THE STAKES

A game between Group J’s two undefeated leaders, one of which – Khimki – did not lose a game in the regular season either. A win here means a foot in the quarterfinals. Both coaches, Khimki’s Rimas Kurtinaitis and Donetsk’s Sasa Obradovic, are great former point guards who will make use of all their court experience to find an edge.

THE TAKE

The standout matchups are at shooting guard between scoring aces Vitaly Fridzon and Ramel Curry, and at point guard, where Zoran Planinic and Vuke Avdalvoic will battle for control of game tempo. Another factor will be Donetsk’s defense on sharp shooter Thomas Kelati, who has buried 33 three-pointers so far with a shooting percentage of 45.5 percent.

Quotes Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
BC Khimki
"BC Donetsk is one of the leaders of the Ukrainian Superleague and Eurocup, the team shows nice basketball. Quite notable that Obradovics squad defeated Asvel on the road, which is not an easy thing to do. Donetsk is a European team with aggressive defense and fast attacks. Kravtsov is a very talented young center, as well as the leaders Curry, Radenovic and Avdalovic. The Ukrainian League is very interesting, its a tough competition and local squads show good results."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"I cant say that Im satisfied with the quality of the game we showed in the last matches. The team now is far from the best shape, having such a tough schedule it is not easy to work, but we keep on going ahead. Now we have another complicated game in Russia that will definitely set a stamp upon physical and mental condition of BC Donetsk players."

"Both Khimki and Donetsk are the leaders of the Eurocup Last 16 Group J and the game between these teams will be a principal one. We expect tough and aggressive defense and prepare for this meeting very seriously. Curry is the leader of Donetsk, he shows good skills and perfect results, Russian fans know him since his participation in VTB United league last year with Azovmash. The fact that our opponent entered the Last 16 says a lot about the strength of Ukrainian basketball."
RADENOVIC, IVAN
BC Donetsk
"BC Khimki is the team with tradition. It is one of the leading clubs in Russia. In the present season they have quite a visible target - to win the Eurocup, which will help them reserve a place in the Euroleague for the next season. They will be the hosting club of the Eurocup Finals, so theres a lot of expectations in the city. Im not saying that theyre invincible and we'll do our best to beat them."
Kresimir Loncar - BC Khimki (photo bckhimki.ru)BC Khimki took control of Group J by downing BC Donetsk 68-55 on Tuesday. Head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis’s side remains undefeated so far for the entire Eurocup campaign. The loss dropped Donetsk to 2-1 record stays and second place in the group. Kresmir Loncar led the way for Khimki with 17 points and 7 rebounds, Vitaly Fridzon nailed 17 with 7 assists, and Zoran Planinic added 16 with 6 boards. Vlacheslav Kravtsov had 17 points and 8 rebounds for Donetsk, Ramel Curry chipped in 11 and Ivan Radenovic had 10 points and 10 boards.

Michael Lee opened the scoring for Donetsk, before Planinic answered down low. Curry went all the way, but Sergey Monya scored an easy layup in the open court Curry was on fire with a three-pointer for a 6-9 edge. Fridzon found easy points after a steal by Monya and Planinic tapped in a Loncar miss to take the lead, 10-9. Khimki increased its defensive pressure and Loncar and Fridzon posted free throws. Dmitriy Khvostov capped an 11-0 run assisted by Matt Nielsen to make it 17-9. Vlacheslav Kravtsov dunked for the guests before Chirs Quinn missed a layup over the buzzer to finish 17-11 after 10 minutes. A left hook of Kravtsov kept Donetsk moving. Quinn answered with a short jumper and Nielsen finished the pick-and-roll for 21-13. New entry Dmytro Gliebov hit a short jumper, then Ivan Radenovic and Kravtsov connected for a high-low play to finish with a dunk for 23-17. After 2 free throws by Quinn, Donetsk scored 6 unanswered points to get within 25-23 with a perfect inside move from Radenovic. Fridzon’s three pointer against the guests 1-2-2 zone stopped Khimki’s offensive difficulties, but Vule Avdalovic nailed a rainbow shot in the paint and Gliebov finished with a layup to make it 28-27. Loncar completed a three-point-play copied by Radenovic for a 31-32 advantage. Planinic bagged a shot from downtown, and scored a pair from the foul line to finish 36-32 at halftime.

Fridzon opened the second half with a triple before Monya, Avdalovic and Loncar layups made it 41-34. Planinic’s fadeaway jumper increased the margin. Radenovic scored just one form the foul line before Mickeal Gelabale from long distance gave a double-digit cushion to Khimki, 46-36. Avdalovic finished with a layup coming off a timeout, but Planinic stole a ball from the hands of Curry to complete a three-point-play for 49-38. Radenovic scored 2 from the foul line, and Donetsk aligned again its zone defense, but Gelabale’s easy layup made it 51-40. A huge block by Kravtsov on Loncar and his hook put 51-42 on the scoreboard. Gelabale scored a three which was answered again by Kravtsov in the paint for 54-44 as the third quarter finished. A Lee triple early in the last quarter made it 54-47, then Fridzon after two scoreless minutes answered from three-point land for a 57-47margin. Loncar, assisted by Thomas Kelati, and free throws by Fridzon made it 64-49 - the biggest margin so far - to Khimki with three and a half minutes remaining. An unstoppable Kravtsov under the boards tried to sound the charge for the guests with 4 points, but Fridzon free throw with less than a minute on the game clock sealed the win for the hosts.

Head Coaches

KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
BC Khimki
"First of all I would like to thank all the players that performed today for their efforts and the atmosphere they created at the game. The result is positive because we played in defense very well. We used our power and strength. For me the very first thing is a team game, no matter how many points each player scores. Monya, Nielsen, Planinic and Fridzon did all their best for this success. It was a micro-final for the leadership in our group."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
"Congrats to Khimki, they deserved to win today. We gave good resistance to them. Of course, we had some technical mistakes, turnovers, but I can’t be disappointed. We responded to our opponent, we did our maximum. We will have a return game in Donetsk and I hope my team will shoot a better percentage."

Players

QUINN, CHRIS
BC Khimki
"It was a tough game, Donetsk is a very good team and it made a lot of problems for us. We are happy to score another Eurocup win. I think our energy in the second half was the crucial factor for this victory. Moreover all the guys played very good in defense, offense and in rebounding. We did a great job. Ukrainian basketball is very good and I suppose the return game in Donetsk will be very difficult."
KRAVTSOV, VIACHESLAV
BC Donetsk
"I would like to congratulate Khimki on a deserved victory. It was pleasure for me to play in the Basketball center of Moscow Region. As for our game, we didn’t play like we wanted. I don’t think the reason is only Khimki’s defense – some guys burned out and didn’t show their usual basketball. We should review this game and try to play more focused in attack and make fewer turnovers."
