THE TAKE

Khimki Moscow hopes to finally win some hardware and starts its Eurocup Group C campaign at home against STB Le Havre. Head coach Kestutis Kemzura is back for his second full season with the Khimki club, which twice finished runner-up in the Russian league (2006 and 2008), has been bounced from the ULEB Cup in the Final 16 the past two seasons and lost to Joventut in the final of the 2006 FIBA EuroCup. But Kemzura has a team loaded with enough talent that it could challenge for the title this season. It is a very deep Khimki team, which has started very strong in the Russian Superleague. Center Maciej Lampe has led the team in scoring with about 16 points while grabbing some 6 rebounds. Forward Kelly McCarty has been his usual all-around self with about 11 points, 4 rebounds and almost 2 steals. While those are the only two players to average in double figures, Kemzura relies on a rotation which sees seven players averaging at least 20 minutes. Forward Jorge Garbajosa and guard Carlos Delfino have both been excellent additions from the NBA and both know how to take over the game at times or just do whatever their team needs to win. Forward Mike Wilkinson is slowly getting back into the mix; guard Vitaly Fridzon is a real long range threat; and guard Anton Ponkrashov has turned into an excellent all-around performer. Khimki is clearly the heavy favorite going into its home encounter. Le Havre comes into the game after serious struggles in the French league where it sits on a relegation spot. Head coach Jean Manuel Sousa's team knocked off Oostende in the second qualifying round to reach the regular season. Leading the way for Sousa in the qualifiers was guard TJ Thompson who averaged 19 points, 5 assists and 2.5 steals. And forward Bingo Merriex added 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2.5 assists. But that duo has gotten little help this season though forward Aleksandar Bojic had 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds against Oostende. Sousa only had eight players total play in the two games. But the coach made two big additions just before the regular season tipped off by bringing in talented forward Marcus Slaughter and veteran forward Danny Strong. The additions of Slaughter and strong will give Sousa some help but it will take a heroic performance from the whole team to knock off Khimki.

Head Coaches

KEMZURA, KESTUTIS
BC Khimki
"We are respectful to all opponents, but Le Havre is not a very strong team. This match was difficult for us psychologically. We started not well, we were constrained. But concentration in defense helped us to find self-reliance. The second period became decisive. After that we only increased the lead. And I had the possibility to give playing time to all my players."
SOUSA, JEAN MANUEL
STB Le Havre
"We congratulate BC Khimki for the victory. We started the match well, we led by some points, but the level of our opponent is very high. When we had problems with triples, we decided to change the tactics. But Khimki won deservedly."
