THE TAKE

A big battle with Top 16 implications is expected in Italy on Thursday when Virtus VidiVici Bologna hosts Union Olimpija in Group A action. Though VidiVici enters the game tied for last place in the group at 1-4 and has dropped four in a row, three of those have been on the road. Head coach Stefano Pillastrini's squad know that a home win this week would catapult the team back into Top 16 contention. Meanwhile, Olimpija is tied for fifth place in the group at 2-3, but is 0-2 on the road with an average margin of defeat of 23.5 points. VidiVici is not among the highest scoring teams in the league, despite boasting a pair of dangerous scorers on the wings: Delonte Holland, who is fourth in the league in that category ans Dewarick Spencer. One of VidiVici's strengths as a team is offensive rebounding, however the club's activity on the offensive glass has curiously not resulted in many fouls called as it is last in the league in that category. VidiVici is also last in two-point shooting percentage (44.4%). Also not a high-scoring side, Olimpija's biggest problems have been poor three-point shooting (27.5%) and weak play on the defensive glass. Team captain Marko Milic is expected in the lineup after missing practice with a twisted ankle, but a knee injury could sideline center Mirza Begic. Accordingly, the rebounding issue could turn into a focal part of the game, as VidiVici turns to its starting frontline of Roberto Chiacig and Guilherme Giovannoni as well as Holland and to make an impact against Milic, Hasan Rizvic and Miha Zupan. Olimpija's biggest test on defense will be on the wings, where Jasmin Hukic and Ronell Taylor will be asked to handle Bologna's big scorers. A key head-to-head duel pits rookie playmakers Will Conroy of VidiVici and Olimpija's Goran Dragic against one another. On paper, these teams seem to match up well, with the issue of rebounds and the young point guards potentially being what the game is decided by. Olimpija has the needed leadership to get the result on the road if all comes together, while VidiVici needs to see how its team would respond to a close game, which is what is expected as two teams target a big win that could impact the rest of the season.

Quotes Head Coaches

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
“At this point we don’t have important opponents or less important opponents. We are only focused on us. We have to repeat the good things we showed in the first half of the last game – team defense, rebounds and the search for extra passes. We have to avoid turnovers, because they can be deadly against a team like Union Olimpija. We are still trying to find a reaction when the things aren’t going good on the game. This killed us in a lot of games so far, because we have the inclination to go individually instead of playing together. I don’t want to say this game against Union Olimpija is not a game to win, because we want to react. But we are mostly focused on the Italian League and beating Ljubljana won’t change anything in the perspective to play a key home-game against Rieti on Sunday. For us now, unfortunately, it’s not a matter of win or lose, but it’s a matter to play good basketball. I think the win is consequent upon a good game. When we reach this goal, I am sure we will achieve wins.”

“My teammates and I are living these weeks in a very strange way. We are in a difficult situation, with something not clear inside and outside the team that can’t help us. The most important thing for us now is thinking to play not against Union Olimpija, CSKA Moscow or Prokom Sopot, but only focusing ourselves on growing. Playing a good game is important, because our fans are waiting for a reaction – even more than a win. Moreover, I think wins come from a good attitude. But until our attitude isn’t okay and the situation isn’t clearer, we will keep struggle. It’s clear that Virtus Bologna is a team that has to aspire to qualify for the Top 16. But some unexpected situations have complicated our way. Of course, we want to play the second round. But now we are in the middle of a deep crisis, our goal is to come out from it. To do that, we must thave the right approach. The same approach Union Olimpija had against Olympiacos and CSKA. We must to take Ljubljana as an example of humbleness."
DONCIC, SASA
Union Olimpija
"We are in front of one of the crucial games of our season. We travel to Bologna after four straight losses and we are all aware that our fans are not going to stand any more bad games from us. That's why I promise that we will do our best and we will leave our heart on the court hoping to repeat our game against Olympiacos and CSKA. After those two wins we grew up too fast and now we have to prove that it was not luck, but that we deserved it."
Dewarick Spencer - Virtus VidiVici Virtus VidiVici broke its four-game losing streak in Group A by downing Union Olimpija 101-91 at home on Thursday in Bologna, Italy. Both teams now have 2-4 records and are tied with Zalgiris for the fifth and decisive spot in the group. Dewarick Spencer paced the winners with 34 points on 7-for-8 two-point and 5-for-9 three-point shooting, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Guilherme Giovannoni added 19 points, Delonte Holland had 16, Fabio Di Bella 12 and Roberto Chiacig 10 for Virtus. Jasmin Hukic led Olimpija with 22 points. Miha Zupan added 19, Goran Dragic had 13 and Marko Milic 12. Hukic led a 0-10 run that got Olimpija within 21-20 after 10 minutes and Zupan pushed the guests ahead by double digits soon after. Booker, Spencer and Chiacig brought Virtus back within 41-43 by halftime. Virtus went ahead in the second half, but Dragic managed to tie the game for the last time, 59-59. After that, Virtus rolled as Spencer and Donnie McGrath combined for 11 points in an 18-2 run, while Zupan, Milic and Hukic fueled a 3-17 response to get Olimpija back in the game at 86-83. A critical triple by Fabio Di Bella and free throws by Holland put Virtus way ahead for good.

