THE TAKE

The defending champions could become Group E's first qualifier to the next round when DKV Joventut welcomes CSKA Moscow to Palau Olympic in Badalona, Spain on Wednesday. CSKA (3-0) has won 14 straight Euroleague games, will assure itself a place in the Quarterfinal Playoffs and will be very close to clinching first place in Group E if it wins on Wednesday. Joventut (1-2) has its own playoff aspirations, which would get a major boost should it defeat the champs. Tied with Partizan and Olympiacos, who also play each other on Wednesday, Joventut would tie for second place with a victory. Joventut kept it close throughout the first half when these teams met in Moscow for the Top 16 opener last month, but CSKA allowed just 6 third-quarter points on the way to an 81-69 victory. Matjaz Smodis scored a season-high 24 points to lead CSKA that night and remained hot in the next two games as well, earning MVP of the Month honors for February. This time, however, Smodis and his teammates might not have all-Euroleague point guard Theodoros Papaloukas to help them as he is nursing a minor injury and considered questionable for the game. At the same time, Joventut doesn't have Lubos Barton, who hurt his shoulder and is out for the rest of the round. Joventut will depend on veteran playmaker Elmer Bennett for leadership to cope with the CSKA juggernaut on the court. Bennett (8.1 ppg., 3 apg.) and teenage steals king Ricky Rubio (3.1 apg., 3.4 spg.) join Rudy Fernandez (16.4 ppg.) in a backcourt that is not only solid, but exciting. They'll take on CSKA's established guard rotation of J.R. Holden (9.6 ppg.) and Trajan Langdon (12.5 ppg.). Joventut's backcourt will have to be at the top of its game even if Papaloukas (10.1 ppg., 5.4 apg.) is not playing. CSKA has seen new addition Oscar Torres (10 ppg., 2 spg.) score in bunches at the small forward spot. Inside, both teams have deep and tall frontlines, each with a 2.17-meter starting center, Andy Betts for Joventut and Aleksey Savrasenko for CSKA. Power forward Charles Gaines (9.8 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) and center Robert Archibald (8.8 ppg.) are the other main ingredients inside for Joventut, roles maintained by Smodis (14 ppg.) and David Andersen (10.1 ppg.) for CSKA. With last season's Coach of the Year, Ettore Messina, on the sidelines, there's no doubt that CSKA won't take the opponent lightly. But that may not be enough against a hungry Joventut side that learned last time in Moscow what it takes to compete with the best and now wants to apply that to the entire game.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"Tomorrow we face the European champions. CSKA is a complete team with incredible potential that plays very well, with lots of options both inside and outside. They play with a great defense that imposes a high rhythm during the whole game. Considering all this that I mention, I know that our options of winning are small, but some always exist. It would help if we keep improving on offense, something our big men still haven't done, but the perimeter players have. We hope to maintain a level of shooting accuracy and also the defensive intensity that let us win our last Spanish League game."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We played in the first leg of Top16 in a good way. But in the second we have two games on the road. We start with the trip to Badalona. We face an athletic team that runs the court very well. It could be difficult for us as Papaloukas is struggling with the little injury he received in a game of the Russian championship. He was out of some of our practices, but I hope he would be ready to play by Wednesday. As for the game itself: it is very important for us to control the tempo."

Players

FLIS, DIMITRI
DKV Joventut
"The game tomorrow will be one of the key ones in the qualification race, so we have to try to win it however we can. We have a win and two losses, which makes our position a little uncomfortable, so we have to face this game thinking only in victory. For me, CSKA is one of the best teams in Europe and to beat them will be difficult. With CSKA, what's scary is they have a roster full of great players and no one stands out more than another. Our doctrine will be to work hard on defense because with CSKA's long bench, it's very difficult to know which player can beat you. We have to defend as best we can and look forward always."
TORRES, OSCAR
CSKA Moscow
"This is a difficult game. Joventut plays well, especially at home. They are a very good team that is used to playing hard. We must be prepared to play well, the same as we did in Greece, and to show 100-percent concentration both on offense and defense."
JR Holden - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow became the first team to make it to the Quarterfinal Playoffs in Group E by downing DKV Joventut 65-73 in Badalona, Spain on Wednesday night. CSKA improved to 4-0 and will be the Group E champion if it wins any of its two remaining games. Meanwhile, Joventut dropped to 1-3 and faces a make-or-break home game against Partizan next week. J.R. Holden led the winners with 17 points. Matjaz Smodis added 14 while Trajan Langdon had 13 for CSKA. Rudy Fernandez had 14 points for Joventut, Robert Archibald added 12 points and Charles Gaines 11. Smodis and an outstanding Holden allowed CSKA to get a double-digit margin, 32-42, at halftime. CSKA improved its defense after the break, not allowing any easy shots. Meanwhile, Langdon had 9 points in the third quarter to boost the guests' lead to 45-58 after 30 minutes. Smodis and Oscar Torres soon broke the game open, 47-66, as CSKA left the court knowing it will keep fighting for Euroleague glory.

Ferran Laviña got Joventut on the scoreboard with a three-pointer from the top of the circle, but Joventut failed to get any more easy shots in the early going. Holden shined with an electric driving layup while Trajan Langdon buried a step-back jumper for a 3-4 CSKA lead. Joventut went scoreless for more than 3 minutes until Gaines hit a short shot but Holden answered from downtown to keep CSKA ahead, 5-7. Gaines followed a jump hook with an easy basket but a triple by Torres allowed CSKA to regain the lead, 9-10, after 6 minutes. Holden nailed a jumper that Dimitri Flis erased with a long two-pointer. Holden kept pacing CSKA with free throws and Anton Ponkrashov added a layup-plus-foul shot that boosted the guests in front by 11-17. David Andersen capped a 2-12 CSKA run with free throws but Archibald stepped up with a three-point play and Fernandez added a buzzer-beating eight-meter bomb to bring Joventut within 17-21 after 10 minutes.

