THE TAKE

Two teams with momentum going in opposite directions will clash in a battle that has big Top 16 implications when Efes Pilsen hosts Armani Jeans Milano on Wednesday in Istanbul, Turkey. Efes started the season with two wins, but has dropped four in a row since it beat Armani Jeans 71-81 in Italy in Week 2. Meanwhile Milano started the season 0-4, but has now won back-to-back thrillers – including a nail-biter against the champs last week. Both teams enter this contest with 2-4 record and on the outside looking in on the fight for a spot in the next stage. The winner of this game will climb right back to the battle, while the loser will fall to last place. Efes had little trouble with Milano the first time around as three players hit at least 3 triples and Milos Vujanic scored 19 points. But Milano has more confidence now than before as well as a deeper lineup with all its top players healthy. On the other hand, Efes has a different look as Cliff Hammonds and Predrag Drobnjak joined the team last week and made their debuts in the loss at Partizan. Both teams enter this game with deep lineups and rotations that will shift on any given night based on who’s hot. Milano’s top players have been guards David Hawkins and Jobey Thomas plus forward Mike Hall, but Luca Vitali carried the team for chunks of time last week against CSKA. And big man Pape Sow adds some serious strength in the paint, while veterans Massimo Bulleri, Marco Mordente and Mason Rocca balance head coach Piero Bucchi’s men. Meanwhile, Efes leans heavily on the perimeter trio of Charles Smith, Bootsy Thornton and Vujanic. Hammonds and Ender Arslan add depth in the backcourt, while Kerem Gonlum, Kaya Peker and Michailis Kakiouzis lead the frontcourt. Former Milano forward Preston Shumpert could also play a big role with his shooting skills. This game has the look of a contest that will be decided by the guards, which makes the defensive abilities of players like Hawkins or Hammonds as important as their teammates’ scoring skills. The head-to-head matchup between Hawkins and Smith could be the most important, as the winner will give his teammates some momentum that could prove the difference. If the game goes to the wire, Milano and it’s league-leading free-throw shooting is as dangerous as it gets.

GAME QUOTES

Efes Pilsen
  • Efes Pilsen defeated Armani Jeans Milano in the finals of the 1996 Korac Cup. Efes won the first leg at home by 8 and lost the second in Italy by only 7 to list the cup. Efes has won all five meetings with Milano since then.
  • Guard Milos Vujanic needs just 2 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Bootsy Thornton is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague career. Thornton enters his team’s Week 7 game with 976 points in 91 career games.
  • Forward Michailis Kakiouzis needs only 9 more defensive rebounds to reach 500 for his career – a feat only seven players to date have accomplished.
  • Big man Kaya Peker needs just 2 more rebounds to move into the top 20 on the Euroleague Basketball all-time rebounding charts. Peker enters his team’s Week 7 game with 538 career rebounds.
  • Big man Kerem Gonlum needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Preston Shumpert played his first Euroleague season with his Week 2 opponent, Armani Jeans Milano, in the 2005-06 season. Guard Massimo Bulleri is the only player still with the club from that season. Shumpert played for Benetton Treviso the following season, where he was a teammate of current Milano guard Marco Mordente.
Armani Jeans Milano
  • Guard David Hawkins needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Forward Mike Hall shot 0 for 7 from downtown in his first two Euroleague games, but is 9 for 17 since (52.9%).
  • Armani Jeans remains on record-setting free throw shooting pace as a team. Through six games, the club has made 71 of 81 free throws for an incredible 87.7%. Mike Hall and David Hawkins lead the effort going a combined 36 for 37 thus far. No team has ever shot above 83% from the line in a Euroleague Basketball season.
  • Guard Luca Vitali was a teammate of Efes Pilsen big man Michailis Kakiouzis during the 2003-04 season with Montepaschi Siena. They both played at the Final Four that season in Tel Aviv.
  • Vitali scored 17 points last week in his seventh career Euroleague appearance. He totaled 16 points in his first six games combined.

Quotes Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"Despite coming closer to the middle of the season, we are still struggling with the difficulties of being a new team. We lost two important games at home, which was not in our plans as an option. Now we have a very different situation in the group, as we need more than winning a couple of those games. The point-difference is also as important as winning. As one of the traditional clubs of the Euroleague, we knew that we can find the way out of this chaotic environment. We have the power to beat any one in the group, but the problem is that we couldn’t prove what we are until now. We just need a spark for the fire. I trust my players that they are ready to do it. Armani Jeans Milano is playing much better than when we played in Milano at the beginning of the season. They beat CSKA Moscow and that’s enough to understand how dangerous they are at the moment. We don’t want to make another mistake and I believe in my players that they will do everything they can to win."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"The next four games in Euroleague are four finals for us. We know it and we're gonna play with this spirit starting from Istanbul. We are improving step by step, but we know which are our goals and what we have to do: If our opponents will do a better job, we'll congratulate them. It will be a tough game in front of a hot crowd. They lost four games in a row in Euroleague and they want to stop it to not compromise their run to the Top 16. The have talent and they will be dangerous for sure."

