THE TAKE

Efes Pilsen seeks its first win of the season when it hosts Partizan Belgrade on Thursday evening at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey. Efes lost its season opener last week 77-70 at Lietuvos Rytas. Things did not go as well as hoped for head coach Ergin Ataman’s men, who were outrebounded 35-23, had 9 shots blocked and shot below 50% on two-pointers. With last season’s scoring king Igor Rakocevic and former scoring champ Charles Smith on the roster, there are plenty of reasons to expect a better offensive output this week. Meanwhile Partizan stumbled in the fourth quarter last week as it lost at home 64-72 to Unicaja. An excellent debut for newly-signed point guard Bo McCalebb – 15 points and 5 assists – bodes well for Partizan as he gains familiarity with his teammates, a fact that should help sut down on the 24 turnovers committed last week. The Serbian champs will also debut big man Lawrence Roberts to help in the paint this week. McCalebb will have to deal with the Efes playmaking duo of Ender Arslan and Kerem Tunceri. Partizan will turn to the likes of Dusan Kecman, Petar Bozic, Aleksandar Rasic and perhaps even some of its bigger forwards as it looks to clam down on Rakocevic, Smith, Bootsy Thornton and Preston Shumpert on the wings. The seasoned Bostjan Nachbar will take aim at Partizan forwards Jan Vesely, Branislav Dekic and Zarko Rakocevic, while at center, Partizan will rotate Aleks Maric, Slavko Vranes and Roberts against Efes’s Daniel Santiago, Kaya Peker and Mario Kasun. These teams met twice last season with the home side winning both times as several of the teams’ current players played big roles. In addition to its home-court advantage, Efes can count on its experience to help against the younger Partizan squad, however the visitors have great depth and many confident young players who could make a difference in trying tow ear down Efes’s stars like Nachbar and Rakocevic. The key for the visitors could be McCalebb and his ability to run the team and create for others down the stretch of what shapes up to be a crucial 40-minute battle for a first win.

Quotes Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"Partizan is a real good example of a great club, producing new young talents for European basketball for a long time. They do a great job under the command of experienced coach Dusko Vujosevic and that makes them a strange opponent that you can never underestimate. Despite losing Milenko Tepic and Novica Velickovic, they still have talents that are going to try to prove who they are. We got off to a terrible start last week against Rytas and this is going to be our first home game. So what we need to do is also to prove to our fans that we are a team targeting high. We need to win and I think we have enough capacity to do it."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We are not in an easy situation because we are building our new team. I know well that many are impatient, first of all our fans. But I beg for a little more patiance. We started this season struggling hard for each basket and for each win, and that is the reality for us right now."

Efes Pilsen
"This is time to forget about our bad start to the new season and to focus on the game against Partizan. We knew that they were quite young team, but we paid for our lack of motivation last week against Lietuvos Rytas away. What we need to do is to stick together and play as tough as we can. This is the only way to fly high in the Euroleague."
RAKOCEVIC, ZARKO
Partizan
"Efes Pilsen is our old rival. We played them ten times so far, and the record is 5-5. They have lot of new faces like Igor Rakocevic, Bostjan Nahbar, Daniel Santiago, just as we are still looking for self-confidence. I believe that the game in Istanbul could be a kind of cross-roads for us and the beginning of our maturation as a team."
Charles Smith - Efes PilsenEfes Pilsen registered its first win in Group B by edging Partizan 77-67 in front of 8,000 fans at Abdi Ipecki Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday night. Efes improved to 1-1 and ties for third place in this group, right behind undefeated leaders Unicaja and Lietuvos Rytas. Meanwhile, Partizan dropped to 0-2 and needs to start winning right away to get closer to the Top 16. Charles Smith led the winners with 18 points. Preston Shumpert added 17 while Igor Rakocevic had 14 for Efes. Aleks Maric led Partizan with 19 points. Bo McCalebb and Jan Vesely each added 10 for the guests. McCalebb also had a game-high 7 assists for Partizan, that led 35-37 at halftime. Smith took over with a dunk and consecutive three-pointers in a 10-0 run that put Efes ahead for good, 55-47. Partizan kept trying and Maric singlehandedly brought his team within 70-66 with under 2 minutes left. A key basket by Kaya Peker and an outstanding Rakocevic allowed Efes to seal a well-deserved win.

Efes coach Ergin Ataman opted to use both Peker and Mario Kasun in the starting lineup, looking for quick points in the paint. Kerem Tunceri got the hosts going with a corner jumper but Maric dunked it and Branislav Dekic added a three-pointer for a 2-5 Partizan edge. Efes finally got its big men involved, as Kasun followed an off-balance jumper with a second-chance layup while Peker scored down low for a 8-5 score. Maric hit an uncontested layup while free throws by McCalebb tied the game, 9-9. Kasun struggled to score once Slavko Vranes stepped on court and Efes tried to change its game plan. Peker rescued the hosts with a jump hook, as Partizan lost its scoring reference without Vesely and Dekic on court now. Maric kept pacing the guests with foul shots while Strahinja Milosevic dunked it off a steal for a 11-13 Partizan edge. Bootsy Thornton downed free throws and even when Milosevic dunked it again coming off the baseline, more foul shots by Smith tied the game again, 15-15, after 10 minutes.

