THE TAKE

Maccabi Electra looks to ride the momentum after last week’s win when it hosts Le Mans Sarthe Basket and former player David Bluthenthal on Thursday at Tel Aviv’s Nokia Arena. Maccabi topped Air Avellino 90-83 last week behind a masterful performance by Carlos Arroyo and strong support by Lior Eliyahu and Marcus Brown. Arroyo scored 20 and dished 8 assists, while Eliyahu scored 15 on perfect shooting and Brown added 15 in just 17 minutes. Meanwhile Le Mans lost at home by 4 points to Cibona – its second narrow loss in as many weeks. Despite the losses, there is plenty of optimism in the Le Mans camp. The squad is still coming together and has four excellent scoring weapons. Two of them – Bluthenthal and Dewarick Spencer – were among the most successful three-point shooters in the Euroleague last season, but are a combined 4 for 21 this season. When their shots start falling, it will create more options for playmaker Brian Chase and big man J.P. Batista as well. Chase will have a tough time matching moves with Arroyo if the Maccabi point guard can duplicate last week’s performance. That point guard battle could be the most important of the contest. The hosts are quite deep at the wings, where Brown, Tal Burstein, Tre Simmons, Jason Williams and Omri Casspi are among the options head coach Efy Birenboim has to choose from to combat Spencer, Bluthenthal and Antoine Diot. In the paint, Le Mans has some gritty and athletic players in Pape Badiane and Alain Koffi as well as J.P. Batista to tackle Eliyahu, D’Or Fischer and Esteban Batista. Le Mans head coach J.D. Jackson has all the pieces to challenge Maccabi in an uptempo game and can lean on Bluthenthal to prepare his teammates for the electric atmosphere in Tel Aviv. Furthermore, as a key player on the Maccabi team that reach last season’s Euroleague title game, Bluthenthal can help Le Mans plan to stop some of Maccabi’s important weapons, like Eliyahu, Burstein and Casspi. Nevertheless, Maccabi remains the favorite at home, especially in a week where its domestic game was postponed and the team had extra time to prepare for Le Mans. The key matchup should be at the point, where Chase will have to slow Arroyo down to hinder the Maccabi attack and give Le Mans a shot at what would be only the clubs second road win in two years.

GAME QUOTES

Maccabi Electra
  • Swingman Tal Burstein enters his team’s Week 2 game needing only 4 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career. He is also just 7 assists shy of 250 for his career. He would be the 25th player to reach that mark.
  • Maccabi swept Le Mans in two regular season games last season – the only two meetings ever between the clubs. Ironically, Maccabi’s leading scorer in those games is now with the opposition. Forward David Bluthenthal averaged 16 points for Maccabi.
  • Guard Marcus Brown is a two-time French League champion. He won the 1998 crown with Pau-Orthez and in 2000 with Limoges. Not a single player on the current Le Mans roster was a professional when Brown played in France.
  • Maccabi’s deep rotation has nine players averaging at least 10 minutes of action per game. That depth has also allowed head coach Efy Birenboim’s side to commit the second most fouls in the Euroleague so far this season, 23.5 per game.
Le Mans
  • Forward David Bluthenthal spent three seasons and won the 2004 Euroleague title with Maccabi. He played for Maccabi last season, helping the club reach the Euroleague title game. Bluthenthal scored 385 points in 56 career Euroleague games with Maccabi, which ranks him 37th all-time on the club’s European scoring charts.
  • The only double-figure rebounding effort of Alain Koffi’s career came at Nokia Arena. Koffi had 8 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots for Le Mans in a 74-71 loss last October.
  • Big man J.P. Batista made his Euroleague debut against Maccabi Tel Aviv with Lietuvos Rytas last November. He came off the bench for 2 points and 4 rebounds in 10 minutes of an 18-point L. Rytas win.
  • J.P. Batista has played faced Maccabi center Esteban Batista a number of times of the years in national teams competitions in the Americas. J.P. and Brazil defeated Esteban and Uruguay in the 2007 Pan-American Games final. Maccabi guard Carlos Arroyo led Puerto Rico past Brazil in the 2007 Fiba Americas bronze medal game later that summer.

Quotes Head Coaches

BIRENBOIM, EFY
Maccabi Electra
"Le Mans is a very dangerous team, and this game won't be easy for us. We need to watch out for their athletic players, that allow them to play aggressive defense and go strong on the offensive board. We also need to keep an eye on David Bluthenthal that knows the rims here very well. We also know him so we'll try to use this knowledge to limit his game. It's very important to pick up good momentum and gain confidence, and a second win in a row will do that. We hope to be able to provide our fans with that."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"Having lost at home to Cibona last week, we are now in a situation where we must win a road game to stay in the race. It is difficult to win in Tel Aviv and Maccabi is certainly the favorite in this matchup, but we will do everything we can to stay in the game and if the occasion to win presents itself, we'll be ready."

