THE TAKE

Two of the hottest teams in the Euroleague right now are set to face each other in Rome, Italy, on Thursday when Lottomatica hosts Fenerbahce Ulker in Group C. Both teams are undefeated in November, registering quality wins along the way. In his month, Lottomatica beat Union Olimpija and Tau Ceramica on the road. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce downed DKV Joventut on the road and Olimpija in double overtime at home. Above all, it is the showdown between two of the players in best shape all around the continent, Sani Becirovic of Lottomatica and Emir Preldzic of FB Ulker. Becirovic leads a very deep Lottomatica backcourt that also includes up-and-coming playmaker Brandon Jennings, as well as Allan Ray and Ibby Jaaber. There is some good news for Fener, as Omer Onan is back and ready to face Becirovic as his team's top defensive stopper. Jaaber and Jennings will have a big matchup between pass-first playmaker Marques Green and scoring guard Damir Mrsic, as Gordan Giricek may not yet ready to play. Lottomatica will be very concerned about stopping Preldzic, a natural-born mismatch due to his versatility, talent and creativity. Preldzic will have a tough matchup against two physical defenders in Rodrigo De La Fuente and Roberto Gabini, but he will have some help from Rasim Basak and Devin Smith at small forward. The battle in the paint will be equally interesting, even though FB Ulker is still without Semih Erden and Omer Asik. With both players sidelined, rebounding machine Mirsad Turkcan and old-school center Oguz Savas will take charge. Physical power forwards Enes Kanter and Gasper Vidmar will offer aggressiveness and determination. Turkcan will test his skills against Andre Hutson, while Vidmar and Savas are ready to battle against Primoz Brezec. Angelo Gigli will play a key role for Roma off the bench. Roma needs to play up-tempo and get Becirovic involved, as he has been nothing but unstoppable lately. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce has to play physical and make the most out of its athleticism, especially around the baskets. Only one of these two red-hot squads will finish the month undefeated and we’ll know which one on Thursday night.

GAME QUOTES

Lottomatica Roma
  • Guard Sani Becirovic has scored 23 points in each of his last two Euroleague games. This has been the first time that he has topped the 20-point mark in back-to-back Euroleague games since February 2001, when he accomplished the feat in the Quarterfinal Playoffs for Union Olimpija against Virtus Bologna.
  • Guard Allan Ray may want to forget his past games against Fenerbahce Ulker. In two games last season, Ray averaged 6 points on a combined 1 for 12 in two-point shots and 3 for 11 from behind the arc.
Fenerbahce Ulker
  • Mirsad Turkcan was a major factor as Fenerbahce Ulker beat Lottomatica twice in the regular season last year. He averaged 13 points, 15 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in those two games. Turkcan has produced 45 career double doubles in the Euroleague, more than any other player. All of them have been point-rebound double doubles.
  • Shooting guard Gordan Giricek could make his Fenerbahce Ulker Euroleague debut this week. Giricek has an active streak of nine straight Euroleague games with at least 20 points scored, which started in January 2002.
  • Omer Onan experienced his best shooting night of the season last year in the trip to Rome. Onan made 3 of 4 three-pointers en route to 14 points – 1 off his season high.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We lost the last three games in our national league, so the match with Fenerbahce is an important test to measure which is our value and how big is our ambition. I want to see again the team spirit that we showed in Ljubljana and Vitoria."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It’s another important and very difficult away game for us. We are trying to find the shape and rhythm we had before the last couple of Turkish League matches. We are suffering from injuries since than the beginning of the season and this is the most important reason for the tiredness that my players caught at the moment. Lottomatica Roma is not the team of last year as they brought some new key players. They are playing much better than last season. But we also put experience on the last season’s efforts with our young team. Anyway, I’m confident that my players will put give hearts and forget the last two losses in our local league. We will be digging for a win there."

Players

TONOLLI, ALESSANDRO
Lottomatica Roma
"Fenerbahce is a very strong team that last year finished among the best eight and this year has been built to go beyond. They are well covered in every role. After three defeats in the Italian League, we want to come back to victory as we did in Vitoria. We will have to play as we know, like a real team, with concentration from the first minute."
KANTER, ENES
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Both us and Lottomatica Roma have just one lose in the group and that makes the game more exciting. We will try to add another advantage to our present situation by winning there in Rome. We knew that the winner will have a bonus in the group for the future. It doesn’t make any sense to lose two straight games in the Turkish League for us. The only thing we want is to win this game, nothing else."
Andre Hutson - Lottomatica RomaFor the first time in its recent Euroleague history, Lottomatica Roma holds a regular season group's first place exclusively after it downed visiting Fenerbahce Ulker 76-67 on Thursday in a physical battle dominated by big men. The victory left Roma with a 4-1 record in Group C midway through the regular season, a victory ahead of both Fenerbahce and Tau Ceramica. The difference was just 70-67 headed into the final 2 minutes, but Andre Hutson and Sani Becirovic, along with Roma's defense, settled the matter convincingly then. Hutson finished with a career-high 26 points that included 11-for-11 foul shooting as he sustained medium-sized leads for Roma much of the game. Rodrigo De la Fuente contributed a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Becirovic had 11 points and 7 assists for the winners. Fenerbahce got a huge performance from Mirsad Turkcan, whose 46th career double-double was 21 points and 14 rebounds, including 4 three-pointers. Oguz Savas was the only other double-digit scorer for Fenerbahce, with 10 points.

