THE TAKE

Olympiacos Piraeus will try to do its part and hope for some help from a rival as it aims to finish atop the Group A standings when the regular season ends on Thursday. The Reds host Le Mans at the Peace and Friendship Stadium near Athens, Greece, needing a win and for Maccabi to beat Unicaja by less than 26 points to clinch the top spot in the group. But head coach Panagiotis Giannakis’s men could slip to third place with a loss. Meanwhile Le Mans will end its season regardless of the result. The visitors will nevertheless hunt for their maiden road win after picking up their first win of the season last week. Dewarick Spencer netted 25 points and Brian Chase had 21 to lead Le Mans to a 92-88 win over Air Avellino. It was the club’s second-best scoring effort of the season to a 93-98 loss against Olympiacos in November. Lynn Greer peppered the nets for a season-high 26 points in that game for the Reds. Olympiacos will surely be happy to return home after losing its last two road games, including a 96-83 decision at Maccabi last week. The story of this game could be how Le Mans responds to the depth of Olympiacos, which averages nearly 10 points more per game than the visitors. Although Le Mans features plenty of scoring options, how fresh the likes of Spencer, Chase or David Bluthenthal will be at the end of the game could have a great impact on their chances of an upset. The Reds will try to overpower Le Mans by going with Greer, Yotam Halperin, Milos Teodosic and Theo Papaloukas at guard, where Le Mans responds with Chase, Spencer and teenager Antione Diot. Even with forward Josh Childress questionable this week, Olympiacos has Georgios Printezis to step up at small forward, while Nikola Vujcic, Sofoklis Schortsanitis, Zoran Erceg and Bourousis fill in the paint. Le Mans counters with Bluthenthal and Malaye Ndoye at forward and Alain Koffi, Joao Paulo Batista and Pape Badiane inside. Olympiacos is the only team that needs this game, which coupled with its home-court advantage makes it the favorite. Nevertheless, the ability to play without consequences could help Le Mans turn in a special performance that could lead to a surprise win. All signs point to a high-scoring and fun to watch encounter that should produce plenty of highlights.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos
  • Center Nikola Vujcic is the only current Olympiacos player that has played in the French League. He helped Asvel Basket win the French national championship in the 2001-02 season.
  • The Reds met Le Mans for the first time in the 1978-79 season. They lost on the road, but they came up big to win at the old “Papastrateio” court and to reach the European Champions Cup final six for the first time in their history.
  • Big man Ioannis Bourousis has now scored in double figures in eight consecutive games this season.
  • Guard Theo Papaloukas has recorded at least 5 assists in eight consecutive Euroleague games and at least 4 assists in 10 straight.
Le Mans
  • David Bluthenthal was a teammate of current Olympiacos players Nikola Vujic and Yotam Halperin at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Bluthenthal played three seasons in Tel Aviv – all with Vujcic and two alongside Halperin. They were all teammates on Maccabi’s 2004 Euroleague championship side and on last season’s runner-up side.
  • Bluthethal’s best offensive rebounding game in the Euroleague came against Olympiacos in the 2006-07 season. Playing at the time for Fortitudo Bologna, Bluthenthal grabbed 5 offensive boards.
  • Guard Dee Spencer achieved his Euroleague high in three-pointers against Olympiacos last season. Spencer, then with Virtus Bologna, hit 6 triples in Athens in a loss last November. He averaged 18.5 points on 50% three-point shooting against the Reds last season. Spencer drilled 4 threes and scored 19 against Olympiacos earlier this season.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Le Mans is a very athletic team that has played many good games so far, but some results disappointed them. Of course, we want to beat them combining a good performance. Our mind will be only in our game, anything that happens in other games simply happens. We have the ambition to complete the regular season with a win and then we will talk about the future at the Euroleague Top16 draw."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"After a good home win last week against Avellino, we would like to finish our Euroleague season on another positive note. Obviously Olympiacos will be motivated to win in order to have a good final ranking, but we must show that in any circumstances we are a good team and will make things difficult for them. Concerning our own individual situation, we are slowly but surely getting back to playing the way we want to. The confidence seems to be back and the wins are starting to come as well. Hopefully we can finish well in our national league and make up for what was a relatively disappointing Euroleague season."

