THE TAKE

Two teams hoping to extend their respective winning streaks are set to face each other in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Union Olimpija welcomes DKV Joventut on Thursday. Olimpija registered its first 2008-09 Euroleague win against Alba Berlin last week, while Joventut downed Tau Ceramica 105-100 in an instant classic. Edu Hernandez-Sonseca became the Week 5 MVP with 24 points and 10 points off the Joventut bench. Hernandez-Sonseca is ready for a big matchup against Mirza Begic, who should play despite some recent stomach issues. Even without Pops Mensah-Bonsu around, Joventut has an interesting frontcourt that also features young Henk Norel and three-point specialists Jan Jagla and Luka Bogdanovic. Olimpija will miss star forward Marko Milic, but Begic and Vladimir Golubovic will step up at center against Hernandez-Sonseca and Norel. Meanwhile, Miha Zupan and Ivica Jurkovic will test their shooting skills against Bogdanovic and Jagla. Olimpija is also having problems at point guard, as Vlado Ilievski missed the Adriatic League game last weekend. Even though he is expected to be back, expect rookie Mirza Sarajlija, Jaka Klobucar and even Saso Ozbolt to see minutes at point guard if Ilievski can't play. Joventut also has problems at point guard since teen sensation Ricky Rubio is still sidelined. Demond Mallet has been the only point guard available for coach Sito Alonso, with combo guard Pau Ribas helping him. Ozbolt is set to test his scoring skills against Bracey Wright. There is good news for Olimpija in that Jasmin Hukic, although not 100% healthy, is back in action at small forward. Frank Robinson, Klobucar and Damjan Rudez are set to help Olimpija at the wings. Simas Jasaitis should play a major role in this game against Hukic and Robinson. Pere Tomas and Ferran Laviña are set to provide driving skills and intensity for Joventut. Olimpija needs to slow down the game tempo and look for Zupan and Begic in the middle to take Hernandez-Sonseca into foul trouble. Meanwhile, Joventut needs defensive intensity and to carry on playing the way it did in its last two games, combining for 221 points against iurbentia Bilbao Basket in the Spanish League and Tau in the Euroleague.

GAME QUOTES

Union Olimpija
  • Guard Vlado Ilievski’s next steal will give him 150 for his Euroleague Basketball career. He ranks 12th among active players in that category.
  • Center Miha Zupan is coming off the best two games of his Euroleague career. Two games, ago he recorded his first career double-double and last week he matched his career-high with 19 points while shooting 4 for 7 from downtown.
DKV Joventut
  • Point guard Demond Mallet has made at least 1 three-pointer in 15 consecutive Euroleague appearances dating back to November 2006, when he played for Rheinenegie Cologne. He finished the 2006-07 season with a three in 10 straight games and has made 1 in each game this season with DKV Joventut.
  • Center Edu Hernandez-Sonseca was named weekly MVP for the first time in his career last week after posting 24 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Rookie big man Henk Norel is coming off his most productive Euroleague game of the season with 10 points in 19 minutes last week against Tau Ceramica.
  • Guard Pau Ribas established season highs of 12 points and 5 assists in last week’s win over Tau.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"In the first game in Badalona we already played well. We were right there with DKV Joventut during three of the four quarters, but in the last 10 minutes we committed too many mistakes to run away with the win. Since then, things have changed and I am sure that we can play a good game and, with the win, keep on dreaming about the Top 16. We have several injury problems but I do hope that everyone, except for Marko Milic, will be able to play Thursday. Mainly, with Jasmin Hukic we are a different group. He gives us the tranquility we need and even though he can only play for a couple of minutes, he can make the difference. I hope that the Tivoli will be packed and that the fans bring a lot of positive energy with them. We need them at home so I think that the crowd can be a decisive factor in this game."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"About Union Olimpija I can say that so far, their games in the regular season have been good. The only negative thing they can say is that they failed to grab several wins but always by small margins, Tau won by one in the last second with Vlado Ilievski missing the winning shot, Fenerbahce Ulker also won in the overtime... I think they are a team that can beat you at any given game, even more at their home. The only thing we have to do is step up our level and play better than we did in the first game against them. I think we have already improved as a team since then. We are missing key players as everybody knows, and now we also have to add Demond Mallet to the injury list. We'll see if we can handle those absences and talk about the players who will be there: Pau Ribas and Josep Franch. We have to focus on maintaining intensity for as long as possible. I think we succeeded last week against Tau but we still have to improve on that game by game."

"Playing 35 minutes per game or more is starting to take its toll. I have problems with a muscle in my leg, but as I left my problems aside in the game against Alba Berlin. I will do the same with this one. Joventut is for sure a strong rival that is entering a positive streak in the last weeks, but I am sure that if we play aggressive and brave we can beat them. We are aware of what this game means to us. With a win we can still leave the Top 16 door open."
LAVIÑA, FERRAN
DKV Joventut
"I think that after having beaten Tau here, we have a little more room for ourselves, but the game at Union Olimpija will be really important to us. If we would have lost to Tau it would definitely be a do or die game for us in Ljubljana. The team knows that if we win it will be important for us, as a road game is crucial to advance to the Top 16. The team knows what the problems are, and we are working hard to fix it. Any injury problem is important because it affects the way we play. The fact of not having a replacement at any given time, makes us play a little more conservative, and that is not our style. I am sure that Josep Franch will be able to help us anyway as he has been doing lately."
Pau Ribas - DKV JoventutDKV Joventut took a step forwards in its race to reach the Top 16 in Group C by downing Union Olimpija 65-86 in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Thursday night. Joventut improved to 3-3 and ties with Fenerbahce Ulker for the third spot in Group C. Meanwhile, Olimpija dropped to 1-5 and is two wins away from the Top 16 cut with just four games to go. Luka Bogdanovic led the winners with 16 points. Bracey Wright and Edu Hernandez-Sonseca each added 14 while Ferran Laviña had 13 for Joventut. There were some good news for Joventut, as star guard Ricky Rubio returned to action with 2 assists and a steal in less than 3 minutes. Jasmin Hukic and Frank Robinson led Olimpija each with 15 points. A three-pointer by Hukic gave Olimpija its only lead, 16-14, early in the second quarter. Laviña, Bogdanovic and Hernandez-Sonseca stepped up to put Joventut back ahead, 31-38, at halftime. Laviña kept pacing DKV after the break and got some help from Pau Ribas and Simas Jasaitis to make it a 17-point game, 45-62, after 30 minutes. Olimpija never recovered, as Joventut cruised to a well-deserved, convicing road win.

