Lietuvos Rytas beat Benetton Bwin, 87-53, on Tuesday in the Torneo Citta di Roma, to improve to 2-1 and clinch second place in Group A. After narrowly losing to Fenerbahce on Monday in their second match, Rytas came back to beat third placed Benetton and will play Group B’s second seed on Wednesday. The winners were paced by guard Mantas Mockevicius’ 20 points and Tomas Lekunas’ 12, while Osvaldas Olisevicius and Arturas Gudaitis added 10 each, plus 6 and 9 rebounds, respectively. Benetton finishes 1-2 but will keep third place and will play the third seed in Group B on Wednesday. The Italian squad was led by Raphael Gaspardo’s 19 points and 6 rebounds and Armin Mazic’s 13 points. Lietuvos Rytas jumped to a 21-13 first quarter by attacking the basket and built a 7-0 run early in the second quarter and a 8-0 run near the end, to enter halftime with a solid 45-26 lead. Benetton showed good effort on defense, forcing up to 24 turnovers by Rytas, but the winners flexed their muscle on the boards, as they came up with 49 rebounds against Benetton’s 15 and added another 21-3 to start the fourth quarter that definitely left the Italian side in the dust.