Rudy Fernandez - DKV JoventutAleksey Savrasenko shined with a fastbreak layup early in the second quarter that Fernandez matched with foul shots. Joventut tried fullcourt pressure but Smodis broke it with an easy basket. Marcelinho Huertas buried a big triple and Fernandez added a driving layup to get Joventut as close as 23-25. Smodis responded with a three-point play but CSKA had already entered the foul bonus. Huertas followed free throws with a driving layup, as Joventut kept trying fullcourt pressure as often as possible. Savrasenko and Holden allowed CSKA to stay ahead, 26-33. Smodis emerged again with a put-back basket while Torres added a floating layup to give CSKA its first double-digit lead, 27-37. Huertas and Smodis traded jumpers but CSKA kept shining on defense. Meanwhile, Thomas Van den Spiegel provided a highlight with a power dunk before a corner triple by Paco Vazquez brought Joventut within 32-42 at the end of an intense first half.

Smodis got the second half going with a jump hook as CSKA's defense continued refusing to allow Joventut easy shots. Langdon added an off-balance driving layup for the visitors that Gaines matched with a big basket in the low post. Joventut kept looking for its big men inside, as Archibald's reverse layup got the hosts within 36-46. Ricky Rubio found his first points on free throws but Langdon copied him at the other end and added a fallaway jumper for a 38-50 CSKA lead. Joventut kept struggling and veen when Fernandez and Rubio returned to court, Andersen took over with a layup-plus-foul, good for a 40-53 CSKA lead. Flis tried to ignit the Joventut comeback wuth a fast break dunk but Theo Papaloukas erased with a smooth layup and Langdon fired in one from downtown to make it a 15-point game, 43-58. Free throws by Fernandez gave Joventut some hope, 45-58, at the end of the third quarter.

Theo Papaloukas - CSKA MoscowGaines tried to get Joventut back into the game with a jump hook but Smodis answered with his trademark triple from the top of the key, good for a 47-61 CSKA lead. Savrasenko soon added a put-back basket and grabbed an offensive rebounds that allowed Torres to fire in a corner triple that broke the game open, 47-66. Joventut had lost control now but Fernandez stepped up with a mid-range jumper. Vazquez buried a triple off a Joventut timeout and Archibald added a close basket to get the guests within 54-66 with 4 minutes to go. Langdon shined with a driving layup that Huertas copied in the other end. Papaloukas showed its talent with an outstanding basket and Joventut simply ran out of time, as CSKA returned to Moscow with a playoff berth, after yet another defensive exhibition.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"CSKA's potential was clear in the first half and it is easy to explain why they were ahead at halftime. Under these circumstances, and above all, we have to congratulate CSKA for having such a great team, not only because of its individuals, but as a collective, too. Analyzing our game, our main problem was that we were in a rush in the first half. You make mistakes because you find trouble, and you have to give CSKA credit for that. We have to control our temper when they play hard defense and carry on playing hard. It was all consequence of CSKA's defensive game and how they controlled the game in the first half. We improved in the second half, but it is difficult to play against a team like CSKA because you always want to win."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It was a difficult game, just as we expected, as Joventut is a very good team. They have athletic players and are able to play intense defense. It would have been possible for a tall team like ours to lose control or commit more turnovers. We controlled the game rhythm and we managed to get a good win against a very good Joventut. We are not first yet, we need to beat Olympiacos next week. If we play a bad game and they beat us by 21 points they will have a chance, but I hope that won't happen."

Players

BETTS, ANDY
DKV Joventut
"We are very disappointment because we wanted to put up a better fight that we did today. We have to fight until the end now and keep fighting until we run out of chances. Whenever you depend on yourself, everything is on your own hands, so we can't give up the fight."
ARCHIBALD, ROBERT
DKV Joventut
"It is tough to lose but, CSKA, for me, is the best team in Europe without doubt. They have a great coach and great players that play together. When we looked at the schedule, we knew that if we beat Olympiacos at home we would have a chance in the final game, and now we know that if we win our last game against Partizan, we have a final game against Olympiacos that will decide who will have the chance to go through. We have to try to beat Partizan and we will have a chance. We have to continue working and I hope for the best. The Euroleague is about playing against the best teams and the best players, competing and for me, a fun part of the game is to go against the best teams in Europe."
VAN DEN SPIEGEL, TOMAS
CSKA Moscow
"First of all, I want to say that this is very tough place to play. We knew Olympiacos lost in here and we knew we had to be consistent to get a win. This is what we did, 40 minutes of intense defense, and this is the way we win games. It is good because we are first, we are 4-0 and it takes the pressure off a little bit. We want to win both games remaining, of course, and see who we will face in the next round."
TORRES, OSCAR
CSKA Moscow
"I think CSKA is a very interesting team. Talented with players who give everything on court and in practice, too. All players are together in this, and this is what help us to win. I believe that it is important to stay focused. The more wins we get, the more confidence we will have. We have to keep on winning no matter what."
LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"It was not another game for us, it was a tough game. It was a good win for us and good preparation for our future games. It doesn't matter how many wins you get in a row, it is all about winning the important games. We understand that and we are trying to get to that point where we can win those important games."
