THE TAKE

With its coaching situation still in flux one day before the game, Union Olimpija will nonetheless try to give its fans a first Group A win of the season when it hosts AEK Athens on Thursday in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Union Olimpija (0-4) started the season with a pair of narrow defeats, but then lost by 17 at home to Tau Vitoria in Week 3, leading to the resignation of coach Pino Grdovic. This week, former Olimpija head coaches Zmago Sagadin and Saso Filipovski were reunited with the team in hopes of trying to rescue the situation. They both were present at Tuesday's practice, run by interim coach Denis Bajramovic. Another team looking for a change, at least to its fortunes on the road, is AEK (2-2), which has lost both its away games by a total of 48 points. Last week at Tau, AEK opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but faded afterwards, eventually scoring just 8 points in the whole fourth quarter of a 77-62 defeat. One player who AEK hopes can help change its fortunes is new point guard Lionel Chalmers, who has been registered to play against Olimpija. Until now, the point guard position has been manned by Spiros Panteliadis (10 ppg., 2.7 apg.) and defensive-minded Dror Hagag (4.5 ppg.). It remains to be seen what changes the new Olimpija coaches will make, but it is certain that they will need to play to the team's strength – its guards. More than half of Olimpija's points come from its guard trio of Jimmy Oliver (18 ppg.), Yotam Halperin (11.7 ppg., 4.7 apg.) and Teemu Rannikko (12.7 ppg.). The only inside player to score considerably so far has been Szymon Szewczyk (11 ppg.), but Olimpija's problems have a lot more to do with defense. Its 84 points allowed per game is the most in the Euroleague and its 26.3 rebounds per game are the least. Szewczyk and Vasco Evitmov (8.7 ppg, 6 rpg.) will have their hands full against the waves of big men that AEK brings with Yiannis Bouroussis (8 ppg., 7.2 rpg.), Taylor Coppenwrath (8.2 ppg.), Amit Tamir and Panteleimon Papaeikoim, even though they have not helped the team do much better than Olimpja on the boards (26.8 rpg.). Hagag may have a big role to fill as AEK will need to attack the Olimpija ballhandlers and keep the score low, making his experience against his Israeli nation teammate, Halperin, potentially valuable. If Chalmers is also ready to add something in his first game, AEK might stay close and have a chance for its first road win against an underconfident Olimpija team feeling heavy pressure to win its first game before the home fans.

Rimac tried to wake AEK up with a jumper while Morovic returned to the bench with 4 fouls. Hasan Rizvic worked well in the low post while Halperin fed Dijan to bring Olimpija within 40-41. Lionel Chalmers made a fast break layup in a 0-6 run which Pelekanos capped with a three, forcing an Olimpija timeout at 40-47. The hosts improved their defense and Olimpija found a go-to guy in Oliver, who scored 7 unanswered points on a driving layup and 5 free throws. AEK had 3 consecutive turnovers, while Evtimov capped a 9-0 run which a layup which put Olimpija in charge, 49-47. Rimac and Panteliadis combined for 4 quick points, but free throws by Rannikko and a buzzer-beating layup by Evtimov tied the game again, 53-53, after 30 minutes.

Panteliadis and Oliver exchanged baskets early in teh fourth quarter, while Rannikko hit a three from the top of the key to give Olimpija a 58-55 edge. The hosts, pushed by a noisy crowd, improved their defense and stayed focused in both ends. Evtimov made a short hook which Coppenrath matched with a power basket. Oliver nailed a crucial triple, but AEK was not done. Coppenrath followed free throws with a tip-in to make it a two-point game, 63-61. Olimpija called timeout while Kalambokis fired in a three to put AEK in charge, 63-64. Kalambokis made stepped up with 4 free throws, giving AEK a 65-68 lead with 3 minutes to go. Halperin scored from downtown while Szewczyk followed free throws with a driving layup for a 72-68 Olimpija edge already in the final 2 minutes. AEK called timeout and Coppenrath made free throws, but Halperin and Oliver sealed the outcome with 5 quick points, enough for all Olimpija fans to celebrate a well-deserved win!

Head Coaches

SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Union Olimpija
"Even though we could only prepare this game for a couple days it was crucial to us and we won it, which boosts us to work even more. In the Euroleague you can only win with an aggressive defense. The final difference is too much for what was seen on court. In the last minutes my players were very nervous but we finished it off well. Now a lot of work is ahead of us because we have lost nothing yet. With a series of wins we can aspire to the Top 16."
KAKIOUSIS, ELEFTHERIOS
AEK Athens
"We had the opportunity to win, but in the last quarter we left too much space to Olimpija players which they punished with a couple of triples. Our concentration was not at a desirable level in the decisive moments."

Players

EVTIMOV, VASSIL
Union Olimpija
"Thanks to our fans. They have demonstrated that they are with the club in the toughest moments. It is a very important win from a psychological point of view as the series of losses affected our morale."
DROBNJAK, DRAGISA
Union Olimpija
"The kids started to play on defense and we all could see the result. It is a very important win for everybody because now we all know we can advance thanks to hard work."
PANTELIADIS, SPYRIDON
AEK Athens
"The home team showed more will for the win than we did. It was a balanced game and when you get to that situation in the last minutes, the host has the advantage. We didn't know how to stop Olimpija's outside shooting in the last quarter."
RIMAC, SLAVEN
AEK Athens
"We deserved to lose as we didn't play good defense in the last quarter. I wish Olimpija all the best for the future."
