A huge second half performance by Fenerbache-Ulker, that produced a 25-3 run to take over the game, was enough to beat Maccabi Teddy Tel Aviv and cap Day 1 of the Citta di Roma Tournament as FB-Ulker remains in the race to protect its title following a 65-59 victory on Tuesday night in Rome, Italy. With this win FB-Ulker, that won the tournament last year, jumped to a 2-0 record sharing the top stop in Group A with Virtus Siena. Tomorrow the two teams will go head-to-head on the group's first place that leads to the tournament's title game. Maccabi fell to 0-2, sharing the third spot with Acea Virtus Roma and tomorrow the two teams will meet in seek for a debut win. Umar Atin led the winners with 18 points and Mehmet Alemdaroglu added 15. Maccabi saw Omri Shelef and Idan Zalmanson score 14 points each. Maccabi was on top of the game in the first quarter limiting its opponent to just eight points in the first quarter on the way to a 16-8 lead. FB-Ulker continued to struggle making points and saw Maccabi take a 23-10 gap on the way to a 34-24 score at the end of the first half. The third quarter was FB-Ulker's turn to step up on defense and holding Maccabi on just three points for the closing seven minutes of the third quarter, enough to cut the margin to just 42-41 before the last 10 minutes. With the momentum now on the Turkish side the run continued and stopped only after a total run of 25-3, enough to put FB-Ulker in the safe zone.
