THE TAKE

DKV Joventut will have second place on its mind when it hosts Union Olimpija Ljubljana on Thursday at the Palau Olimpic in Badalona, Spain. Joventut (7-6) will claim second place in Group B and with it a second seed ahead of next week's Top 16 draw if it wins and Maccabi Tel Aviv loses its game against group champ Panathinaikos. Both games tip off at the same time. Joventut can't fall further than third and could still wind up second if it loses, Maccabi loses and Partizan beats Unicaja. But Joventut cannot take Olimpija (4-9) lightly. Although they have no chance of advancing to the next round, the Slovenian champs proved last week that they are made of true fighting spirit when they downed Maccabi 77-75. Olimpija's new-look side, which included three players making their debut for the club, made a dozen three-pointers on the way to the win. Teemu Rannikko drained four from downtown and Domen Lorbek added three on his way to a season-high 17 points. Badalona committed 18 turnovers as it lost last week at Cibona and has now dropped back-to-back games after winning five of six before that. Joventut edged Olimpija 67-69 when they met last month behind Rudy Fernandez's 17 points. Fernandez (16.1 ppg., 46.5% 3FG) figures to be the first choice for coach Aito Garcia Reneses on offense against this week, with small forward Lubos Barton (11.5 ppg.) firing away on the other end. For Olimpija, Manu Markoishvili (10.1 ppg.) and Lorbek (8.2 ppg.) have played larger roles lately, with Rannikko (14 ppg., 3.3 apg.) running the show. The experienced Elmer Bennett (8.9 ppg., 3.3 apg.) and teenage super-sub Ricky Rubio (3.4 apg., 3.8 spg.), who can set the record for best steals per game average in the Euroleague regular season with at least one this week, are the motors for Joventut. Robert Archibald (9.1 ppg., 4.9 rpg.) and Charles Gaines (9.6 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) are the key figures in the Joventut frontcourt. They will matchup against Hasan Rizvic, Ivica Jurkovic (9.4 ppg.) and Goran Jurak. An exiting game can be expected as Joventut looks to move into the Top 16 with some momentum, while Olimpija plays for pride. A key encounter worth keeping an eye on is Joventut's rising star, Fernandez, against Lorbek, who is cutting his teeth this season with the hope of great things to come.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"A victory tomorrow would be very important if you consider that when we entered the Euroleague, we were down at a level with the newcomers, not with the good teams. Now, if we manage to win this game, we'll be in the second draw level for the Top 16. Later, that might not mean such a great advantage, because any team from the fourth level can beat you. Still, our progression in the second half of the regular season has been fantastic, and we want to prove it again by winning against Olimpija. They have changed some players and afterwards were able to defeat a team as big as Maccabi in Ljubljana."
OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"Our season is coming to an end, but we won't lack motivation in our last game, considering that a victory will help us avoid finishing last. Our morale and our health are good and our new players are integrating well into the team. Goran Jurak has shown in these first games that he is a good opcion under the rims for us. We want to say goodbye with a victory, but at the same time we know that beating Joventut on its home floor is very dificult."

Players

VAZQUEZ, PACO
DKV Joventut
"When we began the competition, we wanted to compete well and enjoy ourselves. Now that we've achieved the ticket to the Top 16, we are very satisfied, but going after the same objectives: to keep competing, and no matter what happens in the draw, we hae to think that this is a gift for us and we have to enjoy it to the max as we have done until now. As for tomorrow's game, we just have to keep working to win and playing like a team. Olimpija is a team with players who can get hot and do a lot of damage. I think it's a game that can be difficult for us. We'll have to pay attention, above all on defense."
JURAK, GORAN
Union Olimpija
"The motivation to play well in a competition like the Euroleague is never lacking. I am sure that all of our players will give our maximum. We are practicing well and I think we can play a good game in Badalona and say goodbye with a victory away from home."
Teemu Rannikko - Union Olimpija Already-eliminated Union Olimpija left the Euroleague behind in style by rallying for an 82-86 road win over Group B rival DKV Joventut in Badalona, Spain on Thursday. It was Olimpija's second big upset win in a row, taking the sting out of finishing last in Group B at 5-9. Joventut fell to 7-7 with its third consecutive defeat, but could not have moved up from third place anyway. Olimpija trailed by 11 points early in the second half before staging a takeover early in the final quarter and holding on to win. Teemu Rannikko hit 6 late free throws among his game-high 22 points to seal the deal. Domen Lorbek added 18 points for the winners and Manuchar Markoishvili 17. Those three combined to make 10 triples as Olimpija went 11-for-22 from the arc to make and sustain its comeback. For Joventut, Rudy Fernandez had a team'high 18 points. Charles Gaines added 14 while Lubos Barton registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Fernandez put down a layup and Elmer Bennett a triple in the very first minute. When Domen Lorbek and Ivica Jurkovic got 4 quick points back for Olimpija, Fernandez rained a three-pointer, too, for an 8-4 Joventut lead. Olimpija was unfazed as Manuchar Markoishvili, Lorbek and Jurkovic kept scoring to even the board at 10-10. Lorbek's layup-plus-free throw then gave the visitors their first lead, but Fernandez matched him with a shot from downtown to tie 13-13. Joventut's defense ruled for a couple minutes while Gaines hit 4 free throws and Paco Vazquez his team's fourth triple in 8 minutes for a 7-0 run and 20-13 scoreboard. Rannikko did what he could for Olimpija, offsetting more points by Gaines and Vazquez with free throws and a quarter-ending layup to keep the difference down to 24-17 after 10 minutes.