After Hukic opened the game with a three-pointer, Spencer scored 7 consecutive points to lift VidiVici. Giovannoni made it 9-3 with foul shots, but Hukic scored on a jumper and Dragic penetrated for a basket-plus-foul. When Milic exploited a Maurice Bailey steal for a fast-break slam, Olimpija capped its own 0-7 run and took the lead midway through the quarter. VidiVici replied with a 10-0 run started by Di Bella, fueled by Olimpija mistakes and capped by a Holland jumper. But it was a first quarter full of runs as Olimpija answered with an identical 0-10 surge in which Bailey added a pull-up shot with an additional foul and Hukic hit another three-pointer to give the lead back to the visitors. Holland, however, stole a ball from Bailey’s hands and dunked alone to make it 20-21 after 10 minutes.

Goran Dragic - Union OlimpijaGiovannoni scored a layup to start the second quarter, but Hukic didn’t take his hand out of the microwave and launched Olimpija's next run. He bagged three triples in three minutes, Bailey added another and Zupan took over the offensive key to cap a 0-12 run that lifted the guests up to 27-38. Chris Booker's wide-open jumper maintained the 11-point lead for Ljubljana until Bailey committed an unsportsmanlike foul that helped VidiVici get back to 32-40. The hosts continued to close the gap as a three-pointer by Spencer and a fast-break basket by Holland made it 37-41. Then, two straight low-post moves by Chiacig against Zupan made it 41-43 at the break.

VidiVici's defense returned with an higher tone in the third quarter as Olimpija could not find the basket for two minutes and the host used Giovannoni and Spencer to go ahead 47-43. Booker and Taylor tied the game with layups, but VidiVici tried to run away again thanks to a three-pointer by McGrath and a three-point play by Holland that made it 57-49 midway through the quarter. Another fastbreak by Giovannoni and a three-pointer by Spencer widened the gap up to 13 points, forcing an Olimpija timeout. But VidiVici remained hot as McGrath and Spencer added two more three-pointers to the amazing 21-4 run that broke the game. After a pair of foul shots by Holland, the hosts led 72-53 by the end of the third period.

The hosts's lead reached 22 points after Spencer and Giovannoni opened the final quarter with back-to-back triples. Olimpija started its full-court pressure and the game incredibly changed. Dragic provoked trouble for the hosts by pushing the ball upcourt and steals narrowed the gap to 81-66. Hukic's sixth three-pointer and Zupan's put-back made it 83-71 after some more VidiVici turnovers. Moreover, Garri missed a dunk and Zupan exploited it with a three-pointer to make it 83-74 with four minutes to play. A free-throw by Di Bella tried to stop the rally, but Sasa Doncic hit foul shots and Olimpija also posted a five-point play with Zupan scoring a triple-with-a-foul and Virtus's Luca Garri touching the ball on the additional free-throw, making it 2 points for the guests. It was incredible to see a 86-83 scoreboard when Doncic stole another ball and scored a layup with two minutes left. Then Virtus captain Di Bella hit the key-shot of the night – a three-pointer that made it 89-83 . Di Bella, again, went 2 for 2 on free-throws in the closing minute making it 92-85 and securing a hard-fought win for the “Black V.”

Head Coaches

PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"I expected a big reaction from my team, especially after our choice to play without Anderson and Crosariol in order to put responsibilities on fewer players. In the third quarter, we broke the game open, but we allowed 38 points in the last quarter. That was an atrocity. We struggled too much against the full-court pressure, leaving the ball in their hands. But I am happy for the final reaction. With the momentum on Olimpija's side, we had defensive stops and scored an important three-pointer with Di Bella. Now our goal is to practice better and go in the same direction."

Players

SPENCER, DEWARICK
Virtus VidiVici
"I don't know what happened in the last quarter, but I am very glad we finally won this game. I think we played like a team tonight and we have to keep working this way. Third-quarter defense helped us to find easy baskets on the fastbreak and this broke the game open. We had many up and downs so far, a lot of downs, but the way we played tonight, with defense and ball circulation, showed we can be a very good team. We want to advance to the Top 16 and playing for the Italian title."
HUKIC, JASMIN
Union Olimpija
"I think we controlled the game in the first two quarters. I think our basketball was OK, with the right defense and choices. But then we have fallen down by more than 20 points. I think that some players have not given their maximum, especially on defense. And this is unacceptable for a team like Olimpija Ljubljana. It's like having two different souls inside the team. If we want to advance, we have to solve this problem."