"We are passing through a very hard period in the Euroleague. We know that we upset our fans in the previous matches and spent the credit we had in our hands. But we also know that we still have something to show and pay back. We have the talent and experience to overcome the troubles. What we need is to have the support of our fans back behind us and to put our hearts beside our skills. Armani Jeans Milano is playing much better basketball than the beginning of the season. But we will not make the same mistakes we did at home before."
SOW, PAPE
AJ Milano
"Every game is important, and this one versus Efes Pilsen as well. We have to play with the same spirit that we had in the last games. We are improving, we are getting to know each other better and the results confirm that. We go to Istanbul with confidence to play against a good team, and we know what to do to win this game."
Milos Vujanic - Efes PilsenEfes Pilsen revived its Top 16 hopes Wednesday with a hard-fought 74-67 win over Armani Jeans Milano in Istanbul, Turkey. Kaya Peker and Milos Vujanic rose to the occasion with big games and crucial baskets in the fourth quarter as Efes snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-4, which tied it for third place in Group D. The club also beat Milano for the second time, giving it the important head-to-head tiebreaker, should it arise later on. Meanwhile Milano, which won its last two games, fell to 2-5 and now sits in last place in the group. The hosts started red hot as Peker and Bootsy Thornton pushed Efes to a 12-point lead, but Marco Mordente’s shooting carried Milano back and later Massimo Bulleri’s heroics kept the visitors within 39-37 at halftime. Massimo Bulleri and Mike Hall teamed on 0-8 third-quarter run as Milano took the lead for the first time and the game would stay close, entering the fourth quarter tied 54-54. But Efes wrested away the lead at the start of the fourth behind triples from Michailis Kakiouzis and Vujanic and held on for the important win. Vujanic led Efes with 20 points and 4 assists, while Peker posted 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Charles Smith added 12 points and 4 assists and Thonrton netted 10. Bulleri paced Milano with 14 points and 5 assists and Mason Rocca added 11 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

Peker muscled his way to the basket and drew a foul to score the game’s first points and then went inside again for a basket-plus-foul as the hosts went ahead early. Rocca scored Milano’s first points from the line, but Kerem Gonlum and Peker gave Efes a 9-1 start, causing Milano head coach Piero Bucchi to take a timeout after less than three minutes of action. The visitors settled down as Rocca corrected his own miss and then Yohann Sangare stripped Preston Shumpert and darted in for a layup. Thornton went into the lane for a score, however Mike Hall’s triple cut the gap to 11-9 as Milano recovered from a poor start. But the visitors remained a basket behind and when Vujanic fired in a triple and Peker finished came up with a three-point play in transition, Efes led 21-13 and Peker had 10 points. Mordente answered from downtown for Milano, but Thornton matched him and then scored on the break to give Efes a double-digit advantage before Mordente’s second three made it 28-19 after 10 minutes.

Richard Mason Rocca - AJ MilanoThe entrance of Pape Sow and Mindaugas Katelynas energized the Milano troops and created space for the shooters. Luca Vitali and Mordente capitalized, sandwiching triples around a Sow slam to bring Milano within 1. Efes head coach Ergin Ataman used a timeout after which Vujanic scored from close and far and Smith cut for a hoop to make it 35-27 midway through the period. Milano’s shooting kept it alive, but Efes’s aggressive defense shut down the passing lanes and limited the visitors’ options. Bulleri flew past Sinan Guler for a three-point play and then hit a three from the top of the key to make it a 2-point game. And Kakiouzis and Jobey Thomas traded baskets to make it 39-37 at halftime.

Peker started the second half with a dunk for his first points since the opening period. However Hall hit a jumper on the other end and when Bulleri teamed with Rocca to strip Vujanic and then few him for a layup, the score was tied at 41-41. Hall added a jumper for Milano’s first lead of the game and Bulleri scored from the line to cap a 0-8 run and make it 41-45. Vujanic scored on the break to revive the hosts as the game tightened up. Rocca knocked Peker in the face while battling for a rebound and took a seat with 4 fouls. A Sow slam put the visitors up 5, however Vujanic kept it close with a triple – his third of the night. Sow picked up an unsportsmanlike foul for tripping Peker and then a technical for arguing. The result was 4 free throws made – 2 by Peker and 2 by Vujanic – as Efes took a 51-50 advantage. And then Smith score a basket-plus-foul before Bulleri’s mid-range jumper restored Milano’s spirits. And a Katelynas jumper knotted the score at 54-54 heading into the decisive fourth quarter.

Kakiouzis fired in a triple from the corner and after a Katelynas basket, Vujanic hit from downtown to make it 60-56. Cliff Hammonds extended the lead and a Smith tip-in made it 64-56. Hammonds also shined on the defensive end with a big block on Hall. David Hawkins stepped up with a block on one end and a slam on the other to bring the visitors within 4, but Milano lost an important piece as Rocca fouled out on the ensuing play. However the Milano defense stood the test, the visitors came up short at the other end. Peker made it 66-60 with a basket from close-range with two-and-a-half minutes to go. Thomas gave Milano hope with a triple, but Smith matched him to keep the hosts up 6 with 1:21 to play. Katelynas missed from downtown and Peker muscled his way to a basket as Efes put the finishing touches on an important and hard-fought win.

"It was a very critical win for us. We had real good defensive game against Armani Jeans Milano, which was the key for our win. We had a real good first quarter, in which we managed to do what we had planned. But in the second quarter the things changed because we lost the mood in the game. Our players coming from the bench didn’t perform well as we lost the momentum in the game. Milano ruled the game until the last quarter. But we did the things well in defense. I have to credit especially Kaya Peker for his excellent performance inside the paint. Also Cliff Hammonds played real good job in the playmaker position. Now we have another critical game against Panionios On Telecoms, which we need to win."
BUCCHI, PIERO
AJ Milano
"I can say that we had a bad start in defense. But we balanced the game immediately after that in the coming minutes. But Efes Pilsen played the end of the game much better than us. The thing is that they made better choices at the end to win the game."

"We won a game that we needed to win very much. The first thing is to be happy. The second thing is that we played really good in defense and proved that we improved a lot for it. We knew that the things would not be easy because Armani Jeans Milano is playing much better than before. But we motivated well and never thought about losing. We had ups and downs in the game, but the most important things was to win the game. This is the first step we made for the second stage. Now we have the second one against Panionios on Telecoms next week."
