-0 run that Sergio Sanchez capped with a three-point play allowed Estudiantes to enjoy its first lead. Jerry Johnson and Caner-Medley traded baskets but a layup by Topaloglu tied it at 11-11. A three-pointer by Johnson soon restored a 12-14 Galatasaray lead. Estudiantes found a go-to guy in Asselin, who scored twice in a 7-0 run that Daniel Clark capped with a layup in transition. Johnson answered from downtown but free throws by Pancho Jasen and a fast break dunk by Caner-Medley made it a six-point game, 23-17. A buzzer-beating triple by Josh Shipp got the guests within 23-20 after 10 minutes. Luksa Andric scored in the paint early in the second quarter but a jump hook by Clark and a triple by Caner-Medley gave the hosts some fresh air at 28-22. Tutku Acik and Ty Ellis joined the three-point shootout but Caner-Medley followed a circus shot with a corner triple that boosted the hosts' margin to 38-28. Asselin sent the crowd to their feet with a two-handed dunk but Shumpert kept Galatasaray within 42-30. The guests improved their defense late in the first half and free throws by Acik and Shipp fixed the halftime score at 42-34.

Asselin buried a six-meter shot soon after the break and soon added a one-handed slam in transition for a 46-35 score. Kuqo scored in the paint that Asselin erased with an alleyoop dunk. Caner-Medley stayed on fire with his own slam but a three-pointer by Acik kept the guests within 50-40. Asselin - who else? - dunked it again and a power basket by Caner-Medley broke the game open, 56-42. Shumpert tried to change things with free throws and a put-back layup, making Estudiantes call timeout at 56-46. Evren Buker found his first points on a bomb from downtown but a free throw by Clark gave Estudiantes a 57-49 margin after 30 minutes. Sanli took over with a layup and a three-point play, as Estudiantes have problems against Galatasaray's zone defense. Shumpert sank foul shots, added a driving layup and sank a triple that hit the rim, flew up and went down to complete the guests' comeback, 60-61, with 6 minutes left. Asselin rescued Estu with free throws and a jump hook but a turnaround jumper by Shumpert kept his team within 64-63. Haluk Yildirim buried a seven-meter bomb and Kuqo hit a hook shot for a 64-69 Galatasaray lead with less than 3 minutes left. Caner-Medley and Jasen hit free throws and a tip-in by Asselin restored a 70-69 Estu edge. The hosts used a non-shooting foul and Galatasaray could not inbound the ball, picking up a turnover with 4 seconds left. Oliver drew a foul and missed his second attempt on purpose to run the game clock down and make Estudiantes win Last 16 Group K!

Head Coaches

PALOMO, LUIS CASIMIRO
Asefa Estudiantes
"Galatasaray Cafe Crown is second in the Turkish League and unlike in our first meeting, they made their outside shots tonight. They are a good defensive team and put us in trouble, making us lose our confidence in offense. We managed to stay focused and won the game with very good defense. Our big guys have stepped up since German Gabriel got injured. Nik Caner-Medley and Josh Asselin had a good game at both ends. The fact that we haven't spoken about German in press conference until now is a good sign. I was more motivated than ever to finish first and get the home court advantage more than avoiding Unics. Cedevita beat Unics in Kazan tonight and knocked off Gran Canaria."