Joventut coach Sito Alonso shocked everyone by placing Josep Franch in the starting lineup. Bogdanovic got DKV going with a three-pointer while Jasaitis added a tip-in for a 2-5 lead. Olimpija missed open shots in the early going and did not lock the defensive rebound either. Meanwhile, Bogdanovic buried a jumper for a 2-7 Joventut lead after 4 minutes. Olimpija found a go-to guy in Robinson, who scored in penetration to get the crowd involved. Hernandez-Sonseca scored in the other end but Mirza Begic got the hosts within 6-9. Begic had consecutive blocks on Hernandez-Sonseca and made free throws but Bracey Wright banked in a mid-range shot to keep Joventut ahead, 8-11. Robinson beat the shot clock with an acrobatic put-back layup, as Olimpija had improved its defense late in this period. Ribas stepped up with a seven-meter bomb but Hukic answered from downtown off an Olimpija timeout to keep the hosts within 13-14 after 10 minutes.

Frank Robinson - Union OlimpijaAnother three-pointer by Hukic gave Olimpija its first lead, 16-14, early in the second quarter. Laviña shined with a three-point play, as Ricky Rubio stepped on court for the first time this season and immediately collected a steal to feed Bogdanovic for a fast break dunk. Laviña capped a 0-7 run with another basket but Hukic - who else? - sank another triple for a 19-21 Olimpija deficit. Vlado Ilievski tied the game with a jumper but Laviña nailed a triple that hit the rim three times and went in. Vladimir Golubovic dunked it but Bogdanovic answered from downtown while Wright added a layup-plus-foul by Wright gave DKV a 23-30 edge. Joventut was a different team in defense now while Hernandez-Sonseca capped a 0-8 run with a power layup. Ilievski nailed a triple but free throws by Wright and Hernandez-Sonseca made it a double-digit game, 26-36. Robinson took over with a three-point play while Hernandez-Sonseca and Miha Zupan traded jumpers to fix the halftime score at 31-38.

Henk Norel provided a highlight with an alleyoop dunk right after the break while Bogdanovic added a tip-in to give Joventut a 31-42 margin right after the break. Ribas took over with a running jumper and even when Olimpija called timeout, a three-pointer by Jasaitis capped a 0-9 run and made it a 13-point game, 31-44. Robinson tried to change things with a power layup but Ribas grabbed a rebound, raced downcourt and nailed a running triple. Robinson kept pacing Olimpija with another basket that Laviña erased with a fast break layup. Olimpija had lost control in offense while a put-back layup by Hernandez-Sonseca made it a 19-point game, 35-54. Hukic stepped up with a layup and Robinson added a free throw to give Olimpija some hope at 40-54. Franch took over with a reverse layup that Robinson erased with an outstanding dunk. Jan Jagla shined with a put-back layup but Hukic answered from downtown. Free throws by Wright and Jagla helped Joventut to get a 45-62 margin after three quarters.

Olimpija needed to improve its shooting selections to try an early comeback but Wright silenced the crowd with a bomb from downtown. Bogdanovic soon added a jumper to make a 21-point game, 46-67, enough to seal the outcome with 8 minutes remaining. Olimpija kept trying, however, but everything went wrong for the hosts now. Laviña buried a triple, making Olimpija call timeour at 46-70. Hernandez-Sonseca shined with an aleyoop layup, as Olimpija tried to get Robinson involved without much success. Norel had a big block that allowed Bogdanovic to dunk it in the other end, good for a 49-76 margin. Joventut opted to sit out its players on the final minutes, allowing Olimpija to rally once the outcome was clear. Joventut left Ljubljana with its first road win this season. Meanwhile, Olimpija will play three of its four remaining games on the road, so a major turnaround is needed to keep its Top 16 chances alive.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"I feel really bad. It's the truth, I am desperate. I never expected such a loss, given that this game for us was the last chance to keep thinking about the Top 16. Now, everything is over. This was the worst game by Union Olimpija since I became the coach. Some players played really badly, and I too made errors. I can only ask forgiveness of the fans. Today, we deserved the whistles from the crowd."
ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"We knew how important this game was for our aspirations to reach the Top 16. This victory in Ljubljana, where it is very difficult to play and win, was the only option, and to win we did everything we had to do. We played very well on defense. I don't think the hosts had many weapons against the defense, and for that I am very satisfied. With that kind of defense, we can beat any team."

Players

ROBINSON, FRANK
Union Olimpija
"Very bad. We played horrible. We committed so many turnovers and missed so many easy baskets, while our opponents made everything they shot. There's no doubt they deserved the victory."
BOGDANOVIC, LUKA
DKV Joventut
"We are playing really well at the moment. Last week, we beat Tau Ceramica and now we have achieved our first road win. This game was crucial for us to keep thinking about the Top 16. Our defense was phenomenal, and on offense we played together. We have to keep playing in this way."
