THE TAKE

Bosnia-Herzegovina side KK Bosna makes its ULEB Cup debut this season in Group A. But the side is anything but a newcomer to Europe as they became the first team from the former Yugoslavia to win the Euroleague title, capturing the 1979 crown against Varese behind a final-record 45 points from Zarko Varajic. Jure Zdovc's current side has opened the Bosnian League in style with veteran center Dzenan Rahimic off to a good start. Guildford Heat is the reigning British champion and begins its first ULEB Cup season on the road in Sarajevo. Guildford didn't exist early in 2005 after folding and being saved by a group of fans. British internationals Mike Martin and Sean Williams as well as team star Brian Dux have led the fantastic charge in re-establishing Guildford on the UK map. Now, the Heat are out to prove that British teams can compete in basketball as well.

Two ULEB Cup debutantes in Group A squared off on Tuesday night as hosting KK Bosna defeated the Guildford Heat by a clear 84-68. Six players in Bosna scored 10 or more points as Lance Williams led them all with 23 points. Goran Ikonic added 11 and then four players netted 10 - Quemont Greer, Edin Bavcic, Kyle Hill and Bryan Bailey -. For the Heat, Daniel Gilbert led the way with 22 points, Brian Dux added 15 and Tony Dorsey had 10. Already in the first quarter, Bosna pulled away by 18 points and never looked back except for the second quarter, when the Heat seemed to be back to the game, but it was only a mirage as Bosna cruised to its first ULEB Cup win ever.

The game outcome seemed a no brainer when Bavcic sealed a starting 14-0 run after 5 minutes. Carlton Aaron broke the spell for the visitors but the score soon showed a 23-4 after Williams' basket. The Heat would have to improve a lot to have any chanes as Dorsey closed the first quarter with a 29-11 score. When Bailey had a basket and foul situation for a Bosna 21-point lead at 34-13, it looked like the guests were in for a comeback as Gilbert and Dorsey boosted the Heat basket by basket throughout the second quarter until a 47-37 halftime score. In the second half, the Guildford Heat has already their rival measured but the experience of Bosna players allowed the hosts to maintain safe margins until the final buzzer. Dorsey tried to keep the Heat alive at the end of the third period with a 64-52 score, and in the last period, Dean Williams made it an 8-point game at 64-56, but eight straight points by Williams put Bosna in a safe place for good and secured the hosts' first ULEB Cup win in their history.

"Congratulations to Guildford on a very good resistance. We were afraid of this match, as the first match in any competition is very hard. Also, we were watching previous Guildford games and knew we were facing an opponent that knows exactly what are they after. Our team started the game with an early lead, but couldn't keep up the tempo for the whole 40 minutes. We had a lot of mistakes and a bad free throw percentage and that is something we will have to work on. I think Williams played a good game, maybe the best since the beginning of the season."
