THE TAKE

History will be made in Group D on Wednesday, as EWE Baskets Oldenburg welcomes Armani Jeans Milano in its first-ever Euroleague home game. Oldenburg already proved its value by edging Asseco Prokom Gdynia 81-87 on the road last week behind 23 points from Rickey Paulding, who also buried the game-winning three-pointer in the final minute. Meanwhile, Armani Jeans registered a 67-75 home loss against defending champion Panathinaikos and must bounce back right away in an already important game to reach the Top 16. After missing an Italian League game over the weekend, Mike Hall is expected back in the Milano lineup and may be the type of player needed to slow down Paulding. Meanwhile EWE learned that starting point guard Jason Gardner may miss the next month, leaving more responsibility to be shouldered by Je’Kel Foster, who had 20 points and 6 assists in Poland. Josh Carter joins Paulding as Oldenburg’s other main reference at the wings, while the sharp-shooting Foster now runs the show. Milano is quite deep at point guard with Morris Finley and Massimo Bulleri ready to stop Foster. The key matchup, however, seems to feature Paulding against either young veteran Jonas Maciulis or Mike Hall at small forward. Carter, meanwhile, could engage in a physical battle against Alex Acker. Milano’s Mason Rocca and Marius Petravicius are expected to see most minutes inside while Stefano Mancinelli could get some playing time at power forward. Petravicius is ready to test his offensive skills against defensive center Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje. Mancinelli has a key matchup against Milan Majstorovic, while Oldenburg counts on Marko Scekic and Jasmin Perkovic to offer strength, rebounding skills and defense. Oldenburg must get Rocca and Petravicius into foul trouble and make its threes to increase its chances of staying unbeaten in the competition. Milano must keep its big men out of foul trouble and get Finley and Maciulis involved to steal a road win from Oldenburg. Meanwhile, EWE Baskets must attack the basket, play physical and get one-on-one opportunities for Carter and Paulding. There should be plenty of excitement in this pivotal early season game this Wednesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

KRUNIC, PREDRAG
EWE Baskets
“After our impressive start in Poland, we focus on our next competition against Milano. To be honest: I was quite surprised in how we played in Gdynia. I guess it was one of the bigger surprises in Week 1 of the Euroleague. Now we are facing a very strong team that comes from a very strong league. Italy is one of the best leagues throughout the continent. They have a lot of players with Euroleague experience. Players like Alex Acker and Morris Finley are excellent guards. Milano has quality players for other positions too.”
BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"Oldenburg is a very good team, talented and physically very strong. We’ll have to play a good game especially in defense, trying to bring home a win that’d be particularly important for us after losing at home last week. We have to play with the same consistency we had on Sunday in the Italian League. We have to play tough and be mentally well concentrated. They are good, as I said before, as they showed last week winning in Sopot against Prokom. They are the German champions, and they are more or less the same team who won a good league, like the German one is, last year."

Players

BOUMTJE BOUMTJE, RUBEN
EWE Baskets
"It is a great experience for us to play against some of the best players from all over Europe. During practice we do anything we can to climb onto the next step. The Euroleague games are something like a bonus for all of us. We gain a lot of self-confidence out of these games. Now we concentrate on our work on the game against Milano and look forward to this debut on our home court. The major difference between national and international games is the way the game is being played: In the Euroleague the games are much more physical - and the referees do not make that many calls."
PETRAVICIUS, MARIUS
Armani Jeans Milano
“I played in Germany and I know that league very well. It’s a strong league with many good teams, especially now that’s open for American guys. Oldenburg is the German champion. They are a very good team, with good talent as they showed last week winning their first game in Poland against Prokom. We have to be well prepared for a tough game, we have to be 100% ready, set our mind that it’ll be a tough game. It’s a very important game for us especially after losing at home last Thursday against Panathinaikos.”
Mike Hall - AJ MilanoThe first-ever Euroleague game in Oldenburg, Germany ended up a disappointment for the home fans but a major boost for the visitors as Armani Jeans Milano rallied to defeat EWE Baskets 70-79 in Group D. Milano's first victory in Group D came after a fourth-quarter blast that featured a flurry of 5 three-pointers in as many minutes and 10 points in the final 4 by Mason Rocca. Both teams are now 1-1 and will share a spot in the middle of the Group D table. In what was a back-and-forth scoreboard most of the way, Oldenburg led 59-54 early in the final quarter, before Jonas Maciulis, Morris Finley and Marco Mordente unleashed a trio of three-pointers that put the visitors in front the rest of the way. Maciulis led the winners with 18 points, while Rocca had 16, most of those sustaining the lead down the stretch. Mordente and Michael Hall added 11 points each. Milano also ruled the backboards, out-rebounding Oldenburg 23-37 overall and 7 to 14 on the offensive glass. For the hosts, Je'Kel Foster poured in 20 points, while Jasmin Perkovic followed with 16, Rickey Paulding 12 and Marko Scekic 10.

