THE STAKES

In their one previous matchup in the Turin 2009 Final Eight, rytas beat Benetton in the quarterfinals on the way to win the trophy. The Lithuanian side suffered their first defeat of the season last week against Lokomotiv in overtime, and needs the win to be back on track. A Benetton victory here means a foot in the quarterfinals. The two coaches, rytas’s Aleksandar Dzikic and Benetton’s Sasha Djordjevic, come out of the same Serbian basketball school – Partizan Belgrade.

THE TAKE

The matchup between talented Jonas Valanciunas and experienced Marcus Goree is one to watch, and will be decisive for control of the game’s tempo. Benetton normally starts the game with young Andrea De Nicolao at point guard, but they can turn to Massimo Bulleri and Sani Becirovic, who could make the difference. The duel between Renaldas Saibutis, a versatile scorer, and Jobey Thomas, an outstanding streak shooter, is also important.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"After Sunday's defeat it's important to win on Tuesday because we need to stop losing. In January, we have won only two games out of six. If our losses against CSKA and Lokomotiv may be justified, defeats like against ČEZ must be the last. We will fight and try to win at home. The game against Benetton is very important to us. They have some young and energetic Italian players. However, the most important players are experienced Sani Becirovic, Massimo Bulleri, Jobey Thomas and Marcus Goree. We need to stop these players."
DJORDJEVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Benetton Basket
"It's the time to travel again, when we were starting to find the automatisms in the team we will have to play three consecutive road games with two important trips to Lithuania and Russia. We can only clench our fists and move forward but it will not be easy to make the rotations. We will have to play game by game without thinking who is missing in the team due to fatigue. Lietuvos Rytas has a young athletic team and it will be a challenge for us."

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"I am delighted with the energy, passion and support we showed today. That is important for us. Each game for our team is test of mental strength and character. I am glad that in this aspect everything was fine. Aleksandar Rasic started and do not see anything strange about that. Everyone has their own opinion. No one had any impact on my decision. I like my players whether they are in the starting lineup or not."
