THE TAKE

Lottomatica Roma looks to remain red-hot when it hosts Fenerbahce Ulker in the Italian capital on Thursday. Head coach Jasmin Repesa’s squad has won its last two home games against a pair of Final Four contenders – reigning Euroleague champion Panathinaikos and Real Madrid – to get back into the race for a ticket to the Top 16. Now at 3-6, Roma is tied for sixth place, but has only one loss fewer than the two teams tied for fourth, one of which is Fener. Meanwhile the Turkish champs have dropped two in a row, but have pleasant memories of their previous meeting with Roma this season. That night, Willie Solomon scored 21 and Mirsad Turkcan posted 13 points and 17 rebounds as Fener coasted to an 85-66 win. Fener will have a slightly different look this time around, as forward Ibrahim Kutuay has left the team and promising center Omer Asik has bolstered the frontline. Head coach Bogdan Tanjevic’s squad is deepest in the frontcourt, while Roma’s is deepest on the perimeter. Allan Ray was the hero against Panathinaikos, but any one of point guard Roko-Leni Ukic, defensive ace David Hawkins or shooter Jon Stefansson could be the star on any given night, just as forward Roberto Gabini proved with a Euroleague career-best 17 against Madrid. Solomon leads the Fener charge with Omer Onan and Damir Kaan. Small forward James “Flight” White adds athleticism for the visitors. Inside, Fener has four players standing 2.10 meters or taller to go alongside Turkcan, who needs just 6 rebounds to become the first player to 1,000 rebounds in Euroleague Basketball. Erazem Lorbek and Grego Fucka are Roma’s main options in the paint, with Gabini often battling bigger guys at power forward. Roma’s team spirit has defied all expectations this season and its super home form makes it the favorite this week. However Tanjevic does have some areas he can try to exploit, particularly on the glass, where Roma is among the league’s weaker teams. This game between two talented teams could wind up going either way, supplying plenty of high-quality Euroleague Basketball action along the way.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"The game with Fenerbahce Ulker is very important for us. If we want to be part of the Top 16 we must face every game with high intensity and stay focused for the whole 40 minutes. We must play as we did with Panathinaikos and Real Madrid. We have problems with injuries and it won't be easy but I hope my player will have the right mentality."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Lottomatica Roma is a very tough opponent. They beat La Fortezza Bologna by 21 points. They play really very nice basketball. They are better than the game we played in Istanbul. We have to produce more quality basketball than the first game we played in Istanbul, especially in transition defense. We had ups and downs in the game we played against Turk Telekom at the weekend. We conceded 41 points just in the last quarter and this is what we sit down and think about. It’s not a part of the type of the basketball we play. My goal now is to play much tougher defense."

Players

LORBEK, ERAZEM
Lottomatica Roma
"We have a very important game ahead of us. We know it will be a difficult game. They are one of the strongest teams of our group. We must be careful in every part of the court and be aware of their shooters. Solomon is a great player, he can make the difference and we must try to stop him."
ASIK, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It’s really a very nice feeling to be a part of a team like Fenerbahce Ulker. I’m curious to have another Euroleague experience and will try to give everything I have on the court. We knew that Lottomatica Roma is better than before and we have some injury doubts and absences. But we still feel that we have the power to overcome of those handicaps. Our first and only aim is to win the game, that’s all."
Mirsad Turkcan - Fenerbahce Ulker Fenerbahce Ulker picked up a crucial road win by topping Lottoatica Roma 63-84 in the Italian capital on Thursday night. Fenerbahce won for third time away from home this season and improved to 5-5 in Group C, good for fourth place. Meanwhile Roma, which topped Panathinaikos and Real Madrid in its last two home games, dropped to 3-7. Willie Solomon paced the Turkish champs with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, while Mirsad Turkcan added 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. His sixth board of the game, early in the third period, saw Turkcan become the first player to reach 1,000 rebounds in Euroleague Basketball history. The game was close in the early going and into the second period. However Fener went on a 2-23 tear leading into halftime and the third period to take control for good. Fener center Oguz Savas, sporting a full beard, scored 15 in his first start of the season and Omer Onan added 14. Gregor Fucka led Roma with 15 points and 9 rebounds, David Hawkins added 13 points, Erazem Lorbek had 12 points and 9 boards and Roberto Gabini scored 10.

Roma won the opening tip and soon went ahead on a Hawkins basket. The hosts led 6-0 after Lorbek scored inside before Rasim Basak drew a foul from Gabini while shooting a three and sank the resulting free throws for his team’s first points. Allan Ray came right back with a triple, but Savas made sure that Roma couldn’t get away. Roko-Leni Ukic put the hosts on top 15-10, however back-to-back threes by Damir Kaan and Turkcan gave Fener its first lead of the night. Lorbek swayed the advantage back to the hosts once more only for an Emir Preldzic bucket to put Fener ahead 18-19 after 10 minutes.

Erazem Lorbek - Lottomatica RomaThe lead changed hands again as Fucka opened the second period with a basket in the paint, which was erased by Turkcan. Fucka and Onan again traded baskets as the lead went from side to side. The game was tight with Fucka carrying the home team before a Gabini triple made it 30-26. However Fener reeled off the next 12 points as part of a 2-16 charge to take control for good. The charge began with an Onan three, continued with Omer Asik and then Savas and Solomon as the visitors built a 32-42 halftime lead.

Fener continued its dominance as Solomon’s next triple capped a 0-7 spurt that was part of an overall larger 2-23 run. During this time Turkcan grabbed his history-making rebound. Ukic and then Hawkins from the line showed the Roma spirit and got the hosts within 40-49. Solomon tried to dash their spirit as his triple restored a double-digit lead. Ukic’s next basket was equaled via Savas’s free throws and more points from the charity stripe through Turkan and Solomon kept Fener ahead 44-59.

Savas made it a 17-point lead early in the fourth quarter as Roma’s hopes of another big home win flitted away. A big three-pointer by Gabini and another from Lorbek allowed the hosts to think about getting back, but Fener hung in and the lead was never in doubt after that. An Onan three and a Solomon basket helped seal the big road win.

Lottomatica Roma
"The boys tried, but we know that we played badly. Fenerbahce is stronger than us and is one of the strongest European teams regarding young talents. I've said that that the roster is short, we are hit by injuries, but I do not want to seek excuses."
