THE TAKE

Budivelnik and BG Goettingen will clash Tuesday at the DS Meteor in a matchup that has them both standing a game apart in Group J. Budivelnik is hoping to rebound at home after a Week 1 road loss against Aris, 85-69, where the 28 combined points by forward Zach Morley and Lamayne Wilson were not enough to avoid defeat. Goettingen (1-0) beat Le Mans 75-71 thanks to forward Mike Scott’s 27 points, which helped earn him Week 1 MVP honors. Budivelnik will need playmaking guard Billy Keys to regain the form he displayed at the start of the regular season if it wants to improve its offensive numbers. Michailis Anisimovas and Andriy Agafonov also are capable of adding to the point total, but the latter was held scoreless in Greece and should come out more aggressive versus Goettingen. Head coach Josep Maria Berrocal’s squad will have plenty to account for, as the visitors are loaded at the forward spots with sharpshooting Robert Kulawick and Scott. Jason Boone is a rock at center, where he can score in bunches and excels as a shot blocker, and Trent Meacham can fill it up on any given night from the perimeter. Budivelnik will trust the center duties to veteran Andy Betts and will try to improve its meager 15% three-point shooting effort against Aris. The home crowd should be a plus, though Goettingen already won twice on the road during the regular season.

Lamayne Wilson - Budivelnik (photo bcbudivelnik)Budivelnik registered its first win in Last 16 Group J by downing BG Goettingen 68-56 at home in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine on Tuesday. Both teams now tie at 1-1 in this group. Lamayne Wilson paced the winners with 19 points on 5-of-6 three-pointers. Zach Morley added 14 and 9 rebounds while Andriy Agafonov had 13 points for Budivelnik. John Little led Goettingen with 14 points. Trenton Meacham added 13 while Jason Boone had 11 for the guests. Goettingen led for the best part of the first quarter but a jumper by Morley gave Budivelnik its first lead, 19-17, after 10 minutes. Agafonov shined in the second quarter to lead Budivelnik to a 34-26 margin at halftime. Wilson had all points in an 8-0 run that broke the game open, 42-28, soon after the break. Budivelnik boosted its margin to 58-35 early in the fourth quarter and only allowed Goettingen to rally when it was already too late.

Back-to-back baskets by Boone and Meacham helped Goettingen to get an early 0-4 lead. Wilson answered from downtown and Andy Betts scored down low but Boone and Louis Dale allowed the guests to stay ahead, 5-9. Mike Scott and Michailas Anisimovas traded baskets but another triple by Wilson made it a one-point game, 10-11. Little sank free throws but Denys Lukashov joined the three-point shootout to tie it at 13-13. Dwayne Anderson dunked it and Adam Waleskowski added a jumper but Morley followed a layup with a mid-range shot to give Budivelnik its first lead, 19-17, after 10 minutes. Anderson scored off a steal but a layup-plus-foul by Agafonov restored a 22-19 edge early in the second quarter. Meacham sank a jumper but a red hot Agafonov bettered that with a triple for a 25-21 score. The game turned into a physical battle and both teams struggled to score for a while, but a layup by Anisimovas boosted his team's lead to 27-22. Antoine Jordan shined with a put-back basket but Dmytro Zabirchenko struck from downtown and Agafonov added free throws to boost Budivelnik's lead to 32-24. A jumper by Morley and free throws by Anderson fixed the halftime score at 34-26.

Boone tried to change things with a layup immediately after the break but Budivelnik kept rolling and found a new go-to guy. Wilson sank a jumper and added back-to-back three-pointers to force Goettingen to stop the game at 42-28, after an 8-0 run. Little followed a three-point play with a jumper but a dunk by Morley and another triple by an unstoppable Morley broke the game open, 47-33. Boone kept pacing Goettingen with a jumper but free throws by Agafonov and Morley kept the hosts way ahead, 49-35. Morley followed a jumper with a layup-plus-foul and Lukashov boosted the hosts' lead to 56-35 after 30 minutes. A jumper by Leonid Stefanyshyn made it a 23-point game, 58-35, early in the fourth quarter. The outcome was clear already and both teams had started to fight for points differential, a critical issue in all Last 16 groups. Meacham and Little took over with consecutive baskets, making Budivelnik call timeout at 58-39. Boone got some help from Little and Michael Meeks to get Goettingen much closer, 60-47, with under 6 minutes left. A three-pointer by Meacham got the guests within single digits, 62-54, but it was already too little, too late for Goettingen.

Head Coaches

BERROCAL, JOSEP MARIA
Budivelnik
"We played a good game except the fourth quarter. In the second and, especially, the third quarter we showed that we can play aggressive, that we can run. This is the way we won and this is the type of game we want to play. But we need to learn, we must play to win. In the Last 16, it’s very important to win with a good margin."
PATRICK, JOHN MICHAEL
BG Goettingen
"For the first three quarters, we were not able to play our game. Budivelnik controlled the tempo. The Ukrainian guards defensively did a great job against Meacham. I have to give a credit to Lamayn Wilson for some big three-point shots. But you could see that in the fourth quarter, when we were able to get back into the game, Budivelnik unfortunately was very cool at the end of the game. We were not able to hit our free throws, and Budivelnik deserved their 12-point winning margin."

Players

AGAFONOV, ANDRIY
Budivelnik
"We knew this team was good, but in the first half we lost a bit. After that, we found our game and showed that we can play good against Goettingen. In the second and third quarters, we were very good, as we scored 15 and 22 points and let them score just 9 and 9. But after we were up by 20 points, some players thought we didn’t need to play at 100%, so we barely avoided their comeback."
LITTLE, JOHN
BG Goettingen
"Congrats to Budivelnik. They did a great job today, Billy Keys organizing the team, Lamayn Wilson making some great shots. And, basically, they were able to handle our pressure."
