THE TAKE

Olympiacos will look for its first win in the Top 16 when it hosts Tau Ceramica on Thursday at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. The teams have met numerous times in recent seasons, including the 2007 Quarterfinal Playoffs, when Tau swept the best-of-three series. Olympiacos started the Top 16 with a tough loss at Armani Jeans Milano last week, where the Reds’ main bright spot came from forward Georgios Printezis, who took advantage of the injury to Josh Childress to showcase his abilities with a career-high 22 points on 11-for-13 two-point shooting. Tau started with an easy 99-77 win over Asseco Prokom as three different players scored at least 20 points, including league-leading scorer Igor Rakocevic, who was named MVP for the month of January earlier this week. However, Tau enters this game without its top inside player, center Tiago Splitter, who is sidelined with a leg injury. In his place, head coach Dusko Ivanovic will need another strong showing from centers Will McDonald, who set a club record with 6 blocks last week, and Stanko Barac, who recorded a season-high 10 rebounds. The duo will team with sharp shooting power forward Mirza Teletovic up front, but they won’t have it easy against Olympiacos’s frontline of star center Nikola Vujcic, Ioannis Bourousis, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Zoran Erceg. Tau small forward Pete Mickeal and veteran Sergi Vidal will square off against Printezis and Panos Vasilopoulos. Meanwhile in the backcourt, Olympicos head coach Panagiotis Giannkis can choose from Lynn Greer, Yotam Halperin, Theo Papaloukas, Milos Teodosic and newest signing Jannero Paro. Tau counters with Pablo Prigioni and Vlado Ilevski at point guard alongside Rakocevic. The Tau superscorer has averaged 17.2 points in six games against Olympiacos over the past two seasons, while making 3.3 three-pointers per game at an incredible 52.6%. The Reds won’t have an easy time stopping him in what could be the key matchup of the night. If Rakocevic finds himself double-teamed and Teletovic is outside, the visitors will need McDonald and Barac to come through offensively to establish a presence inside. Meanwhile Olympiacos has had an extra week to familiarize Pargo to the team and he could team with the rest if the deep backcourt to create some electrifying plays, perhaps going at Rakocevic at the other end. Playing at home in front of its passionate fans, Olympiacos will have a slight edge, but no one can expect either team to win big in what promises to be 40 minutes of action and excitement.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos
  • Guard Theo Papaloukas led the Euroleague in the regular season with 5 assists per game. He has recorded at least 4 assists in 12 consecutive Euroleague games dating back to last season’s Euroleague championship game.
  • Papaloukas needs 2 more steals to become the first player in Euroleague Basketball history to amass 250 career steals.
  • Guard Milos Teodosic’s Euroleague debut came against Tau Ceramica on opening night of last season.
  • Forward Georgios Printezis scored a career-high 22 points on 11-for-13 two-point shooting last week against Armani Jeans Milano.
  • Big man Sofoklis Schortsanitis scored 17 points in the last Greek League game against Olympia Athienitis Larissa. It was the most points “Baby Shaq” has scored in the past two seasons.
  • Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary since Panagiotis Giannakis became head coach of Olympiacos. The “Dragon” succeeded Pini Gershon on February 3, 2008, and led the Reds to the Euroleague Quarterfinal Playoffs, the Greek Cup final and the Greek League finals.
Tau Ceramica

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"Tau is a team that plays fast and tries to create scoring opportunities on the open court, so we have to control the rhythm of the match and to dominate under the basket. It is going to be a tough and very interesting game and we will try hard to win and improve our position. There are five more games to come and the qualification depends on a lot of factors during this Top 16 tournament. Patience and insistence are the key factors for achieving our target and this is our belief that is also known by our fans, who support us from the beginning of the season."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"It's going to be a tough challenge. Olympiacos is a very powerful roster, they have a deep rotation and several quality players. I would say it's one of the better built teams all around Europe. Surely they are one of the main candidates to make it to the next stage and they will play hard at home. Even if we win in Athens, nothing is done yet because there will be four more games and everything can happen. There are two players that can make the difference; one of them is Vujcic, he is smart and can create from the center spot. Schortsianitis is unstoppable because of his strength and power. In addition, they have Printezis, who could be considered as their main threat inside right now, and Bourousis, who can be dangerous because of his shooting skills as well. We would like to grab a win and offer it to Tiago. A news like that affect all of us, but in the toughest moments we must get stronger."

Players

HALPERIN, YOTAM
Olympiacos
"We lost to AJ Milano last week, but there is no time and reason to cry. We do not have the possibility to think of the defeat we suffered last week, but we are obliged to look ahead and play our basketball. Olympiacos has a lot of experienced players who know what they have to do for the team. Tau is also a team that has experience, but I think that the result depends on our performance. If we will keep our concentration for 40 minutes in both ends, we will make it."
PRIGIONI, PABLO
Tau Ceramica
"The game in Athens is going to ge a big and difficult one, but we must focus on our game and try to play our basketball in order to have a chance there. They know it's a key game for them and for sure they will start very strong. Maybe we could take advantage of the pressure they could feel playing at home. If we are able to stay into the game and take a short lead in the last period, I think they could struggle a bit so we should exploit that. Anyway, a win or a defeat in Athens won't be decissive, as there are four more games and nothing is finished yet. There is time to react."
Ioannis Bourousis - OlympiacosOlympiacos bounced back from a loss in its Top 16 opener by edging Tau Ceramica 73-70 on Thursday night at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. In a tough game that came down to foul shooting, Olympiacos stayed a step ahead of Tau by making 5 of 6 free throws in the final 35 seconds to hold on. The Reds ended Tau's six-game Euroleague winning streak and the two are now tied at 1-1 in Group E. Lynn Greer paced the Reds with 21 points and Ioannis Bourousis recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds to help his team win the battle of the boards 36-27. Yotam Halperin added 10 points for the home team. Rakocevic led Tau with 23 points, Mirza Teletovic had 14 and Pete Mickeal 11 in defeat. A 10-0 early fourth-quarter run in which Greer scored 6 points and Bourousis made a huge block spelled the turning point in what had been consistent leads for Tau up to that point.

