THE TAKE

Unicaja hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv with a share of second place in Group B at stake on Thursday at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. Both teams come into the game tied for third place with 2-1 records, but since the group's undefeated co-leaders, Aris TT Bank and Lietuvos Rytas, also meet this week, the winner of Unicaja and Maccabi is sure to move up to second with a 3-1 record. The teams are meeting in the regular season for the second time in as many seasons. In fact Maccabi was the last Euroleague team to win in Malaga, recording a 67-73 victory last December. The Maccabi heroes from that night, Yotam Halperin (24 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Lior Eliyahu (16 points), are still with the team. But since then, Maccabi is 2-6 on the road, while Unicaja has won nine straight at home. Unicaja is coming off back-to-back wins, including a 38-point drubbing of Cibona in its lone home game this season. Davor Kus has been head coach Sergio Scariolo's top offensive weapon so far this season, with Daniel Santiago and Boniface N'Dong the big guns inside. Athletic power forward Marcus Haislip is expected back after skipping last week's game with an eye injury. Unicaja's 86.3 points per game has the team tied for third in the league this season. It is also third in rebounds, but second in turnovers committed. Meanwhile Maccabi is in good spirits after hanging on for a tough win against Efes Pilsen last week and well rested after it Israeli League game was postponed. The team is still without injured All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic, but the performance of Esteban Batista off the bench last week gives head coach Oded Kattash reasons for optimism. Maccabi will need its big guys to step up against the Unicaja trio. Batista, Eliyahu and Terence Morris all seem to match up well against their counterparts, but the question mark surrounds Marcus Fizer, who is well-known in Spain after having a strong season last year for Murcia CB. Other interesting matchups could be Berni Rodriguez against David Bluthenthal at small forward and Bojan Popovic versus Will Bynum at point guard. This game could serve as a good test for both teams to prove themselves to see if they can challenge for the top spots in the group. The game will likely be an uptempo affair, as both teams' guards like to run and score. Whichever side can do so in a controlled way while also keeping the big guys involved and effective will have a big edge.

Unicaja head coach, Sergio Scariolo
"We have a game against one of the strongest teams of the competition in terms of talent and tradition. After a good start to the competition, we have the opportunity to move oruselves into a good spot in the standings, although the obstacle in front of us is one of the highest you can find in the Euroleague. I think that beyond the fact of our persistently inconsistent play and up-and-down results, the last week we have taken an important step forward as regards our attitude on the court. I hope that our fans, who have already noticed this improvement, support our players as best they know how, especially now that they are going through a moment of low form and low confidence, so that they can help the team rise up with active and productive contributions from the most players. That will be absolutely necessary to beat such a tough rival as Maccabi."

Unicaja center, German Gabriel
"I believe this game against Maccabi is very important because it will help us as much in the Euroleague itself as it will our team morale. I think our last Spanish League game showed that we have character, a will to fight and win, but we were unable to take the victory. Now, we have to keep working day to day in order to improve. What's important now is to get a win in order to take a positive step forward."

Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv head coach, Oded Kattash
"Unicaja is a very good home team, despite the results they have had in the Spanish League so far. They played great against Cibona last week and also in the game against Armani Jeans Milano that I saw. It's a very tough road game, but almost any road game in our group is a tough one. I think we have a good match up against them. They have very quick guards, but if we know how to control the tempo of the game, they'll have fewer options. They also have two very good big men, so we'll try to make them work hard on defense and use their lack of quickness."

Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv guard, Will Bynum
"It's going to be a war. There are no more easy games in the Euroleague. The level is high, and there's no one team better than the rest. So we'll try to go out there and do the little things that give wins. That's it. I hope that by the end of the year we'll play well and be healthy. We have good memories from Malaga. Last year we took a big road win there. Hopefully we'll do it again."

Marcus Haislip - Unicaja Unicaja held off Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv for a 93-70 victory on Thursday night at the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. Carlos Cabezas led the way with 21 points and German Gabriel added 16 off the bench as Unicaja won its 10th consecutive Euroleague home game. The last team to beat Unicaja in Malaga was Maccabi last January. The win also sees Unicaja improve to 3-1 and join Aris TT Bank in second place in Group B. Maccabi dropped to 2-2 and is tied for fourth in the group with Efes Pilsen. Maccabi jumped out to an early 2-9 lead, but Unicaja used 9 straight points to get right back. The hosts remained in control from that point, leading 45-36 at halftime as Maccabi never mounted a serious run. However the game was relatively close heading into the fourth quarter, when Maccabi was only down 7. But Unicaja remained red-hot in the fourth quarter and outscored Maccabi by 15 down the stretch to coast to victory. The hosts made 10 three-pointers to Maccabi's 2 and committed just 6 turnovers, while Maccabi had 15. Marcus Haislip dominated early and finished with 19 points, Boniface N'Dong had 14 points and 8 rebounds, Jiri Welsch added 11 points and Berni Rodriguez 10. Marcus Fizer led Maccabi with 15 points and Will Bynum added 14.

