THE TAKE

PGE Turow desperately needs a victory at home over BC Red Star in the Eurocup Group F to stay alive for the Last 16. Head coach Saso Filipovski's Turow suffered its second straight big loss, 97-69 at Red Star to drop to 1-2. The Polish club had lost the previous game by 25 points. Against Red Star, Filipovski's young side was dominated in all aspects. Turow was out-shot 43%-62%, outrebounded 33-21 and gave up 17 turnovers to 13 for Red Star. One of the few bright spots for Filipovski was forward Damir Miljkovic with 28 points including 6 three-pointers. Forward Alex Harris had 15 points, guard Bryan Bailey scored 13 and forward Chris Daniels chipped in 8 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. But the rest of the team scored just 5 points. Guard Donald Copeland came into the game averaging 19.5 points, but went scoreless as did starters forward Krzysztof Roszyk and center John Turek. If Filipovski cannot refocus and motivate his team to fight for its life at home, Turow may end up just playing out the remainder of the Eurocup for protocol. Red Star meanwhile can book its spot in the Last 16 with a victory combined with a Spirou win at Brose Baskets. Head coach Svetislav Pesic cannot be very disappointed at all in his side. Besides shooting a blistering 62% from the field, Red Star also made 21 of 25 (84%) from the free throw line. Plus, the defense held Turow to just 43% from the field. Pesic also got plenty of balance from his team, with five players scoring in double figures, led by forward Lawrence Roberts and center Elmedin Kikanovic both with 17 points. Tadija Dragicevic had 16 points while forward Vladimir Stimac and guard Marko Marinovic both chipped in 10 points. Three others scored at least 6 points. Pesic will likely tell his troops to expect an entirely different game at Turow. But if Red Star can repeat its intensity, it should be looking at a 3-1 record.

Marko Keselj - Red StarRed Star cruised into the Last 16 by beating PGE Turow 76-86 on Tuesday evening. The visitors shot 9 for 17 from downtown and outrebounded Turow 19-32 in improving to 3-1. Red Star will host undefeated Group F leader Spirou Charleroi after the winter break looking for a chance to move into first place in the group. After a first half that saw the momentums wing several times as both teams took promising early leads, Red Star found its shooting touch in the third quarter as Lawrence Roberts, Vladimir Stimac and then Roberts again connected on back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to help built a 15-point advantage that would prove to be more than enough. Turow challenged and managed to cut the lead to 7 in the final period, however red Star responded from downtown to secure the win. Marko Keselj matched a career-high with 20 points to lead Red Star and Roberts added 16 points and 8 boards. That duo was a combined 6 for 7 from downtown. Nemanja Bjelica added 12 points and Vladimir Stimac had 11 for the winners. Bryan Bailey paced Turow with 15, Dragisa Drobnjak added 13 in his first appearance of the season for Turow and Robert Witka added 11 in defeat.

John Turek opened the scoring inside for the hosts before Roberts got Red Star on the scoreboard. Andre Owens teamed with Roberts to make it 5-10 but Chris Daniels led the hosts back with a pair of baskets on a 9-0 run as Turow too the lead. Red Star responded with 7 straight points of its own before the game momentum settled down. Turo tied the game at 18-18, but Stimac gave the visitors a 20-22 lead after 10 minutes. The two sides traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second period until Iwo Kitzinger caught fire with a triple and a pair of free throws to make it 29-26. However Red Star stayed strong and soon tied the game from the line. Boris Bakic committed a foul and then a technical, allowing Bailey to make a pair of free throws, but Bakic then drew an offensive foul from Drobnjak to get the ball back and Keselj sliced inside for a pair of baskets as Red Star regained the lead. Bailey pulled up from behind the arc to make it 34-33. After 2 Bjelica free throws, Damir Miljkovic fed Turek for a powerful two-handed slam that ignited the crowd shortly before the break and allowed the hosts to take a 36-35 lead into the locker room.

Red Star came out for the second half playing inspired basketball. Bakic started things off with a three and then his steal led to an Elmedin Kikanovic layup. Owens added a three-point play before Krzysztof Roszyk answered for the hosts. But Red Star blew the game open when Roberts, Stimac and then Roberts again connected on back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to give Red Star a 12-point lead. Robert Witka corrected a Roszyk airball, but the hosts had lost their momentum and Keselj soon pumped the Red Star lead to 46-61 on a Keselj triple. Miljkovic, Drobnjak and Alex Harris all hit from the line to narrow the gap to 56-64 at the end of the third period. The three-point shot continued to serve Red Star in the fourth quarter as Keselj and Roberts buried from downtown to restore a 12-point lead. Stimac added free throws to make it 58-72 and take the bite out of the hosts. Kitzinger tried to ignite a comeback when he hit from behind the arc and Drobnjak cut it to 69-76 with a basket-plus foul, but Keselj answered with a jumper and Bjelica added 5 more points to essentially secure the win. Turow continued to pursuer points until the end, but the outcome was no longer in doubt as Red Star ran out the final minutes.

Head Coaches

FILIPOVSKI, SASO
PGE Turow
"First of all, I have to congratulate Red Star for this win. They played very well and very fast. We couldn’t stop their fast breaks, and their shooters scored most of their points tonight. I think that we didn’t have enough experience to beat them tonight. I am happy with the first half we had. We played the way we should have done it all game long."
PESIC, SVETISLAV
Crvena Zvezda
"I have to congratulate my players, they did a great job today. We had sopme rebounding problems a week ago, but I think we did it better tonight. I am very proud of my players. They played the way I expected. I also want to congratulate Turow and its players. Turow has very good players, is knows for its aggressive defense and they showed it tonight."
