THE TAKE

DKV Joventut hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv on Thursday night in Badalona, Spain, for a direct clash for second place in Group B. Joventut (6-4) has been red-hot lately, winning four of its last five games, including three in a row at home, while allowing opponents just 58.7 points per game there. That defense will face a stern test against Maccabi, the highest-scoring team in the Euroleague at 89.6 points per game. The game features Maccabi big man Jamie Arnold visiting his former club for the first time since leaving after the 2005 season. Arnold became the ULEB Cup all-time leading scorer during his stay at Joventut. Maccabi overran an injury-plagued Joventut 92-75 when these teams met in Israel in November. Joventut was limited to just 5 first-quarter points as Maccabi cruised to victory behind 20 points and 10 rebounds from center Nikola Vujcic. This week, Maccabi is coming off an 88-81 overtime loss at Lottomatica Roma which dropped its road record to 1-4 this season. The Israeli champs will be facing a much different Joventut than the one it pounded earlier in the season. Star forward Rudy Fernandez, who leads Joventut in scoring with 16.3 points per game, is expected to be fit after injuring himself in a Spanish League game over the weekend. Fernandez missed the teams' first meeting, as did center Andy Betts. Joventut head coach Aito Garcia Reneses will have a host of big men available to throw at Vujcic, who ranks third in the Euroleague in scoring (16.6 ppg.), fifth in assists (4.3 apg.) and fifth in rebounds (7.8 rpg.) -- the only player in the league ranked among the top 10 in those three categories. Betts (9.3 ppg., 1.5 bpg.), Robert Archibald (8.6 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) and Roberto Dueñas may all see time on Vujcic, undoubtedly the key to Maccabi's offense. Turnover-prone point guard Will Bynum (13.1 ppg., 3.6 apg.) will look to Yotam Halperin (8.8 ppg.), Derrick Sharp (10 ppg., 55.6% 3FG) and even Tal Burstein to help handle the ball and to stay away from Joventut's star teenager Ricky Rubio, who leads the league with 4.3 steals per contest. Veteran point guards Elmer Bennett (9.2 ppg., 3.1 apg.) and Paco Vazquez will also play key roles in trying to take Bynum out of his game. Both teams feature some sweet-shooting small forwards in Lubos Barton (10.6 ppg.) for Joventut and Simas Jasaitas (12 ppg., 54.1% 3FG) for Maccabi. A key matchup could be at power forward, where Lior Eliyahu (11.4 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) and Arnold (8.8 ppg., 5.1 rpg.) will look to feed off Vujcic for some easy points, with Charles Gaines (8.6 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and Dimitri Flis their opposites. There will be plenty of stars on the court when the ball goes up on Thursday and the question will be which team controls the pace and how does the opponent adapt. If Maccabi can score efficiently in the half-court, it will have a big advantage over Joventut, but if the hosts can generate easy points in transition, they become big favorites.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"We will wait until the same day of the game to see if Bennett and Rudy can play. Anyway, Rudy will have limited playing time because the day after playing in Madrid he could not walk well so his recovery for this duel against Maccabi will not be total. We had many injury problems so far with Bennett, Rudy and the big men. The team has always stepped up to cover them, but playing Maccabi will be different. To get the mathematical qualification it is important to win, even though it would be possible even if we lose, but we will grow as a team. We have to avoid a bad quarter as we had in Tel Aviv. Fortunately, that rarely happens to us at home as the team feels comfortable playing in Badalona with our home crowd. We expect to do our best which doesn't necessarily mean a win, but yes being satisfied with our job."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"It's going to be a very difficult game. Now, we play on the road much better than we did in the first part of the season. We have more experience. We need one more player in the rotation, because Tal is still not in full shape, but the situation is better and we need patience. We need to play better at the end of the game. Joventut has made a lot of problems for the teams that went there. The key for this game for us will be to handle their pressing, and control the rebounds and the fastbreaks. They play a very up-tempo game at home, and we'll have to handle that. This game is very crucial for the Top 16, because the winner will have very good chances to finish second in the group."

"Maccabi is a team with a lot of experience in the league, as they are one of the big ones in Europe and a dominator of the Euroleague. We already saw on our first game that they are a great team. We have to try to neutralize their game, and try to surprise them playing at home. Beating Maccabi would be a good boost for us, as we want to show we are going for that second place in our group, we are ambitious. Maccabi has great team play and they have big names like Nikola Vujcic or Jamie Arnold. We cannot focus on single players however, we have to do a great game to win and try to minimize their virtues."
HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"It's a very important game for us, and we know what's in the balance here. We got our first road win in the Euroleague in Spain against Malaga, so I hope it will happen again. We need to play better than we did last week in Roma, but we still came close to winning that game as well. The 17-point difference from the first game doesn't mean we'll have an easy game. It's very difficult to play in Badalona. They led Panathinaikos by 17 at halftime, and of course had that huge win over Unicaja, but we have no fear. I hope it will be enough to win."
DKV Joventut celebrates DKV Joventut advanced to the Top 16 and soared to second place in Group B on Thursday with a 98-92 win over Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv on Thursday night in Badalona, Spain. The game came down to the wire, but the hosts outscored Maccabi 16-3 in the final minutes and the Israeli champs missed 3 of 4 free throws in the final 11 seconds. Joventut improved to 7-4 and took a one-win lead over Maccabi in the group standings. It was the fifth win in six games for coach Aito Garcia Reneses's squad. Since Joventut has already beaten Partizan and Unicaja twice, it has mathematically made it to the next round. Maccabi lost a nail-biter on the road for the second week in a row. Rudy Fernandez came off the bench to lead Joventut with 21 points. Elmer Bennett had 15 points and 6 assists, Charles Gaines added 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Robert Archibald and Lubos Barton scored 13 apiece. Barton also dished 7 assists. Simas Jasaitas drilled five three-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 for Maccabi. Nikola Vujcic finished with 20 points, Derrick Sharp 16 and Lior Eliyahu 12 in a losing effort.

