THE TAKE

Efes Pilsen welcomes back a familiar face when Olympiacos Piraeus visits for a Group A clash in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday. Olympiacos swingman Henry Domercant spent the previous two seasons with Efes, winning the 2005 Turkish League title while there. Now he's a major part of the undefeated start by Olympiacos (4-0) that Efes (2-2) plans to end on Wednesday. This game pits the league's top scoring attack of Olympiacos against the No. 1 team defense of Efes. In fact, Olympiacos is leading the league in both scoring (93.7 ppg.) and rebounding (42.2 rpg.). Last week it survived a tough test at Le Mans, holding on for an 81-88 win as Alex Acker put up another big-time performance. Acker is third in the league in scoring (17.7 ppg.) and rebounds (8.7 rpg.) and among the top 10 players in steals (2.5 spg). He, playmaker Scoonie Penn (13.7 ppg., 4.2 apg.) and big man Andrija Zizic (16 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) have made the Reds a fun team to watch. Meanwhile Efes Pilsen (2-2) started the season in promising form, but has since dropped two straight games. Efes lost by 3 points last week at Tau Ceramica despite a season-best 18 points from last year's league-leading scorer, Drew Nicholas. Efes is scoring only 67.7 points per game, but holding its opponents to a league-low 66.7. Efes's 12 turnovers per game are second-fewest in the league. The team will need a combination of speed, athleticism and power to keep Olympiacos from running away with the game. Power forward Marcus Haislip (9.2 ppg., 5.7 rpg., 2 bpg.), Ermal Kuqo and Kerem Gonlum will be charged with stopping Zizic and Sofoklis Schortsantis inside. At forward, teenage sensation Cenk Akyol (12 ppg.) will matchup with Acker in a telling encounter. However, the key to this game could well be which playmaker can best control the pace. Efes continues to play without former starter Horace Jenkins. If Penn and Olympiacos are getting points in transition, it could be a long night for the hosts in Istanbul. On the other hand, if Cuneyt Erden and Co. rise to the occasion, especially on defense, Efes could snap its losing streak while handing Olympiacos its first loss.

Quotes Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"The names in the roster and the results that they have through four games so far show that Olympiacos is a very dangerous team. They have top-quality players and are really very strong. We are going to play our second game at home. We will try to win with all our might by trying to play our own regular style."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"There is no doubt that for us this is the most difficult game in the Euroleague so far, for many reasons. We are facing a very good team on the road, a team that is coming from two consecutive defeats and they will have extra motivation to return to winning. Including the Greek League, this is our third straight road game, so our players are definitely a little bit tired. But that means nothing. Our goal is to win this game and we are determined to give our best in the court. Efes Pilsen is a complete team with many good players at all positions and the thing they miss so far is the right chemistry."

"We will have the hardest game of the season until now against Olympiacos. The atmosphere of the games with Greek opponents are always different than in other games. We always feel like we are playing a derby game whenever we meet with a Greek team. As one of the playmakers of Efes Pilsen, I feel more responsibility than ever. Like in most of the other Euroleague games, defense will be the key factor in this one, too. Olympiacos is a great team with plenty of talented players. But we will show that we are better than them by stopping their unbeaten streak."
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"All games are special. Efes Pilsen is one more opponent we have to beat in order to make our goal. It is a very important game, because if we win, we make a great step in our group and that is the reason that keeps us focused. I like Istanbul. It was a nice experience for me. Now that I am coming back, I will try hard to help my team Olympiacos accomplish its goal. And that goal is to get our third road win. If we want to succeed, we need to establish our rhythm and play with our style. If we play together as a team, I strongly believe that everything is going to be fine."
Andrew Nicholas - Efes Pilsen Efes Pilsen put on a three-point shooting clinic in a record-setting fourth quarter to storm back from an early double-digit deficit and hand Olympiacos its first loss of the season, 95-77 on Wednesday at the Abdi Ipekci arena in Istanbul. The home team buried 8 straight triples and 11 overall as it scored 39 points - a Euroleague record for points in a fourth quarter - to secure the win. In the whole game, Efes hit 17 of 30 three-point attempts. The result saw Efes snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 3-2 in Group A, while Olympiacos fell to 4-1. Drew Nicholas led the Efes charge, making 5-of-6 threes on the way to 20 points and 6 assists. Cuneyt Erden added 15 points, the same as Ermal Kuqo and Marcus Haislip, who also had 7 rebounds.Horace Jenkins returned to the lineup after a two-week absence for 12 points. Alex Acker led Olympiacos with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Andrija Zizic added 18 and 7 and former Efes Pilsen player Henry Domercant had 14. Scoonie Penn finished with 10 points and 4 assists for the Reds, who had led by as many as 16 points in the first half.

