THE TAKE

After brilliantly earning its Turkish Airlines Euroleague spot in the qualifying rounds, Mapooro Cantu re-enters the competition by hosting Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Thursday in Desio, Italy. Cantu will be playing consecutive Euroleague seasons for the first time in almost three decades (1982-84). These teams face each other for the first time ever, which adds even more spice to this game. Cantu is without big man Marko Scekic while Olimpija has a full roster ready to fight for a valuable road win. Olimpija needs to find the way to slow physical guard Jerry Smith, who helped Cantu to reach the Euroleague with his aggressiveness, driving skills and athleticism. He will share the point guard duties with Nicolas Mazzarino, whose experience and shooting range is critical for Cantu. Dominic Waters and Teemu Rannikko must be ready to step up against Smith. Rannikko can change any game with his know-how and shooting from downtown. Olimpija's first option on offense will be Jaka Blazic, who has been unstoppable so far this season. Olimpija finished the game on a 21-7 run with 4 three-pointers for its first opening road win since at Unicaja Malaga in 2002 - a streak of seven straight defeats. Aron Baynes collected 16 points and 12 rebounds, Dylan Page scored 17 points, Sasu Salin added 15 points and Jaka Blazic chipped in 12 for the winners, who will head home next week to face Fenerbahce Ulker. Cantu committed only 8 turnovers but shot just 38 percent and allowed Olimpija to shoot 55 percent for the game. Pietro Aradori led the way for Cantu with 16 points and 8 rebounds while Manuchar Markoishvili added 13 points and Jeff Brooks had 10 in the losing effort. Cantu, which reached the regular season through the qualifying rounds, next plays its first road game of the season next week at Panathinaikos.