Igor Rakocevic - Tau CeramicaOlympiacos got off to a good 7-2 start thanks to baskets coming from Bourousis, Halperin and Greer as the Reds alternated between penetrating and shooting from the perimeter. Soon, however, Tau found a three-pointer by Teletovic and easy points from Will McDonald to tie at 7-7. The guests caused more trouble to Olympiacos on the backboards as they soon gathered a bunch of offensive rebounds. Olympiacos stayed ahead, however, as Halperin assisted an easy Bouroussis dunk and Nikola Vujcic added a layup as the Reds big men made it 13-10. Teletovic remained hot from three-point distance, with his next triple good for a 13-13 tie. When Rakocevic fired in his own first downtown strike, Tau was ahead for the first time, 13-16. The visitors seized control of the rhythm now as Rakocevic drove for a basket and Teletovic buried consecutive triples to make it 16-24. Teletovic had made 4 of 5 so far from the arc and had 14 points of Tau's 18-26 advantage after one quarter.

Tau increased its difference to start the second quarter, and when Pete Mickeal finished a basket-plus-free throw combo, Tau was ahead 20-31 and Olympiacos head coach Panagiotis Giannakis needed a timeout. The Reds then fed the ball to Sofoklis Schortsianitis, who cut it to 26-33. Tau was now having a hard time to get connected now as Schortsianitis dished to Halperin for a corner triple at 29-33. However, Rakocevic did not miss from the free-throw line and nailed a good three-pointer to restore a big advantage, 29-38, for the guests. Papaloukas penetrated for 33-40, but Rakocevic was again there for Tau to make it 33-42. Bouroussis was now bearing offensive responsibility for Olympiacos, dunking with force. Mickeal put back an offensive rebound as the teams went to the lockers for halftime with Tau up 36-44.

Yotam Halperin - OlympiacosRakocevic nailed a difficult three-pointer to open the second half. Vujcic answered inside as easy shots became hard to find. Mickeal exchanged his pair of baskets for one each by Bouroussis and Vujcic to keep Tau in front 43-51. Olympiacos was now finding easier ways to the basket as Printezis connected with a layup for 47-53. Again Mickeal created his own shot to answer back, but Greer exlpoded for 5 straight points on a layup and three-pointer combination to trim the difference to 52-55 and get the crowd excited. Bouroussis and Greer extended Olympiacos' run to 9-0 to bring the Reds ahead at 56-55. Vlado Ilievski came in off the bench to save the quarter's last word with a three-pointer to make it 56-58 in favor of Tau after 30 minutes.

Ilievski found a layup at 56-60 to open the final quarter, but Greer copied him before Printezis drove for a basket-plus-free throw to help Olympiacos sail in front, 61-60. The Reds' morale was now sky-high. Bouroussis blocked a shot by Rakocevic that sent Greer for a fastbreak layup at 63-60. After a Tau timeout, the visitors reached their fifth consecutive scoreless minute as Greer scored again, increasing the Olympiacos run to 10-0 and the lead to 66-60. Rakocevic stepped up for a huge layup to revive Tau, and then Ilievski popped in a jumper to make it 66-64. Vujcic connected for 68-64 before both teams shared some bad decisions. Rakocevic fired in a desicive triple to make it a one-point game, 68-67, with 35 seconds to the buzzer. Greer and Rakocevic exchanged free throws at 70-69. Jannero Pargo made his 2 attempts next, but Pablo Prigioni went only 1-for-2, so Olympiacos had a 72-70 lead and possession with 10 seconds remaining. Greer made it 73-70 at the line, and as Tau failed to create a shot from the three-point range in the last 9 seconds, the Reds celebrated their first Top 16 win.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"In this game we showed the patience we didn't show in the other ones. So I am happy that we showed we learn from our mistakes. We handled very well a difficult situation against a great team and managed to come back and keep our nerve down the stretch. I am also satisfied with the fact that we made our fans happy with this win. Patience and working hard will eventually deliver the wins."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We were well prepared to face Olympiacos’s physical game. They tend to use much their bodies on the offensive end. But, we got into early foul trouble and had to use Mickeal near the basket. I am sceptical about the fact that we did not score for about three minutes despite our good ball movement. In general, it was a balanced game. As far as Tiago Splitter's injury, I believe he will be in position to start practicing in about 10 days."

Players

GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"We managed to come back against a great team. After halftime, we played better defense and did not allow Tau to create open shots. We never lost faith during the game and as time went on, our morale got higher and higher. I think that with such a performance, we will have a good opportunity to win in Vitoria, too."
RAKOCEVIC, IGOR
Tau Ceramica
"We faced big problems with the fouls. Concerning the fact that we also had only three big guys to use, that influenced the game, too. We were called for many fouls early in the game and that cost us at the end. We had the opportunity to win it though, but we missed a lot of open shots in the second half. We were close to winning the game, but we will have the chance to win in Vitoria. The difference is not so big and I am optimistic that we will beat Olympiacos at home. We now have to win the forthcoming Euroleague games and when the time comes, to think about capturing the first spot, too."