Efes switched to a 2-3 zone defense early in the second quarter and tried to open the court with Shumpert, Bostjan Nachbar and Smith together on court. Shumpert stepped up with a six-meter jumper while Smith struck from downtown for a 20-16 Efes edge. Vranes scored around the basket but Ender Arslan matched it with a coast-to-coast layup. Smith provided a highlight with a fast break dunk - and the free throw that came with it. Vesely took over with a fallaway jumper off a Partizan timeout but the guests missed Maric, that sat on the bench with 3 fouls. Partizan soon entered the foul bonus and free throws by a red hot Smith made it a seven-point game, 27-20. Shumpert and Lawrence Roberts traded layups while McCalebb gave Partizan some hope at 29-24. Vesely fed Dusan Kecman for a fast break layup and nailed consecutive triples to tie the game, 32-32. Free throws by McCalebb completed the guests' comeback, 32-34, after a 3-14 run. Rakocevic and Roberts traded three-pointers to fix the halftime score at 35-37.

Aleksandar Maric - PartizanEfes tried Shumpert as power forward immediately after the break, trying to open the court as much as possible. He stepped up with consecutive three-pointers to put Efes back ahead, 41-39. Partizan used a tall lineup with Vesely at small forward but could not get Roberts and Maric involved now. Kasun hustled to score down low but a tip-in by Maric kept the guests as close as 43-42. Kasun kept pacing Efes but a three-pointer by Kecman tied it at 45-45. Roberts took over with a huge dunk but Efes reajusted its defense. Meanwhile, Smith followed a fast break slam with consecutive three-pointers in a 10-0 run that gave the hosts their biggest lead that far, 55-47. Milosevic rescued Partizan with a driving layup and McCalebb soon copied him to keep the guests in the game, 55-51. Rakocevic banked in a close jumper but McCalebb matched it with free throws for a 57-53 Partizan deficit after 30 minutes.

Vesely sank free throws early in the fourth quarter while Maric added a power layup to tie the game again, 57-57. Rakocevic scored in penetration and Shumpert added a baseline jumper to give Efes some fresh air, 61-57. Partizan called timeout, as Efes had managed to stop McCalebb with good on-the-ball defense. Thornton shined with a driving layup while Peker added an easy basket for a 65-57 Efes lead with 6 minutes left. The game had turned into a physical battle and Efes made the most out of it. A free throw by Thornton capped a 9-0 run that put the hosts ahead for good, 66-57. Maric scored again while Kecman sank a jumper to bring the guests back to life, 66-61. Tunceri fed Thornton for a fast break layup that Maric matched with a five-meter jumper. Rakocevic shined with a fast break basket but Maric stayed unstoppable and kept Partizan as close a 70-66. Peker scored down low while free throws by Rakocevic allowed all Efes fans to celebrate their team's first Euroleague win this season.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"This is a great win which is worth a lot for us. It was really very important to win at home after the disappointing loss against Lietuvos Rytas last week. We made lots of mistakes on offense in the game. We had open shots but missed those easy opportunities. But we kept fighting on defense and that was the key to stay in in the game. Our new players haven't adjusted the team yet and this is one of the problems for the lack of organization on offense. We have a lot of new guys playing together for the first time on our roster. But I believe that this win will help us to improve our game especially on offense. We hope to play better in the next games."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"First of all, I congratulate Efes Pilsen for their deserved win. I have mixed emotions about the way my team played. There were very good moments. But in the decisive moments, we didn't find the way forward. Of course, Efes Pilsen is a team that has much more talent than us. Partizan also changed the roster and we also have plenty of new players and our foreign players haven't adjusted to the team yet. So ups and downs are pretty normal at this time. I'm not satisfied, especially with the start of third quarter. We allowed easy shots in those minutes to Preston Shumpert and those were the decisive points to change the destiny of the game. I once again congratulate Efes Pilsen and their coach for their deserved win. I also want to congratulate the referees for their excellent performance."

Players

RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Efes Pilsen
"It was a very tough game. Partizan is a very young team, playing with the same system during a long time. We had wide open shots in the beginning of the game but we couldn't score. But in the beginning of the third period and especially in the last quarter, we got our rhythm on offense and scored the shots we needed to score. I think our team has enormous room to improve. We had a great roster with plenty of top quality players, and I believe we are now just playing at 50 percent of our potential performance. What we need is just a little time to improve our game."
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan
"We are a new team with new players who are mostly young. But we fought for the whole match and tried digging to win until the last minute. Except the beginning of the third period and the last five minutes of the game, I can say that we played great against a team which has many talented and experienced players. But they changed the destiny of the game in the last couple of minutes by using their experience. Nothing to do, but we lost against a great opponent. We will keep on fighting like this in the next games, too."
