THE STAKES

Group F leader Lietuvos rytas could advance to the next round by winning this game, providing Azovmash loses to Novo Mesto. Le Mans, at 0-3, needs to get into the win column if it is to have any chance to advance.

THE TAKE

Undefeated Lietuvos rytas uses defense and solid team play as its main weapons. Last week’s win 62-79 against Le Mans featured Rytas at its best – seven players with at least 6 points per game, 16 offensive rebounds and 40.9% shooting from beyond the arc. The Lithuanian team ranks first in rebounding, averaging 41 per game, while Le Mans is weak in the paint, nabbing an average 30 rebounds a game, and is struggling from downtown at 3%. The backcourt matchups are the main focus, with Tyrese Rice against Rochestie Taylor, and scoring aces Renaldas Seibutis and Alex Acker going head-to-head.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We must be concentrated and try to demonstrate the level of the game as well as in France. But it will not be easy. It is still unclear about Lawrence Roberts, because he had an injury - twisted ankle. Roberts wants to play, but we will have to decide what is the best club and the player himself. We love our fans and their support, so we must fight ant try to win this game."

"There was no easy game in France, so we must expect the same and in Vilnius. Our opponents - an athletic and strong team. Last week, we managed to break the game, when the number of times in a row we grabbed defensive rebounds and did not let them score."
Jonas Valanciunas - Lietuvos Rytas (photo bc.lrytas)Lietuvos Rytas romped to an 87-49 victory over Le Mans on Tuesday at Siemens Arena to remain undefeated in Group F and lock up a berth in the Eurocup Last 16. The hosts scored the first 8 points and made it 15-2 en route to a one-side win that saw the lead hit the 40-point mark in the third quarter. Rytas made 8 of 15 three-pointers (53%) and outrebounded Le Mans 45-26. Predrag Samardziski and Renaldas Seibutis scored 14 points each for the winners, Jonas Valanciunas tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds, Arturas Jomantas scored 12 and Tyrese Rice posted 10 points and 6 assists. J.P. Batista netted 10 for Le Mans in defeat.

It took a few minutes for the teams to warm up with missed shots and turnovers taking up the first minute-and-a-half of action. Rytas got going first as Rice set up Seibutis and Lawrence Roberts on back-to-back three-pointers. A Valanciunas slam made it 8-0 before Batista put Le Mans on the scoreboard after nearly three-and-a-half minutes. Another Valanciunas slam made it a double-digit edge midway through the first quarter and Rice pushed it to 15-2 with a triple. Taylor Rochestie, William Coleman and Travon Bryant all scored for Le Mans, but Rytas always answered and Jomantas lifted the lead to 26-10 after 10 minutes. A Mindaugas Katelynas dunk took the Rytas lead to 10 early in the second quarter and Steponas Babrauskas made it 33-10 from downtown. Max Kouguere tried to ignite Le Mans with a triple and Batista scored down low twice, but Rytas kept draining shots as Seibutis nailed a triple. Rytas continued to pad the lead as Seibutis and Jomantas climbed to 49-21 at halftime.

Roberts put Rytas ahead 31 with the first points of the second half and Seibutis and Valanciunas continued to grow the advantage. Alex Acker and Rochestie generated Le Mans points, but the visitors could not slow the Rytas attack and Jomantas made it a 40-point game at 68-28 from the line with two minutes left in the third quarter. Kouguere connected from behind the arc and to make it 68-31 through three quarters. A pair of Marcellus Sommerville baskets helped Le Mans trim the deficit early in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late and Rytas strolled through the fourth quarter with a win and a berth in the Last 16 in its pocket.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"We were really dominant on the court tonight. I congratulate my guys because they were focused and did everything we had planned. We wanted to stop two of their players and I think we did just that. Also, it's important that we started the game so well, most of our shots fell in. You can always find bad things the team did but tonight we did everything right: we shot well, we rebounded well and we were moving around the court sensibly."
JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"There was only one team on the court tonight and that team was very, very good. And the other couldn't really be called a team. It was only a group of players. I am sorry for my team, this kind of basketball is unacceptable. It's not professional basketball. Everything that was good was done by Lietuvos Rytas and everything that was bad was done by us."

Players

JOMANTAS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"We were really careful before this game. Our coach told us this was the most important game because if we won we would qualify for the next round. And we did that, even if seemed quite easy. We were aggressive from the very start and quickly built a solid lead."
