THE TAKE

New head coach Aleksandar Dzikic will lead Union Olimpija out for the first time when his club hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Thursday night at the Tivoli Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Dzikic took over the reins after Memi Becirovic resigned over the weekend and now has little time to light a fire under his charges with the Top 16 looming in the background. At 3-7, Olimpija will need at least three wins in its remaining four games to have a real shot at advancing. And with two of those games against the bottom two in the standings and another against second-places Tau Ceramica, it could be said that this home game is the key to that happening. Meanwhile Zalgiris has reeled off four straight wins to improve to 6-4 and would already clinch a spot in the Top 16 with a win this week. When these teams met in Lithuania in November, Marcus Brown had a night to remember as Zalgiris won easily 91-72. Brown regained the top spot on the all-time Euroleague Basketball scoring charts as he posted 28 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. DeJuan Collins also shined with 17 points and 8 assists for the Lithuanian champs. Collins now leads the Euroleague in assists this season. The duo of Brown and Collins, with explosive guard Marko Popovic coming off the bench, will again lead the charge for Zalgiris, which only has one road win this season. At the other end, Olimpija's rookie playmaker Goran Dragic has found his game recently, averaging 15.5 points on 90.9% two-point shooting, 3.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game over his last four. Dragic joins Maurice Bailice and Ronnie Taylor as the other major weapons in the hosts’ backcourt. Zalgiris is one of the Euroleague's better rebounding teams, with the likes of center Eureljus Zukauskas and forwards Paulius Jankunas, Jonas Maciulis and Goran Jurak giving head coach Rimantas Grigas an advantage in the paint, that Marko Milic, Hasan Rizvic, Chris Booker and Miha Zupan will need to deal with. Small forward Jasmin Hukic could also play a big role for the hosts both by helping the big men on defense and rebounding and with his strong perimeter shooting. Although Zalgiris is the hotter team, a coaching change could have the hosts roaring to go and that will be the X-factor on Thursday. But even if Olimpija is at its best, Zalgiris won't roll over, making this game a potential crowd pleaser that could come down to the final shot.

Quotes Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"I saw the first game against Zalgiris on TV. Union Olimpija played well, they had a period of good play, but also a bad one. Because of that they lost by 19 as Marcus Brown played one of his finest games of the season, but also Marko Milic played well. I hope Marko will repeat that performance and I am convinced that with good preparation we can go for Zalgiri's weak points. To get the most important win of the season we will have to be brave and show energy and collective game."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"We are leave for Ljubljana without one of our centers, Michael Bradley. He is injured, so he will be replaced by youngster Donatas Motiejunas. It is hard to prepare for a game like this, because Union Olimpija changed their coach just this weekend, so he will surely try to install some new schemes into Ljubljana's game. He didn’t have much time, but players tend to play well under new coach. Recently we have been playing well, but most of our wins were achieved at home. We still are not a team that can play well on the road. We are not thinking about Top 16 possibilities and take this game as any other."

Players

MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"The change of coach can be an extra motivation for the team or else can be the total destruction of our morale. I hope for the best option since we are ahead of the most important game of the season for us. I am sure we will have good preparation and thet we will be ready on Thursday. Zalgiris is a very good team. They started rather slow but now they have reached the level we all expected from them, so it will be a difficult game."
ZUKAUSKAS, EURELIJUS
Zalgiris
"Union Olimpija's biggest advantage is their home court. They play extremely well at Tivoli Arena, where they downed CSKA and Olympiacos. At home they play aggressive and always fight till the end. I would single out Marko Milic as their main player. He is a leader on the court. Of course, every time we step on the court, we think about the upcoming Top 16, but every game is important and we have to play as hard as always and achieve victory."
Marcus Brown - Zalgiris Kaunas The Euroleague's all-time leading scorer erupted at just the right time to lead Zalgiris into the Top 16 with a 74-83 road win over Union Olimpija in Group A on Thursday. A couple other teams were happy, too, as the Zalgiris victory assured that Tau Ceramica and Olympiacos also advanced to the next round. All three and Montepaschi Siena have 7-4 records and are tied for second place in the group. Olimpija fell to 3-8. Marcus Brown took over the game with 11 points - including 3 consecutive three-pointers - in a 0-16 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters and decided the outcome for Zalgiris. Remarkably, Brown had been scoreless until then, but finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Jonas Maciulis followed with 14 points, Goran Jurak 13 and Marko Popovic 12 for the winners. Olimpija, which had taken its first lead shortly before Brown's explosion, could not buy a basket most of the game and thus could not win for new head coach Aleksandar Dzivic. Maurice Bailey had 15 points for the hosts, Marko Milic and Ronell Taylor 13 each, while Jasmin Hukic chipped in 10.

