THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket will continue its search for its first win of the season on Thursday when it hosts Unicaja in Group B. Le Mans has suffered from inexperience and hard luck thus far this season, losing all of its games by narrow margins. Last week the club blew a double-digit lead heading into the fourth quarter to lose at Efes Pilsen 66-63 – the third time it has lost by 3 points in four games. Despite the loss, Luka Bogdanovic shined with 5 three-pointers, giving the team a strong outside scoring option next to Sam Clancy in the paint. Meanwhile Unicaja destroyed Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv 93-70 for its third straight win. Carlos Cabezas led the way with 21 points. The game pits the second-highest scoring team in the league, Unicaja at 88 points per game, against the second second lowest, Le Mans at 69 points per game. Unicaja is also among the leaders in two- and three-point shooting, rebounds, assists and fouls drawn. Power forward Marcus Haislip is the team's top scorer, though there are five Unicaja players averaging double figures in points and three shooting at least 50% from downtown. Le Mans leads the league in assists and reserve guard Raviv Limonad is fifth in the league in that category. Uncicaja's depth could force this game into being more about Le Mans's depth than about its first team. The visitors arrive with a never-ending frontline led by Daniel Santiago, Boniface N'Dong, Haislip, Carlos Jimenez and German Gabriel – the first two standing at 2.16 and 2.13 meters and – to attack the Le Mans interior corps of Alain Koffi, Clancy and Phil Ricci – with no player taller than 2.05 meters. Accordingly, Le Mans will try to force the action to the perimeter, where it boasts depth with Yannick Bokolo and Limonad at point and Nicolas Batum, Bogdanovic and Nebojsa Bogavac on the wings. Unicaja counters with guards Carlos Cabezas, Davor Kus and Bojan Popovic and swingmen Jiri Welsch and Berni Rodriguez. Size could play a big issue in the game, with Le Mans needing Koffi to stand tall on defense and for Clancy to use his mass to make room inside on offense. The hosts have all the motivation needed as they attempt to win for the first time before its too late to mount a challenge for a spot in the Top 16, while Unicaja seeks a road win to remain in the hunt for the group lead. The incentives should make this game an exciting one, even though only one team will walk away happy.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"If we don’t win this one, it’s almost over for top 16. The importance of this game is obvious. Unicaja is really good and comfortable in the Euroleague, but has a lot of trouble in its own national championship. They have the second-best attack in the whole Euroleague, one of the best defenses and gets an index average of 100 against 58 for their opponents. That's impressive! We are waiting for a high-intensity, tough game against a team that loves to run and provoke a lot of fouls. We absolutely have to control their drives to the basket."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We have a lot of respect for the team of Le Mans, simply because despite their having lost four games, in each of them they had a tie situation in the last minute and have just lacked luck until now. We are award that in order to win away from home in the Euroleague and in a tough court like that of Le Mans, we have to be focused, humble and very intense when we play."

Players

BOKOLO, YANNICK
Le Mans
"It would be so important for us to win our first game, whether it be Unicaja or another team, it's the same. We need a victory. We showed some good basketball for the moment, but we are really frustrated by the way we played at the end of each game. I hope we have already learned from it. I think it will be tough physically because Unicaj won't come for anything other than than the win here. They have beaten Maccabi by 23 points, which means something for sure. Anyway, we are ready to fight for a win!"
KUS, DAVOR
Unicaja
"The game against Le Mans is going to be tough, like all that we play in the Euroleague. I think that these days it is very difficult to pull off a victory as visitors in this competition, so it's a challenge for us to achieve that, even moreso considering our last Spanish League road game didn't go well. What's more, Le Mans has a very good team despite being last in our group. If not for some details in their previous games, they could have a win already. We can't let down our guard at any moment, because if we do, we'll be making it easier on the other team, and that's something we can't allow."
Bojan Popovic - Unicaja Unicaja put its name among the Group B leaders by surging at the finish to a 74-83 road win over Le Mans Sarthe Basket in France on Thursday. Unicaja's second road victory boosted its record to 4-1, giving it a first-place tie with Lietuvos Rytas. Le Mans fell to 0-5 and now finds itself alone in the group's last place. Unicaja lost all of a 14-point halftime lead while scoring only 6 points in 12 minutes after the break, but recovered and applied its own stellar defense down the stretch to take the win. Big men Daniel Santiago and German Gabriel paced Unicaja on offense with 14 points each. Bojan Popovic came of the bench for 13 points, including key three-pointers late, while Berni Rodriguez added 11 points. Le Mans was led in scoring by substitute Nebojsa Bogavac, with 18 points. Yannick Bokolo added 14 points, 7 assists and 5 steals, while Nicolas Batum scored 12 and Same Clancy 11.