Although Efes took early leads as Haislip started the scoring and Akyol hit is first triple, Olympiacos soon had success with pick-and-rolls. Zizic scored three times in succession for the visitors first lead, 5-6. Domercant unloaded a triple and Acker a jumper to make it 5-11 before Zizic added his fourth basket in barely 4 minutes. Efes tried to stay in the game with three-pointers, of which Nicholas hit a pair, but Acker and Zizic were not being stopped. Zizic's fifth layup supplied the Reds with a 12-21 lead before Nicholas's second triple and late free throws by Kerem Gonlum left an 18-25 score after 10 minutes.

Henry Domercant - OlympiacosDomercant pumped in another triple to open the second quarter with Olympiacos enjoying a double-digit lead, 18-28. Efes countered with inside points from Gonlum and Ermal Kuqo but the quick passing game of the Reds kept the hosts from catching up, as did another triple, by Panagiotis Vassilopoulos. Horace Jenkins, who had missed the previous two games, made a surprise entrance for Efes, but Olympiacos kept rolling as Domercant canned his third shot from the arc to make it a 15-point game, 29-44. But whatever Efes did, Olympiacos seemed to stay ahead as Zizic made free throws and Acker another jumper to make it 32-48, the highest lead yet for the visitors. Nicholas with a triple and Prkacin with a layup helped save the hosts with the last 5 points before halftime, but Olympiacos still led 37-48.

The hosts raised their level of defensive intensity in the third quarter, causing Olympiacos to struggle to score. Efes used pressure to try and catch its opponent. Haislip made a three-pointer and added a single free throw on the next possession to cut the difference to 47-53 midway through the period. Olympiacos players made some wrong decisions with the ball, allowing the hosts to keep chipping away. Kuqo's layup over Sofoklis Schortsanidis made the score 53-58. Penn made a layup with 18 seconds left in the period, giving Olympiacos 12 for the period, but Erden's triple finished the third quarter with Efes within 56-60.

Just 15 seconds into the last period, Erden hit another three-pointer to reduce the difference to a single point. A minute later Kuqo drilled a three to level the game at 62-62. Efes took its first lead on a Jenkins three and with the momentum with the home team, funny things started to happen. Kuqo attempted an alley-oop pass to Haislip, but the ball dropped into the basket without touching him for 3 points that made the score 69–64. Then Jenkins, Erden, Haislip and Jenkins again shocked Olympiacos from beyond the arc to extend the lead to 82–70 with five minutes remaining. The visitors were committing turnovers and missing open shots, helping Efes cement its control. Erden hit 2 more three-pointers and Nicholas added another for the 11th three-pointer of the quarter to seal the win. Olympiacos, which had trouble on both ends of the floor in the final period, could only watch quietly as Nicholas sealed the scoring from the line to give Efes the 95–77 victory.

Head Coaches

MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"We had a very bad defensive first half. We weren't able to do what we planned in those two quarters. But starting in the third quarter, we played perfect defense. We stopped them and then with the energy of our defense, we had a respectable percentage on shooting. We made crucial three pointers in the last quarter especially. What makes me happy is that we found our team spirit. The 11 three-pointers in the last quarter is the part of the game. There's nothing much to say about it."
GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"We knew that it's going to be a tough game. I prefer to lose a game by 18-points, instead of losing 18 games by 1 point. What you have seen in the second half, I don't believe that you will see it again in the Euroleague. This happens once in a lifetime and it happened to us. Of course I have complaints about the game. They scored 11 of 12 three-pointers in the last quarter. This is more than a game. For sure, the main players were a little bit fatigued in the second half. But this is not the reason [we lost]. Efes scored at an unbelievable percent and nobody could stop them tonight."

Players

JENKINS, HORACE
Efes Pilsen
c"We had an extraordinary last quarter, in which we made unbelievable shots. We were on fire and we had excellent shooting from the three-point line. It's also good for me to return with a win. Now we have to focus on our next game against Climamio Bologna."
KUQO, ERMAL
Efes Pilsen
"It was a very important game for us. We are still struggling to find our way. I hope this game is going to be the starting point for our rise. We are really happy to beat them after coming back from a 16-point deficit, because Olympiacos is one of the best teams in the Euroleague this season. If we play defense the way we did in the third quarter, we can beat any team."
DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"It was a tough game. Everyone knows that Efes Pilsen is a hard team to beat at home. In the fourth quarter, they started to fire unbelievable shots, which helped them to win the game. It's really very tough to beat a team when they play like this offensively. I congratulate them for their performance. We will try to beat them next time at home."