Neither team found the basket until Milic's one-handed put-back opened the scoring. The drought continued until Jurak downed a corner jumper against his old team to make it 2-3 with almost 4 minutes played. Olimpija then suffered a five-miss possession before Jurak downed an alley-oop fastbreak. Milic made it 4-5 at the foul line, but Maciulis answered with a layup and post-up basket for Zalgiris. Hazan Rizvic hit a triple and Milic converted a steal for a 9-9 tie, but Jurak again stepped up with a long-range bomb to keep Zalgiris ahead. Collins hit free throws and Eurelijus Zukauskas got loose for a fastbreak dunk to make it 9-16 and force Dzivic's first timeout as Olimpija coach. Nonetheless, the hosts kept missing and Popovic's layup at buzzer let Zalgiris double Olimpija on the board, 9-18, after 10 minutes.

Marko Milic - Union OlimpijaGoran Dragic fired up the crowd with a steal and basket to start the second quarter. When Milic added a post-up bank shot, Miha Zupan free throws and a put-back rebound, Olimpija was suddenly within 17-18. But Maciulis had other ideas and followed a triple with a bank shot for Zalgiris before Zukauskas dunked to make it 19-25. Bailey, Dragic and Zupan kept Olimpija as close as 23-26, but Collins drilled a triple in response. Olimpija played pinball with its possessions until Hukic's turnaround and a fastbreak layup made it 27-29. An intentional foul call and triple by Popovic let Zalgiris go up 27-32, but Bailey's three-point play let Olimpija get within 30-34 at the break.

Bailey got Olimpija even closer with the second-half's first basket, but Zukauskas answered with a three-point play. Boris Gorenc's first points in an Olimpija uniform made it 35-37, and then Milic tied it with a put-back of another four-shot possession. Taylor brought the crowd to its feet with the go-ahead steal and layup, which came with a free throw to make it 40-37, Olimpija's first lead all game. The Zalgiris backcourt trio of Brown, Popovic and DeJuan Collinis had just 9 points combined until then. Meanwhile, Gorence added a jumper to the lead, but Maciulis matched it and Popovic hit a free throw to make it 42-41. Brown's first points all night, on a runner in the lane, put Zalgiris back in front, and then he curled off a screen for a triple, stole and buried another from downtown on the buzzer as Zalgiris suddenly was in full charge again, 42-49, after 30 minutes.

Brown wasn't done. He opened the final quarter burying a third consecutive triple from the corner. When Collins stole and layed up, Zalgiris had a 0-16 run and a 42-54 lead. Olimpija's crowd was now silent throughout their team's timeout. Bailey ended Olimpija's drought, but Brown drove now for a basket. Brown was back at the foul line soon for 2 free throws and fed Paulius Jankunas for a basket before driving again for what was now 17 points in under 5 minutes. He still wasn't done: an intentional foul on Dragic got Brown 2 more free throws to make it 49-64 with under 7 minutes left. Neither was Olimpija giving up. Taylor converted a three-point play and Dragic a fastbreak layup to make it 54-64. Brown hit a running hook, but Hukic downed a triple to lower the difference to single digits, 57-66. Antoher Brown free throw and a miss that was put back by Jankunas spelled the beginning of the end at 57-70. The Zalgiris lead peaked at 60-76 before Olimpija made a 10-0 run, but it proved too late as Popovic reappared with 6 points down the stretch to seal his team's ticket to the Top 16.

Head Coaches

DZIKIC, ALEKSANDAR
Union Olimpija
"Everything went the way we expected while we managed to stop Marcus Brown and Marko Popovic. Once Brown starting to hit shots all over the places, we lost control. I have nothing to say against my players because they gave the best they had. We made too many mistakes, committed too many turnovers and missed too many easy shots. It is all because the pressure we have to win games. We haven't given up with this loss, we will try to carry on working and wins will arrive in the near future."
GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"It was a very important game for both teams and this is why both teams were nervous on court, making too many mistakes. It was not a fun-to-watch game. Marcus Brown made us win tonight. We hit all the important shots down the stretch."

Players

TAYLOR, RONELL
Union Olimpija
"It was a very tough game. We tried all we had to win the game, but nothing went as expected. We will keep trying to get more wins in the upcoming games."
BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"I am happy to keep our winning streak going. I am also happy that we were able to show that we can also get big wins on the road."
JURAK, GORAN
Zalgiris
"Both teams struggled a bit due to the importance of this game. It looked like any team could have won the game until the final minutes. We hve players who can win games by themselves and this is exactly what Marcus Brown did tonight."
