Mirco Turel - Stella Azzurra, 2011 Rome NIJTStella Azzurra started the Citta di Roma Tournament it hosts with the right foot with a 78-68 triumph over Gran Canaria 2014 in Group B action in Roma, Italy on Tuesday afternoon. Stella now holds a 1-0 record while Gran Canaria dropped to 0-1. Mirco Turel celebrated with 29 points, Nicolo Basile added 18 with 6 steals while Yancarlos Rodriguez had 15. Gran Canaria saw Tridon Makonda collect 22 points but committ 10 turnovers and Ismael Mahugo finished with 11 points. It was Gran Canaria that enjoyed the better start with a 13-3 lead after four minutes, but Turl started to collect points and led his team for nine unanswered points that were enough to take the lead. Basile stepped up with shots from long range to register a 13 point gap before the teams entered the half time break with Stella leading 43-31. Rodriguez was on fire early in the second half and together with Basile later on in the game maintain the double-digit lead that also reached a maximum of 23 points gap midway in the closing quarter. Tomorrow Gran Canaria will start Day 2 with a game against KK Zagreb Co while Stella Azzurra will face Dnipro in hope to remain perfect.