Gabriel did what he does best, tossing in a three-pointer for Unica to start the game, but Bogdanovic matched him at the other end. Batum, Clancy and Bokolo sewed together successive baskets to keep Le Mans a step ahead at 9-7, but that's when Unicaja busted out. The visitors went inside to Santiago for three baskets, while Cabezas rained a triple and Rodriguez dropped free throws for an 0-11 run to a 9-18 lead. Le Mans used a timeout to bolster its defense, while Clancy, Bogdanovic and Nebojsa Bogavac got the hosts back to 15-18. Unicaja needed the timeout now, after which Gabriel returned to the three-point arc and Rodriguez raced for a layup. Raviv Limonad answerd teh triple, but Boniface Ndong and Cabezas scored in the final minute to keep Unicaja in charge at 20-27 after a quarter.

Yannick Bokolo - Le MansBogavac and Phil Ricci rifled Le Mans into the game with back-to-back triples to start the second quarter. Gabriel was there to answer the second, however, and when Popovic and Ndong scored the next 4 points, Unicaja was safe again at 26-34. Bokolo's layup and Alain Koffi's dunk helped Le Mans, but the Unicaja response was greater, with 4 three-pointers in the span of a couple minutes - by Jiri Welsch, Davor Kus and Popovic twice - as the difference ballooned to 34-48. Batum scored 5 points in a row for Le Mans, but a half-court pass by Popovic to Carlos Jimenez and 4 late points by Kus helped Unicaja cruise into halftime ahead by a comfortable 41-54 margin.

Le Mans got back in the game with defense after halftime, holding Unicaja to 3 points in 5 minutes while Clancy and Bokolo's two-pointers set up a big triple by Bogavac that cut the difference in halft, to 51-58. And Le Mans was not done. Within a couple minutes, Bokolo and Bogavac were firing in successive bombs from the arc to pull the hosts within 59-60. That's where the score stuck as the Le Mans defense finished allowed just a single basket by Rodriguez over the final 6 minutes and holding Unicaja to 6 points over the whole 10 to finish the third quarter within a point of the lead.

Alain Koffi and German Gabriel - Le Mans - UnicajaRicci did the honor of completing the Le Mans comeback with the go-head basket on the final quarter's first shot, then Bokolo added a two-pointer to give the hosts a 63-60 lead. Unicaja went to its go-to big man, Santiago, to end its spell, and he did so with 2 inside baskets before Popovic tied it up 66-66 at the foul line. Bokolo and Gabriel kept the teams even from two-point distance, and then Batum and Popovic did the same with dueling triples from the arc. The key play came next, with Rodriguez swiping a steal and heading downcourt to feed Gabriel out top for the triple that gave Unicaja a 71-74 lead with under 4 minutes left. The visitors did not trail again, because even while Clancy hit 1 of 2 free throws, Santiago answered by banking in a hook shot. After a Le Mans timeout, Unicaja swarmed to stop Bogdanovic's triple try while at the other end, Rodriguez waltzed to the rim for an easy layup. As the Le Mans defense had done earlier, now Unicaja's ruled, creating havoc for the hosts while assuring itself a place among the Group B leaders after five weeks.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"We allowed too many points in the first half, we were tired and watched them too much. Thankfully our reaction in the third quarter made the game completely different. That's why we came back and took the lead in the beginning of the fourth quarter. But they stayed calm and found the players to make the big shots.
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We played an excellent first half. We went down in the third quarter when we let Bogavac get into the game. Le Mans came back very strong. I like that after these troubles we kept the right confidence and control to come back in the fourth quarter. I like also our quiet reaction and ability to get back on defense without losing concentration."

Players

BOGDANOVIC, LUKA
Le Mans
"The first 20 minutes we didn't play good like in the last games. In the second half, we started to play much better and we started to live. At the end we took stupid shots and now our chances to be in the Top 16 are probably done."
SANTIAGO, DANIEL
Unicaja
"For us it's a very important victory. It's always tough for us when we play on the road. I'm happy that our team had enough focus to finish strong at the end. This victory helps us to reach the Top 16."