The sellout crowd of more than 5,000 Oldenburg fans seeing their first-ever Euroleague team saw their team fall behind as Mariusz Petravicius, Stefano Mancinelli and Maciulis scored quickly for a 2-6 Milano lead. The hosts didn't take long to fix their defense. Meanwhile, Foster and Perkovic combined on 6 consecutive points to claim Oldenburg's first lead, 8-6. Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje rolled to the basked for a hook at 10-6, but Petravicius found Acker out of the double team for a two-hand slam. After a timeout, Oldenburg began finding break opportunities, with Perkovic downing one and Paulding finishing a steal at 14-9. The Oldenburg defense proved tough for Milano to break through Rocca got to the free throw line, but Foster matched him to sustain the hosts lead at 16-11 after 10 minutes.

JeKel Foster - EWE BasketsMilano got its first easy shot in a while to start the second quarter, and Maciulis draiined it from long range. But the visitors' defense also let Marko Scekic loose for an easy layup to keep Oldenburg in charge at 19-14. Mike Hall dropped a mid-range jumper and Maciulis got to the line to hit 2 free throws as Milano inched to within a single point, at 19-18. Scekic stopped Oldenburg's slide with a layup, and then Carter got the home fans out of their seats with a big triple from the wing at 24-18. Milano needed a timeout, after which Finley canned his first basket while Hall chased an offensive rebound to the corner and drained a triple from there to make it 24-23. Oldenburg needed the next timeout, after which Foster and Marco Mordente buried dueling triples. Another offensive rebound by Milano let Hall tied it 18-18. Perkovic and Maciulis exchanged inside baskets before Finley broke another tie at 33-34. Foster waltzed for a layup to take it back for Oldenburg, whose defense held strong in the final minute for a 35-34 halftime advantage.

Paulding stayed a step ahead as Paulding opened up the second half with another layup. Acker answered quickly for Milan, whose next possession featured 3 offensive rebounds until Mancinelli scored alone for a new visitors' lead, 37-38. Paulding and Mancinelli traded points and leads again before Foster broke through for a basket and a 41-40 home lead. A parade of free throws ensued after which Foster again broke a tie with a layup and Paulding copied him to put Oldenburg up 47-43. Milano got its first basket in minutes by Mason Rocca, and Maciulis followed him to a 47-47 tie. . Again, Oldenburg spurted ahead, on 4 free throws by Perkovic, but Rocca got half of them back to leave a 51-49 scoreboard after 30 minutes.

The scoring suddenly picked up to start the final quarter as Scekic fired Oldenburg ahead from downtown by 54-49. Mordente was able to help Milan keep pace with 5 points in a row, including his own shot from long range, at 56-54. Scekic returned to the arc and buried a big shot, but he was now giving Milan ideas. Boom, boom, boom over the next minute-and-a-half, first Maciulis, then Morris and then Mordente again unloaded from the three-point arc as Milano suddenly seized a 59-63 lead and quieted the home crowd. Even when Carter got the hosts back within 62-63, Milano was not done as Hall joined the three-point party at 62-66. Oldenburg had its own answer from deep, Paulding, but Maciulis went inside to keep the visitors a step ahead, 65-68, with under 4 minutes left. After an Oldenburg timeout, Rocca got loose underneath to lengthen Milano's advantage, and then got yet another rebound, was fouled and hit free throws to make it 65-72. And he was not done. Rocca got free again not once, but twice, the second time on a nice feed by Finley, for his own personal 0-8 run that put the game out of reach and Milano in the win column in Group D.

Head Coaches

KRUNIC, PREDRAG
EWE Baskets
"I think we had a chance to win this game tonight. My team played hard and defended well for large parts of the game. But Armani Jeans Milano has a very strong team and in the last quarter, we made some mistakes that led to fairly easy baskets for Milano. Milano defended very well and we did not shoot the ball well enough, especially from beyond the three-point line. But I liked the atmosphere in the arena and the way we played tonight. Next time, we'll have to make our shots from the perimeter and then our chances of winning games in this very tough league will be even better."
BUCCHI, PIERO
Armani Jeans Milano
"First of all I want to congratulate Coach Krunic and his team for reaching the Euroleague this year. This was a tough game and not by any means an easy win for my team. Oldenburg defended very well for the most part. But in the last quarter, when we were down by 6, we made three three-pointers in a very short period of time. That, in my opinion was the key to winning the ballgame. Plus, we played better defense in the second half of the game."

Players

BOUMTJE BOUMTJE, RUBEN
EWE Baskets
"Armani Jeans Olimpia Milano is one of the best teams in Europe. So we knew it would be a very tough game for us like it turned out to be. The first three quarters we defended very hard and ran our plays very good. That was the reason why the game was so close all the time. We had a chance to win the game, but in the last four minutes of the game Milano played more effectively."
HALL, MIKE
Armani Jeans Milano
"Oldenburg was a very tough opponent for us. They played very hard defense and made some good shots. They almost dominated the whole game so it felt like a 0-4 start for us. They have some very good players in their team and it will be a tough challenge to beat them for every other team which comes here. Our three-pointers in the end of the last quarter saved the win for us."
