THE TAKE

Two teams looking to bounce back from opening week losses clash at Tel Aviv’s Nokia Arena on Thursday when Maccabi Electra hosts Air Avellino. Maccabi came up short 81-79 despite a splendid debut by D’Or Fischer, while Avellino was overpowered by Olympiacos, 69-83. Fischer connected on 11 of 22 shots en route to 26 points – the most in the Euroleague all week – but the club struggled from downtown and committed 16 turnovers, two factors that were too much to overcome on the road. Now head coach Efy Birenboim’s squad will look to reverse its fortune at home. Avellino started strong in its Euroleague debut last week and led by 8 after 10 minutes, but Olympiacos’s superior depth took its toll on head coach Zare Markovski’s men who tired as the game progressed. They will have a similar issue to deal with this week in Israel. Avellino does have some things going in its favor this week. Veteran swingman Chris Warren and former Jerusalem forward Tamar Slay have both put up big performances in the past in Tel Aviv. Furthermore, the club’s veteran backcourt of Travis Best and Drake Diener is well suited to deal with the electric Maccabi crowd. On the other side, Maccabi’s star point guard Carlos Arroyo will look to make up for his disappointing debut last week as he leads the attack. Arroyo teams with scaring ace Marcus Brown, do-it-all swingman Tal Burstein and small forward Jason Williams to form a versatile perimeter attack. Avellino counters with Best, Diener, rookie Mike Nardi, Antonio Porta and Warren. In the paint, Fischer is joined by Lior Eliyahu, Esteban Batista, Yaniv Green and Omri Casspi to make up a strong and deep frontline. They will be tested by the powerful Eric Williams, veteran Marko Tusek, shot-blocking specialist Andrea Crosariol, Nikola Radulovic and Slay. A number of promising matchups stand out that could determine the way the game swings. First and foremost will be the playmakers and team leaders, Arroyo and Best. But also crucial will be the duel inside between big Batista and Williams, while the X-factors could be Casspi and Slay, two players who can play inside and out depending upon what their team needs. Maccabi is the favorite as always at home, but if the team again starts turning the ball over too much and can’t hit from outside, Avellino’s veteran players will be eager to swoop in and take advantage for a surprise road win.

GAME QUOTES

Maccabi Electra
  • Maccabi has won its last 10 Euroleague home openers. The last time the club lost its first home game in a Euroleague season was 62-84 against Panathinaikos in 1998.
  • Swingman Tal Burstein enters his team’s Week 2 game needing only 4 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career. His next assist will tie him for 25th all-time with Luis Scola on that list with 242.
  • This is the first ever meeting between these two clubs.
  • In the 2000-01 season, Maccabi guard Marcus Brown played for Italian powerhouse Benetton Treviso. During the season he was injured and temporarily replaced by his opponent this week, Peter Lisicky of Avellino.
Air Avellino
  • Guard Peter Lisicky returns to the Euroleague after an absence of nearly eight years. His last Euroleague Basketball game came in November 2000 as a member of Benetton Treviso.
  • Guard Drake Diener faced Maccabi in the semifinals of last season’s Final Four with Montepaschi Siena. Diener finished the game with 3 points by connecting on 1 long-range shots in 6 attempts in addition to 3 rebounds.
  • Forward Tamar Slay is no stranger to games against Maccabi. His first stop in Europe was with Hapoel Jerusalem in the 2005-06 season, where he started the following season as well before being cut. His best game with Hapoel was actually at Nokia Arena against Maccabi when he posted 27 points on 13-of-17 shooting to reach an index rating of 27.
  • Nokia Arena must be one of Chris Warren's favorite gyms after a number of strong performances against Maccabi n the road. In the 2006-07 season, when he played for Cibona, Warren recorded his season-high in points (23) and his second-best index rating (23) in the game against Maccabi in Tel Aviv. In the first game between Maccabi and Cibona that season, he scored 16 points without missing a shot in less than 19 minutes. Last season he had another good showing at Nokia Arena with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Quotes Head Coaches

BIRENBOIM, EFY
Maccabi Electra
"We need to win this game, but it's also very important for us to have a good start in the relationship between the players, the team and the fans. I already coached in front of a full Nokia Arena in the preseason against Olympiacos and last week was my Euroleague debut, so I put my personal feelings towards tomorrow on the side and my main focus is the success of the team. We need to have better flow of the game than last week and play more aggressive defense in order to get our first victory."

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Electra
"The first Euroleague game in Nokia Arena is always exciting, and it's something I have been looking forward to since the first minute of preseason. After the loss in Zagreb we owe our fans a win, and I believe we'll make it happen against Avellino. I'm happy to have an important role on the team after a tough season, and ready to help the team in any given minute. We have no other choice but to win, which means we must fight and play aggressive from the first second till the last.
Lior Eliyahu - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi Electra used a 17-0 surge to open the second half en route to a 90-83 win over Air Avellino on Thursday night at Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. The win stretched Maccabi’s run to 11 straight seasons in which the club has won its Euroleague home opener. The star of the evening was Carlos Arroyo, who shined bright with 20 points and 8 assists, while Marcus Brown, who capped the big run with back-to-back three-pointers, finished with 15 points in 17 minutes and Lior Eliyahu recorded 15 points on perfect shooting. Maccabi improved to 1-1 in Group A ahead of its home clash with Le Mans next week. Avellino, which next hosts Unicaja, fell to 0-2. The hosts led for much of the game, though Avellino kept it close in the first half, keeping within 2 behind some hot shooting by Drake Diener. Unsportsmanlike fouls by Diener and Tamar Slay gave Maccabi an opportunity to pull away, but the hosts led just 45-39 at halftime. However the 17-point charge that opened the second half essentially put the game out of reach. The lead peaked at 81-54 early in the fourth quarter and Maccabi eased up at that point. Avellino though did not and Chris Warren, Travis Best and Slay led a heroic comeback. But despite cutting the gap to single digits, Avellino ran out of time and Maccabi celebrated the win. D’Or Fischer and Tal Burstein scored 11 points apiece to round out a list of all five Maccabi starters scoring in double figures. Warren led Avellino with 20 points, Marko Tusek and Diener netted 13 each and Slay and Best scored 11 apiece.