Players

BURSTEIN, TAL
Maccabi Electra
"We got our first win last week so we want to keep the good momentum and arrive next week to the tough game in Greece with two wins in our pocket. It will be funny to play against David, but we already played against Nikola, Yotam and Sarunas in the pre-season so slowly we get used to it. It's professional basketball. Le Mans gave us a tough battle last season so we know not to under-estimate them. They almost won in Malaga in the first week and that's another example why we need to fight for 40 minutes. It's the Euroleague. Any game can turn out difficult, even at home. I hope the fans, as always, will push us and help us get this important win."
BLU, DAVID
Le Mans
"After our two first games in the Euroleague, we feel good physically and mentally. I’ve got a lot of confidence in our team to deal with where we are and the will to continue to improve. Personally, I feel excited to go back to this beautiful city, one of my favorite in all the world. It will be interesting to play in Nokia Arena as a visiting player. I’m looking forward to the excitement and it’s a pleasure to go back to the great organization of Maccabi."
Carlos Arroyo - Maccabi ElectraCarlos Arroyo hit a jumper with 1.1 seconds left in overtime to give Maccabi Elecrtra an 82-80 victory at home, surviving a tough effort by Le Mans Sarthe Basket. Maccabi Tel Aviv improved to 2-1 in Group A, while Le Mans remained winless at 0-3. Arroyo had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and D’Or Fischer collected 20 points and 7 rebounds to lead the hosts. Veteran Marcus Brown was also instrumental with 9 points – including a crucial three-pointer that forced the extra session. Le Mans’s David Bluthenthal led all scorers with 23 points including 5 three-pointers against his former team. Brian Chase had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a losing effort, while Antoine Diot added 11 points, Alain Koffi posted 10 points and 8 rebounds J.P. Batista netted 10 points as Le Mans tried for the upset attempt.

Blutenthal opened the scoring for the guests and his three-point play made it 3-7 in the early going. Diot knocked down back-to-back three-pointers and after another Maccabi turnover, Bluthenthal nailed a triple as Le Mans led 7-16 midway through the first. But Arroyo scored 7 points as the Israeli basketball giants pulled to within 18-20 before Le Mans led 18-24 after one period.

Yavin Green hit the first 3 points of the second quarter only to see consecutive baskets by Koffi make it 21-28. But Maccabi worked extremely hard defensively and Fischer did just enough on the offensive side of the court with two more baskets to leave Maccabi trailing just 30-31 at the break after allowing just 7 Le Mans points in the second quarter.

David Bluthenthal - Le Mans Fischer continued his strong game with 6 straight points in guiding Maccabi to a 10-5 run to start the second half for a 40-36 lead. Lior Eliyahu and Omri Casspi both made two baskets in helping Maccabi stay ahead despite three long balls by Bluthenthal. And Arroyo’s score gave Maccabi a 54-53 lead after three periods.

Another Bluthenthal triple to open the fourth pushed the visitors ahead 54-56. But Tre Simmons answered right back with a three of his own. Diot knotted the game at 61-61 with a three-pointer, but Arroyo came right back with a three-point play. Chase knocked down a triple the next time down the court. Chase would then hit jumpers to make it 66-69 and 68-71. And then he drained two foul shots with 15.7 seconds left for a 70-73 advantage. But Brown buried a three-pointer from the left wing with 9.3 seconds remaining to even the game at 73-73 and Chase missed his running jumper in the final seconds.

Koffi opened the overtime session with a score, but failed to convert a three-point play. After Brown hit a layup to even the game, Bluthenthal’s jumperpbut the guests ahead 75-77. Fischer’s dunk and Tal Burnstein’s breakaway layup gave Maccabi 79-77 lead. Dewarick Spencer answered with a three-pointer with 47 seconds to go before Arroyo made just one of two foul shots with 34 seconds to even the game. Maleye Ndoye missed a jumper with 11 seconds to give a chance to Arroyo, who hit a jumper from the foul line extended with 1.1 seconds left. And then Spencer’s three-point winning attempt drew iron, but did not go in.

Head Coaches

BIRENBOIM, EFY
Maccabi Electra
"We showed a lot of character. Twice in a row we scored the last possession we had. It shows we have a lot of character. The game took a different direction than expected. We had players who played well on offense, but we had a problem with Bluthenthal on the other side. I'm happy with the win, because it's the second in a row and we need to have continuity."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"I told my players to wait a few seconds before making a foul in the last play of regulation, but Marcus moved quick and we lost him. I don't know what happened, but it's my responsibility. It's the third time in a row we've lost a close game, and it's not easy. We'll have to stay optimistic and try to win the next game."

Players

ARROYO, CARLOS
Maccabi Electra
"We tried to attack the basket and score as many points as possible down the stretch. That's basketball. It doesn't always go the way you want. I think there are some things we do better now, and we make progress to where we want to be. Everybody contributed to this win."
BROWN, MARCUS
Maccabi Electra
"I had a chance to take a shot and I made it. I took such shots in the past. We had a chance and we took advantage of it. We still need to get better. They are a very athletic team so it wasn't easy. When we take more rebounds, we'll play better."
CHASE, BRIAN
Le Mans
"It's the third time this happened to us. I don't know if we’r miss something. We just need to execute better down the stretch. I didn't have a good shooting day in the first three quarters, but in the last quarter I felt better. I love these moments, when the game is close and everything is on the line. I played in Turkey last season and the atmosphere there is great, but in the Euroleague it's even better. I play with the best players in Europe, and I love every second of it."
