THE TAKE

In Week 3, PGE Turow has the extra tough task getting its first win of the regular season on the home court of the undefeated Panellinios BC. The hosts know that a victory will maintain them in first place in Group G and put them well on their way to qualifying for the elimination rounds. The challenge for Turow could not be more difficult. Panellinios is one of the most complete teams in the competition. Not only does it have one of the top scorers in Devin Smith, but it also has an incredibly long bench. Ten players on Panellinios get 12 minutes or more of court time. Turow, however, has a couple of things going for it - no lack of motivation and its star Michael Wright. The visitors are well aware that if they go down yet again they will have an almost impossible path ahead of them to continue in this year’s Eurocup. Wright is fifth in the Eurocup in scoring with 25.5 points an outing, but the big man will be put to the test this week. Facing him will be starting center Djuro Ostojic, who will soften him up for sub Ian Vougioukas. Panellinios’s second big man is having a monster season so far and ranked third in blocked shots. All eyes will be on Wright this week to see if he can do his usual damage with a player like Vougioukas in his way. The other key question for Turow is who, if anyone, will be able to slow down Smith. Forwards Robert Witka, Konrad Wysocki and Krzysztof Roszyk could all get their shot at defending the deadly scorer. Turow will try to balance out Smith’s scoring through guard Willie Dean. On the other side, guards Rod Blakney and Kostas Charalampidis have been strong thus far for Panellinios. A key indicator to watch in this game will be the rebounds. Panellinios is destroying opponents on the boards collecting a league-best 40.5 per game, while Turow pulls in a decent 34. If Panellinios has another dominating performance on the glass, the score could very easily follow suit.

Quotes Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios Opap
"PGE Turow is a very good team and it won't be an easy opponent for us. We have seen many of their games and know their players, but they just changed their coach and that makes it more difficult for us to scout them. This game is very important to keep our winning streak going. Turow has struggled so far and failed to get a win. This will be their last chance to rejoin the race to reach the next round. We want to play good defense and stay focused."
URLEP, ANDREJ
PGE Turow
"We play against the leader in our group. This will be a hard game, especially since we play in Athens. We got there after losing a Polish League game in Wloclawek. I have been with the team for three days only as its new coach. We need time to speak the same language on the court but even with that, we will fight and try to beat Panellinios in Athens."

Players

XANTHOPOULOS, VASILIS

"We had a very good start in our regular season group and want to take another step forwards to be able to decide what to do next. It won't be an easy game, however, as Turow is a good team. Turow faces a last chance because if they can keep options to qualify if they beat us. We know we have a good team but have to prove that on the court."
WITKA, ROBERT
PGE Turow
"It is a hard time for us, especially since we lost our last game. It will be hard to beat Panellinios. We have a new coach and and started to practice together. We can beat Panellinios, for sure, but must be focused all game long. We have to play as a team - it is the way that we can challenge them. We are going to fight and try to upset them."
Manolis Papamakarios - Panellinios BC (photo Panellinios)Panellinios BC remained perfect in Group G and handed PGE Turow its third loss in as many games, 83-65 on Tuesday in Athens. Turow will try and earn its first win when it hosts Panellinios next week. Manolis Papamakarios was the hero after coming off the bench to key a 17-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters and put the hosts up 34-15. Turow never fully recovered, partly due to subpar efforts from its biggest stars, Willie Deane and Michael Wright. Papamakarios, who was 4 for 6 from downtown, and Britton Johnsen led the hosts with 16 points apiece. Ian Vougioukas added 14 and Kostas Charalampidis had 12, while Rod Blakney dished 7 assists for the winners. Justin Gray and Konrad Wysocki scored 18 each for Turow in head coach Andrej Urlep’s debut.

Veteran Adam Wojcik, making his first start of the season, opened the scoring for Turow from the free throw line and it wasn’t long before Vougioukas had the home team on the scoreboard. The score remained tight with the teams trading buckets for several minutes before Devin Smith put Panellinios up 11-7. However Georgios Kalaitzis fouled Deane taking a three and after making 3 free throws and a jumper, Turow had taken the lead. Josh Davis out Panellinios back on top, though a Deane triple kept Turow within striking distance. Papamakarios gave Panellinios a 20-15 edge after 10 minutes. Papamakarios drained another triple early in the second quarter as the lead blossomed to double digits. Charalampidis added a basket, Vasilis Xanthopoulos stripped Gray for an easy layup and then Charalampidis sank 2 free throws as Panellinios pulled away. Another Papamakarios three capped a 17-0 Panellinios charge that made it 34-15. Four minutes into the second quarter Wright finally ended the Turow drought, but even with the visitors scoring, they could not stop Panellinios long enough to make any progress. Vougioukas ank a free throw as the lead reached 20 points. Deane set up Gray for a three and Wojcik inside to get within 40-25, but Blakney came on to give Panellinios a 45-27 lead at the half.

Wright opened the second half with free throws and and Gray added a basket as Turow tried to gather steam, but a Johnsen triple showed that Panellinios was in control. Wysocki tried to spark the visitors, but could only get his team within 60-49 on a triple at the end of the quarter. Panellinios scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to stabilize its control. Wojcik and Gray continued to battle away, but they were met by Panellinios scorers at every turn. A Johnsen three with two-and-a-half minutes to go made the score 76-59 and proved to be the dagger in Turow’s hopes as the hosts closed out a big win.

Head Coaches

ZOUROS, ILIAS
Panellinios Opap
"First of all I want to congratulate my players. It was an important victory. However, it has not finished anything. We have seen teams beginning with 3 victories and be excluded before. We should remain serious and assembled because difficult games will follow."
URLEP, ANDREJ
PGE Turow
"Congratulations to Panellinios for the win. e didn't play well in the first half, especially in the second quarter. In the second half we improved but we were struggling in offense. We need hard work to stay in this competition."

Players

KOLOKAS, MARKOS
Panellinios Opap
"It was a difficult game against a good team. We played very well in the second period both in defense and offense. We did not expect to achieve this victory with so much a big difference. The qualification has still not been sealed and we will travel to Poland to win."
WITKA, ROBERT
PGE Turow
"I want to congratulate Panellinios for this win . They played hard at the beginning with the defensive pressure and that made a big difference. In the second half we tried to react but they were already home safe."