Players

ERCEG, ZORAN
Olympiacos
"Le Mans is coming to Athens with no pressure. They don't have anything to lose or actually to win in our home court. We didn't play well in Tel Aviv and as a result we are not holding the luck in our hands. We are obliged to beat Le Mans and if the other result works for us, then everything will be much better. If not, life goes on. We will wait for the draw and I am sure that during the Top16 we will pay our duty as a team. Despite who comes to our way, we only think of winning. Nothing else."
NDOYE, MALEYE
Le Mans
"Last week’s win home against Avelllino is a big monkey off our back. We really felt a true relief after a lot of close defeats earlier in the competition. We wish to go on this way these following weeks. First we’ll try to stay in the game in Olympiacos. It could be a big prestige win for Le Mans and we absolutely have to finish this Euroleague regular season leaving a good image."
Dewarick Spencer - Le MansLe Mans finished the season on a high-note with a 68-78 win over Olympiacos Piraeus at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday. Le Mans started the season with eight straight losses, but will surely want to remember how it finished with back-to-back wins. Olympiacos meanwhile dropped to 6-4, but still took second place in Group A and will continue on to the Top 16. Le Mans played with surprising energy led by Dewarick Spencer’s 20 points and Alain Koffi, who with 15 points and 13 rebounds recorded his fourth double-double in his last six games. Lynn Greer and Yotam Halperin paced the Reds with 15 apiece in defeat.

Three minutes after the tip-off, the score stood at 0-2 in favor of Le Mans as both teams were executing extremely poor on the offensive end. Koffi added another pair of free throws to make it 0-4 before Theo Papaloukas scored Olympiacos’s first point in the game after four-and-a-half silent minutes. Greer and Zoran Erceg made it 4-4, but the guests continued to feed the ball inside with Joao Paulo Batista recording their first basket to make it 4-6. Nikola Vujcic connected with a nice sky-hook, but it was after his assist to Giorgos Printezis that Olympiacos took its first lead. Koffi was there for Le Mans, though, netting a triple. Spencer added a jumper to make it 10-13 before the slow-rhythm, defense-oriented first period ended at 12-15 with the guests at helm.

Yotam Halperin - OlympiacosA tip-in by Pape Badiane was soon answered by a powerful post move by Sofoklis Schortsianitis at 14-17. However, it was obvious that Le Mans had control of the game's tempo. Jeremy Leloup nailed a three-pointer, but, the hosts reacted with a 12-0 streak punctuated by Milos Teodosic's corner-triple, Schortsianitis's two-handed dunk and Halperin's three-pointer made it 24-20 in less than two minutes. The Reds were determined to keep on rolling as their full-court pressure made it difficult for Le Mans to set up its offense. Halperin extended Olympiacos' run, but soon a triple by Antoine Diot and a basket by Batista curbed the hosts' enthusiasm at 26-25. Maleye Ndoye fired in a three-pointer to put the visitors ahead again 26-28 after an impressive 8-point-charge. Erceg dunked with force to tie it and Papaloukas connected from behind the arc for a 31-28 Olympiacos advantage. The two teams went to the lockers at 31-30 after a balanced 20 minutes of play.

Both teams found baskets in the paint before Spencer nailed a three-pointer to make it 35-37. Greer tied it within seconds, but Ndoye added another from behind the arc as Le Mans was once again dictating the tempo. Spencer chipped in the visitors third triple in less than four minutes to make it 39-43 and Brian Chase increased it to 42-47 on the break. Koffi drove for an easy layup and Chase sank back-to-back three-pointers to put the guests ahead 44-55 after three quarters.

Greer connected twice to close the gap, but Spencer reacted for the guests with a nice jumper-plus-foul. Spencer was in the zone as he added one more from behind the arc. Halperin found an easy layup to make it 54-61 as the crowd got noisy, but Le Mans was able to keep its nerve. Koffi scored twice inside to rebuild the visitors' double-digit lead with five minutes to play. Ioannis Bouroussis and Vujcic combined to get to 58-65, but Le Mans had the solutions as David Bluthenthal and Spencer combined for 5 points. Papaloukas, Greer and Bouroussis cut it to 64-71, but there was no time left for Olympiacos to do much more as Le Mans sent the Reds to their first home defeat this season.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"I don't know what to say tonight. We never showed up tonight. We are sorry for the fans that support us. Only working hard will take us to where our fans want us to be. Tonight, we didn't fight at all. We have to show respect to every team. But, we will take our lesson. I know we will work as hard as it takes to improve."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"I am happy with the win, especially because this win came over a team that could end up winning the Euroleague title. We were close to such a big win three times and we finally made it. I think that our three-season presence in the Euroleague has been a good one. And we will try to win the French League title in order to come back in the competition next year, too."

Players

PAPALOUKAS, THEODOROS
Olympiacos
"Le Mans came to Piraeus with nothing to lose. We did not have any concentration during the whole of the game and had a very bad game in general tonight. They also made some difficult shots when we tried to come back and won it. We have to focus on the next games, which will be the important ones. We finished in the second spot and we are waiting for the draw. We will try to learn from our mistakes."
SPENCER, DEWARICK
Le Mans
"We are excited to beat such a good team like Olympiacos. I think we controlled the game tempo for the most of the game and managed to build a slight deference in the third period. I felt good and executed well in the second half. We kept our nerve when Olympiacos used full-court press and sailed to the victory."