Maccabi won the opening tip and went to work inside through Fizer. Vonteego Cummings made it 0-4 before Cabezas got Unicaja on the board. David Bluthenthal converted a three-point play and a Fizer steal led to a Yotam Halperin fast break layup as Maccabi surged to 2-9. However Unicaja quickly regained its focus. Haislip started to get his team going, Cabezas added a triple and then Haislip's bank shot tied the game at 9-9. After a scoreless minute, Haislip dunked for Unicaja's first lead, however Bluthenthal bettered him with a triple. Cabezas continued to push the hosts forward and Carlos Jimenez fed Haislip for another slam as Unicaja went up 3. Esteban Batista's first points were matched by Haislip's 10th and then N'Dong made it 19-14. Haislip scored in Terence Morris's face, but Bynum penetrated for a basket to make it 21-16 at the end of the first period.

Yotam Halperin - Maccabi EliteBatista fought his way inside for a basket, but Gabriel and Welsch hit from outside and then German went inside with a hook to increase the hosts' lead to 10. Bynum tried to fuel Maccabi and got the visitors within 6, however Gabriel took over, drilling a pair of triples. Haislip came of the bench with another three to complete a 10-2 run for a 38-24 Unicaja lead. Fizer fought back with a pair of baskets inside and after a Gabriel layup, Derrick Sharp hit from close range and Cummings went coast-to-coast for a layup-plus foul to cut the deficit to 6. Unicaja used a timeout to prepare for the last play of the half and it paid off as Cabezas penetrated for a score to make it 45-36 at halftime.

Alex Garcia and then Fizer started chipping into the Unicaja lead as the second half got underway, but a Daniel Santiago and Cabezas led a 10-0 run that gave put Unicaja up 58-42. An Omri Casspi basket off an offensive rebound and a Cummings penetration helped Maccabi remain in the picture. Free throws by Rodriguez and N'Dong kept Unicaja comfortably ahead. Still Maccabi persisted and reeled off 7 straight points from Batista, Morris and Bynum, plus a defensive stand at the end of the period helped the Israeli champs cut the gap to 65-57 heading into the fourth quarter.

Berni Rodriguez - UnicajaGabriel used a mismatch on Cummings to score for Unicaja early in the fourth quarter, but Halperin matched for Maccabi. Rodriguez and Welsch drilled big threes to restore a double-digit lead and after Casspi was called for a questionable foul, Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash earned a technical foul, which after a Rodriguez free throw and a Gabriel jumper resulted in a 76-61 scoreline. Casspi continue to fight and came right back with a triple, but his confidence seemed to grow too quickly and he traveled on Maccabi's next attack. Haislip fed N'Dong for a two-handed slam as the visitors' chances started to slip away. Cabezas added another nail in the Maccabi coffin with a three and soon added another to increase the lead to 19. Haislip piled it on from the line and N'Dong hit a bank shot as the lead peaked at 91-68 with a minute remaining, allowing the home fans to celebrate another home win.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We had a very solid game tonight, we were really focused and intense. We managed to protect our basket and all the easy layups we followed were due to little distractions, but never because of big mistakes or lack of intensity. This is a very important win, especially for our fans who are most important for us. They came to the arena willing to support us and that always help those players who need that help the most."
KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"First of all, I want to congratulate Unicaja for its good game, they got a well-deserved win because they managed to bounce back from a slow start to control the game. Their defense did not allow us to play our game. We have many new players, also many youngsters and we missed some veterans tonight. We changed our defense in the second half but Unicaja kept controlling the game and hit all its shots."

Players

WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"This is a very important win for us, because we needed it badly. We played with a lot of character and intensity tonight. We now hope to do the same in the Spanish League, were we have been up-and-down lately."
CASSPI, OMRI
Maccabi Elite
"We played poorly. We cannot allow ourselves to give up so many points in an away game. We had some good moments in the third quarter. Things don't feel good, but we have to hold our heads high and look ahead."