Maccabi won the opening tip, but it was Joventut that got on the board first when Ferran Laviña converted a three-point play in transition. Vujcic scored Maccabi's first points on the next possession and the visitors soon took their first lead, 5-6, after a Jasaitas triple. Laviña's circus shot restored Joventut's advantage, but Jamie Arnold quickly answered with a hook. The lead continued to switch hands on nearly every possession as a speedy, but sometimes sloppy game developed. Maccabi looked to pull away with a Will Bynum steal and one-handed jam and Sharp's triple, which gave the visitors an 11-17 lead. Three-pointers by Paco Vazquez and Rudy brought Joventut back within 2, but Eliyahu's first points followed by a Vujcic offensive rebound and score made it 20-26 after 10 minutes.

Vazquez and Bennett drilled threes early in the second period and Rudy's free throw got the hosts within 27-28, but Jasaitas and Vujcic restored a 5-point Maccabi lead. Bennett and Sharp exchanged triples, but Joventut couldn't get the stops it needed on defense to get back on top. Jasaitas drilled his third three and Vujcic dunked after an Eliyahu miss to put Maccabi up 36-44. However Bennett and Barton connected from downtown and a Gaines follow-dunk tied the score at 46-46. Arnold showed his familiarity with the Badalona baskets, sinking a pair from the line to put Maccabi back on top and Jasaitas added three the hard way to put Maccabi over the 50-point mark. After a Barton jumper, Sharp beat the buzzer with a three to send the teams to the lockers with Maccabi ahead 48-54.

Simas Jasaitis - Maccabi EliteMaccabi started the second half strong as Vujcic freed up Eliyahu for a slam. Vujcic then drew a foul inside from Andrew Betts and sank both free throws to give the Israeli champs their first double-digit lead. Joventut's first points of the period came on a pretty Bennett-to-Gaines alley-oop, which seemed to give the hosts some momentum. Barton stole the ball from Bynum and sent Rudy for a slam after which Maccabi coach Neven Spahija took a timeout. The hosts' comeback continued though with a Bennett jumper and Archibald's three-point play that trimmed the gap to 57-59. Vujcic scored for Maccabi, but Yotam Halperin then committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Rudy, which allowed Joventut to tie the score at 61-61 after another Bennett-to-Gaines alley-oop slam. Vujcic scored inside again, but Bennett answered from downtown to give the hosts their first lead since the opening minutes. Jasaitas made sure that the green team's lead would be short-lived with a triple. Arnold added a basket-plus-foul to give Maccabi a 5-point lead. But Bynum turned the ball over for the seventh time and then committed his fourth foul, which saw him take a spot on the bench. Archibald and in turn Betts made free throws to close the gap to 68-69. Vujcic and Sharp from downtown put Maccabi up 6 and after Marcelinho Huertas scored his first point of the game from the line, Sharp ended the period with a pair of free throws for a 71-76 lead heading into the final quarter.

Bennett and Sharp started the fourth quarter exchanging jumpers before Vujcic set Jasaitas up for a slam. Archibald drew Joventut back within 76-80 with three free throws, but perhaps more importantly drew Vujcic's third and fourth fouls along the way. Rudy's layup cut the gap to 2, but Yaniv Green, playing for Vujcic, scored his first basket for Maccabi. Jasaitas drilled one more three – his fifth – for a 78-85 lead midway through the final period. After a Huertas layup, Maccabi's Lithuanian forward corrected a Green miss to keep the visitors in control. Barton drove the baseline for a basket, but an Eliyahu basket inside with two-and-a-half minutes to play was like a dagger to Joventut's hopes. However Gaines brought the hosts within 5 and Green committed an offensive foul to give Joventut reason to believe. Barton missed a three-point attempt, but Halperin fouled Rudy on the rebound and his free throws made it a 3-point game. Vujcic set up Eliyahu inside, but Archibald took him down with a foul. The rookie forward sank both. However Barton answered with a three to make it 89-91 with a minute to go. Halperin lost the ball and Badalona raced down for a Rudy slam to tie the game with 40 seconds left. Halperin drove for a layup and missed and Archibald was the first to the other side for a wide-open slam and a Joventut lead. Maccabi went inside to Vujcic, who was fouled with 11 seconds remaining. But the All-Euroleague center missed the first. Joventut beat the Maccabi trap for a Rudy layup and a 3-point lead. Joventut sent Sharp to the line and he also missed the first. He then missed the second on purpose, but Rudy grabbed the rebound and with it guaranteed a well-deserved win for the hosts which made Joventut keep fighting for Euroleague glory in the Top 16.

"I am happy for the faith we had in the end and the good accuracy in the final minutes. We defeated Maccabi, a great team with talented players such as Vujcic and great outside shooting. We have to remain humble and keep on working to play at our maximum. I want to thank the crowd who showed up today, too. We had as much fun as them with this game."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Congratulations to Joventut for the win. We played well for 35 minutes but in the last 5 we weren't there. We played against an excellent team that we knew played well, but they showed againtonight that they can go far. We led for 75% of the game but we missed down the stretch."

Players

VAZQUEZ, PACO
DKV Joventut
"It was a great game. I want to highlight the faith we had when they were away and dominated the game. But we were better down the stretch and I am glad that the 8000 fans that came here tonight had a good time against such a great team as Maccabi Elite."
ARNOLD, JAMIE
Maccabi Elite
"I have to congratulate my former team for their good game. They played with energy and concentrated in defense at the end. We didn't know how to keep dominating the game. Joventut is a team that plays great andis always like a block despite having stellar players."