Markoishvili hit Olimpija's first triple early in the second quarter, while Joventut went inside to Gaines and Andrew Betts to lead 28-20. Now it was Olimpija's defense that took over for a few minutes while Goran Jurak and Rannikko teamed up for 6 unanswered points. Joventut stayed one step ahead, even when Rannikko's next shot from downtown landed good for a 32-31 scoreboard. That's when Joventut revived as Gaines dunked, Lubos Barton hit free throws and Robert Archibald made a layup-plus-free trhow for a new eight-point difference, 39-31. Markoishvili and Lorbek, with a triple, helped Rannikko keep Olimpija within 41-38. Even when Fernandez struck from long-range, Jurak went inside and Markoishvili canned a triple to make it a whole new game, 44-43, at halftime.

Elmer Bennett - DKV JoventutThe battle was joined and the teams traded baskets early in the third quarter until Ferran Laviña, Fernandez and Betts combined on 6 straight points for Joventut and Barton soon added a triple for a double-digit lead, 59-48. Olimpija didn't notice. Instead, Lorbek exploded with a pair of blasts from downtown around a layup by Markoishvili to make it 59-56. When Jurkovic struck from the arc a couple minutes later, it was all tied up, 60-60. Sandi Cebular took Olimpija's first lead with a jumper at 61-62, but a Marcelo Huertas triple and a late layup by Gaines allowed Joventut to escape the third quarter with a 66-62 advantage.

With a couple inside baskets, Archibald kept Joventut from losing its lead again early in the foruth quarter, even though Rannikko kept Olimpija close with a triple. Saulius Kuzminskas and Jurak got the visitors within a single point again, 70-69. Betts gave the hosts a reprieve, but then it was all Olimpija as Markoishvili's next three-pointer highlighted a 0-6 blast with which the guests went ahead 72-75. Joventut had only that layup by Betts to show for 5 minutes until Laviña made free throws, but Lorbek answered immediately from downtown for a 74-78 lead with 2 minutes left. Fernandez made 1 of 2 at the line and Bennett returned with a triple, but then it was all Rannikko, who hit 6 of 6 free throws down the stretch to let Olimpija leave the competition in style, with its second win in a row.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"We finish third but that is a positive thing for us. We played a serious competition at an excellent level. We thought we would be in the second level of the draw, but we will be in the third now. Anyway, all the rivals of the Top 16 are tough so it really doesn't matter. I am generally happy with my players, but tonight it was obvious we thought we would win before playing the game and it was not like that, of course."
OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"For us it is a beautiful way to end our presence in the Euroleague. We had two big straight wins against Maccabi and Joventut. I want to congratulate my players because we had optios to win during all the game, and we did it. They are a great team but we were better tonight."

Players

BENNETT, ELMER
DKV Joventut
"We were not concentrated in several phases of the game and we have to look deep into our mistakes. We have to be at 100 percent in all games and now I leave the regular season unhappy for not having won at home in front of the fans that supported us during the 40 minutes."
RANNIKKO, TEEMU
Union Olimpija
"This is a good win for us. We were out before this game, but our morale will thank winning games like this. It was not my best game tonight, but I contributed to my team's effort. The last six free throws would have not been important if we had not worked during all the game."
