Lottomatica Roma beat Fenerbahce Ulker, 61-65, on Tuesday in the Torneo Citta di Roma, for their first and only win in the group stage. Fenerbahce Ulker had already clinched Group A after beating Benetton Bwin and Lietuvos Rytas on Monday, while Lottomatica Roma could not improve from their last spot, having lost to both. The winners were paced by Nicola Lucibello’s 20 points and Alessandro Guagliardi’s 17, while Daniele Tomasello corralled 9 rebounds and had 2 blocks. For Fenerbahce, James Birsen totaled 16 points and 8 rebounds, Kerem Hotic scored 14, hitting his 3 attempts from beyond the arc, and Nuri Gul Guney added 10 points and 7 boards. Fenerbahce had a strong start to the game with a 14-2 run behind Hotic’s 7 first quarter points, but Roma was able to hang in there thanks to Lucibello’s 8 with 2 three pointers and ended the period down only 20-15. The second quarter was a defensive showdown edged by Roma, 13-15, and the half was reached at 33-30 before both teams split the third quarter 17-17, entering the final period with a 50-47 advantage for Fenerbahce. With the Turk side powering the middle and netting 17 field goals in the paint, Lottomatica tried to counter from outside, hitting 9 of 29 three point shot attempts. Entering the final 2 minutes with a 59-53 lead after a James Birsen layup, Guagliardi answered with a triple for Roma and Matteo Tambone hit a couple of free throws before Riccardo Ferrarese swished another three to put Roma in the driver’s seat, 59-61, with few ticks left. Guagliardi and Tomasello then converted a couple of free throws, capping a 0-10 run by the Italian side, and Ayberk Guleryuz scored Fenerbahce’s last bucket with just enough time for Lucibello to seal the comeback from the line.
