Montepaschi Siena had a strong start to the Torneo Citta di Roma, as it beat CSKA Moscow by 81-55 on Monday in Group B. Siena’s charge was led by guard Giovani Severini’s 15 points and 7 rebounds and Camillo Bianchi and Cristiano Spina’s 12 points each, plus 10 apiece by Gaetano Spera and Mattia Udom. For CSKA, who was outrebounded 31-18, Alexandr Gudumak totaled 20 points and 6 rebounds, Dmitry Utolin scored 12 and Viacheslav Fedorchenko added 11. Montepaschi Siena started off with an 8-3 lead in the first quarter, but saw CSKA Moscow storm back to finish the period in front, 19-20, before Siena scored the second quarter’s first basket and kept in the driver’s seat for most of the half, entering the break at a 37-35 advantage, thanks to winning the rebounding battle, 17-11. With Gudumak and Fedorchenko accounting for 24 of CSKA’s 35 first half points, Siena keyed defensively on both after the break and only allowed 7 more points from Gudumak, as they rolled to 19 unanswered points and a 27-9 third quarter that was definitive, entering the fourth with a 64-44 advantage. CSKA never got back in the game and paid the price of hitting just 11 of 21 foul shots throughout the game.