Maccabi won the opening tip, but it was Avellino that scored first on a Tusek fadeaway. Brown soon hit a runner for Maccabi’s first points. Burstein fed Eliyahu for an alley-oop that got the crowd involved, but baskets by Slay and Best kept the visitors on Maccabi’s heels. Arroyo fired in a triple and Eliyahu scored in the paint to make it 11-6. Warren stepped up with a three-pointer and soon fed Eric Williams for a basket-plus-foul – Burstein’s second – as Avellino cut the gap to 1. Fischer free throws and an Arroyo-to-Eliyahu alley-oop on the break put the hosts back on control. After a Nikola Radulovic basket, Arroyo beat best off the dribble for a three-point play. Arroyo remained on fire with a fadeaway jumper that made it 26-19 after 10 minutes.

Chris Warren - Air Avellino Diener rifled in a three-pointer to ignite the Avellino attack as the second period began. Tre Simmons countered with a jumper for Maccabi, scoring his first Euroleague points. Then he fed Eliyahu for another alley-oop slam in transition as the hosts started to cruise. Tusek scored in the paint and then after a timeout, hit a jumper to keep Avellino in the fight. Diener trimmed the gap to 30-28 from the line and after a Burstein three-point play, Diener hit another three-ball. Esteban Batista muscled his way to a basket in the paint. On the ensuing play, Diener tripped Burstein on the break and was called for an unsportsmanlike foul. Burstein made the free throws and Omri Casspi scored on the ensuing play as the read reached 8. Daniele Cinciarini got on the scoreboard with a free throw, but Slay was then called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Jason Williams, whom he stopped in the paint. However missed free throws by Maccabi followed by a Warren triple pulled Avellino within 41-37. Eric Williams brought Avellino even closer before Simmons finished the half with a three-point play as the hosts took a 45-39 lead into the locker room.

Arroyo dished to Fischer to start the second period and on the next play, Fischer was fouled on the break and made 2 free throws to give Maccabi its first double-digit advantage. A Burstein bucket was followed by an Eliyahu slam in transition and a three-point play by Fischer as the hosts pulled away for good. Back-to-back triples by Brown capped a 17-0 start to the half that made it 62-39. Warren and Radulovic finally ended the Avellino drought after more than four minutes, a long Arroyo jumper showed that Maccabi was still playing hard. Warren drained a triple, but 2 Arroyo free throws kept the lead at 20. The pace of the game slowed a bit with numerous fouls committed and players going to the line, but the hosts continued to hold a promising lead. Tusek buried a triple from the top of the key, but a Jason Williams spin move made it 73-54 heading into the fourth quarter.

Casspi’s first three-pointer of the season followed by a Jason Williams jumper killed any hopes Avellino had of staging a comeback. Brown drilled one more triple to cap a 10-0 Maccabi run that gave the hosts their biggest lead, 81-54. Diener ended the run with a three of his own. Warren ran through the Maccabi defense for a basket and Slay soon dropped in a three. Best hit free throws and Tusek and Best both bombed from downtown to get Avellino within 83-70, wrapping a 2-16 run for the guests. Arroyo free throws ended the Avellino surge, but Warren hit another three and Best cut the gap to 12. Still time was running out for the visitors and Eliyahu made it 89-75 with less than two minutes to go. Slay took no notice and fired in a three and Warren dunked off a Maccabi turnover, but it would be too little, too late as the Avellino comeback simply ran out of time.

Head Coaches

BIRENBOIM, EFY
Maccabi Electra
"The final difference was 7, because in the last quarter they came back and made a lot of isolations, put big pressure and scored many shots from long range. But that wasn't enough to put our win in danger. We had a lot of good minutes and when we play without pressure, our running game is pretty good. I'm very satisfied with the way Brown fit in. We saw his good qualities tonight."
MARKOVSKI, ZARE
Air Avellino
"Maccabi played very good with good intensity on defense, especially in the first minutes of the second half. They built a big lead. We played two good quarters, but it wasn't enough to win. We tried to give our best for 40 minutes. Maccabi had a deeper bench and big support from the fans and that made a big difference."

Players

BURSTEIN, TAL
Maccabi Electra
"We felt good and started the game very well. We managed to do well in the things we worked on. In the third quarter, we had some very good minutes and maybe because we opened the big gap we lost our focus a bit and that allowed them to get back in the game. Brown and Arroyo get a lot of attention from the defense and that helps the whole team."
SLAY, TAMAR
Air Avellino
"It was all about the third quarter. They came back from the locker room with a lot of energy and once they opened that gap we couldn't get back in the game. I knew it was like that with Maccabi already from my time in Israel with Hapoel, and I warned my new team about this, but it's Maccabi and they do that no matter who they have on the team."