Becirovic scored a layup off the opening tipoff. Fenerbahce took its first lead on a corner triple by Rasim Basak, who came back a minite later and blasted another from downtown to make it 2-6. Turkcan hooked in an offensive rebound to extend Fenerbahce's advantage, but Hutson finally downed free throws and a short jumper to get Roma moving again. After Angelo Gigli hit a free throw, Becirovic completed a fastbreak to put Roma ahead and De la Fuente put back an offensive rebound at 12-8. Devin Smith scored on the break for Fenerbahce, but De la Fuente answerd in the post at 14-10. Hutson kept drawing fouls to make it 16-10 before Savas and Smith drew Fenerbahce within 17-14. Becirovic ended the quarter, too, with free throws that preserved a 19-14 edge for the hosts.

Devin Smith - Fenerbahce UlkerTo open the second quarter, veteran Fenerbahce swingman Omer Onan scored in his first minute on-court since a pre-season injury, and Damir Mrsic seconded him with a huge three-pointer to tie it all up, 19-19. Roberto Gabini kept the lead in Roma's hands with a long jumper and soon went from even longer for a triple to make it 24-19. Brandon Jennings marked his arrival with a steal and free throw, then De la Fuente went backdoor for a 27-19 lead. Great ball movement led to Savas scoring for Fenerbahce, but Primoz Brezec answered with free throws at 29-21. Turkcan ended an exchange of misses with a big triple, then Emir Preldzic copied him from the corner to force a Roma timeout at 29-27. De la Fuente found a short jumper to restart Roma, and scoring stalled for both teams until Gabini launched from way downtown to make it 34-27. Gabini then assisted Hutson for a three-point play that meant the game's first double-digit lead, 37-27. Another of Fenerbahce's long-injured players, Semih Erden, scored his first point of the season, a free throw, to which Smith added a pair, cutting the difference to 37-30 at halftime.

Roma's defense ruled after the break as Huston and Ibrahim Jabber quickly re-established the double-digit lead with baskets at 41-30. Almost 3 minutes passed before Gasper Vidmar put through an offensive rebound for Fenerbahce. Hutson continued to dominate with more free throws and another inside basket at 45-33. Smith dunked for Fenerbahce, and after an empty couple minutes, Turkcan rang from downtown again to lower the difference to single digits, 46-38. Gabini fed Hutson for a dunk, but Turkcan sank free throws and fed Savas for a slam to cut it further, to 48-42. Becirovic stopped the bleeding for Roma, and when Hutson popped a jumper, the lead was back to double-digits. Turkcan and Savas kept battling, however, and Roma needed a late Jennings dunk to stay up 54-45 after 30 minutes.

A big three-point play by Brezec to start the final quarter had Roma looking comfortable at 57-45. He was back soon for another basket and the game's biggest lead yet, 61-47, but Mrsic kept Fenerbahce's head in the game with another big triple. After Turkcan and Hutson exchanged free throws, Mrsic was back launching from deep, and just like that, the scoreboard read 63-57. Even when Jennings added free throws and Allan Ray's first basket made it 67-57, the visitors didn't stop rallying. Turkcan now blasted a three-pointer from the corner, and soon Smith assisted Savas nicely to make it 67-62. Roma kept missing and Turkcan kept battling, getting 2 more free throws to fall for a 67-64 scoreboard. Out of nowhere, Gigli appeared on the arc for Roma, took a pass from Becirovic and buried his shot. But then, Turkcan - who else? - answered with his own triple for a 70-67 score with 2 minutes left. Next, Becirovic found Hutson for a dunk at 72-67, where the score stayed going into the final minute. That's when Becirovic settled it with a stop-and-go layup along the baseline to end the threat and leave Roma in first place alone in Group C.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"We played a bad game, but in the end we won. I wasn't expecting at this point that we would be in first place alone with four victories and one defeat. What I liked today was how we defended, everyone together, with great team spirit, but in attack we need to do better."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Neither team played good basketball. I am sorry for this defeat. We got close to Rome, but we have not been able to finish the job. "

Players

GABINI, ROBERTO
Lottomatica Roma
"Today we have accomplished an important victory, proving to ourselves that if we play as a team, we can achieve positive results. Being in first place? We remain down to earth."
GREEN, MARQUES
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Roma played great as a team. We tried to reach them, but every time we got close to them, they slipped away. They have been up in the score for the whole game. Rome deserves first place."
