THE TAKE

Two teams with different goals in this Euroleague season will go against each other in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Union Olimpija hosts Caja Laboral in Group C on Thursday. Olimpija is still looking for its first win and must bounce back right away to rejoin the Top 16 race. Meanwhile, Laboral beat Maccabi Electra last week and aims to confirm its status as one of the top candidates to win competitive Group C. These teams faced each other in the 1994 Saporta Cup final, in which Olimpija lifted its only European trophy to date. Laboral, however, has won its last four games in Ljubljana, including a 90-91 triumph last season. Olimpija will be most concerned with stopping All-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter, a difference-making big man by any means. Splitter leads a very versatile Laboral frontcourt that also includes three-point bomber Mirza Teletovic, mobile forward Lior Eliyahu and 2.18-meter center Stanko Barac. Gasper Vidmar and Vladimir Golubovic have the tough mission of guarding Splitter - as well as trying to get him into foul trouble in what could be a key to this game. Teletovic will test his unlimited range against Uros Slokar, while Eliyahu has an interesting matchup against Edin Bavcic. With former Laboral playmaker Vlado Ilievski still sidelined, Dusan Djordjevic and Sani Becirovic are set to share the point guard duties for Olimpija - even though both players can share playing time on the floor. Jaka Klobucar will also see playing time at both guard spots, leaving more space Matt Walsh to provide the fireworks at the wings. Walsh comes off a 32-point effort against Maroussi last week. Walsh will be tested by the Laboral scorers, Brad Oleson, Chris Lofton and Carl English. Becirovic must use his experience against Tau playmaker Pau Ribas. Meanwhile, Klobucar and Djordjevic will see most of the minutes against Marcelo Huertas. Laboral relies on Fernando San Emeterio to do all the dirty work - double teams, long rebounds, clutch shooting - that turns a team from good to great. Laboral must feed Splitter down low to create double-team situations and open shots for English, Oleson and Teletovic. Olimpija must rely on Becirovic and Walsh to fight for a very important home win. This game has all the signs – just like last year – of turning into a big thriller at Tivoli Arena.

Quotes Head Coaches

ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"We await one of the best teams in the Euroleague, but this does not mean we don't want to beat them. We are in a position where victory is the only thing we have to think about going into this game. We had some problems with injuries in the past few days. In our Adriatic League game against Zagreb, our captain Saso Ozbolt injured his ankle and will be out for at least 10 days. [Pawel] Kikowski and [Jaka] Klobucar will have to step up and replace him for the time being. Caja Laboral plays very fast basketball. They play a little bit slower in their away games, but they will run the fastbreaks if they have the opportunity. We must stop their fastbreaks with aggressive defense. We are still making a lot of mistakes when it comes to two-on-two situations. I believe we will have a lot of problems with Tiago Splitter, who moves very quickly when it comes to pick-and-roll situations. Our centers are at the moment too slow for him. We are working on this at practices and hopefully things will change. The defense will have to be on a much higher level if we want to win this game. We don't want ups and downs in defense when it comes to situations when one or two players lack aggressiveness in defense. We lack of help and rotation in defense and that is one of the main reasons for our poor performance in our last games."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
"I respect Olimpija very much, they’ve got a very good roster and they know how to play. Every team from the former Yugoslavia counts on players that, despite the fact that some of them are not very well known, have a lot of talent. They are smart on the court and fight all game long. Even though they lost the first two games, they are still alive and their target is to make it to the Top 16. They are not going to give up because of the last two games’ outcome. We know it will be tough. We have played there several times in the past and it was always very difficult. They have more fans this season, we could see it against Maroussi. They count on very loyal supporters, so it will make it even more difficult. They have big heart when playing, they fight for every loose ball and have several talented players. Becirovic is the best example, while Matt Walsh, who already knows the Spanish competition, is a great shooter, able to score even against a great defender. Slokar can play inside-outside, Golubovic is also a great player, etc, etc. In addition, the coach is a great one. He has done a great job with this team so far."

"It is more than obvious that we didn't get the result we wanted against Maroussi. It will be much harder now when we are zero for two in the Euroleague. We are playing at home in Tivoli Arena and we believe that if we play like we know to, then we can beat anyone. I expect that we will give our best, play like we know to and then at the end win the game."
OLESON, BRAD
Caja Laboral
"It’s getting better day by day. I feel more comfortable in the team now. My ankle is getting better and now it’s time to adjust to the team and feel better. I’ve been practicing for two weeks and I know I cannot expect much at this point. I need to work my way in, and hopefully I will be back to normal in one month or so. I’m on a big club and it’s not about scoring, it’s all about winning, and winning championships. This week is difficult. The Euroleague is new to me so every game is new to me, every country plays in different style. I’m pretty excited to go to Slovenia and play another Euroleague team."
Marcelinho Huertas - Caja LaboralCaja Laboral improved to 2-1 in Group C by holding off Union Olimpija 76-82 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Thursday night. Caja Laboral had history in its favor having won the in its last four visits to Tivoli Arena this game proved no different as Dusko Ivanovic's team used a key 0-7 run in the closing moments to earn the victory. Guard Marcelo Huertas led Caja Laboral with 21 points, 4 of them coming in that decisive late run. Brad Oleson seconded him with 12 points and Tiago Splitter scored 11 points and made a clutch block in the closing seconds to ensure the win. Matt Walsh had another great scoring game for the home team. The shooting guard drove fearless to the basket time and time again and in the process racked up 27 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Vladimir Golubovic went 5 for 5 from two-point range for 10 points in addition to playing great defense on the Caja Laboral big men.

Fernando San Emeterio drew first blood for Caja Laboral by getting position in the post for 2 points and adding a free throw off a foul by Walsh to open the game. Jaka Klobucar answered with a short jumper on the baseline. Huertas hit a jump shot moments later and Carl English drained a three-pointer for Caja Laboral. Edin Bavcic tied it at 8-8 with a layup and Sani Becirovic nailed a three-pointer to grab the lead for Olimpija. English scored inside, but Gaspar Vidmar made his third bucket on a nice move in the post. San Emeterio got out on the break and made a tough layup. Becirovic matched him moments later with a drive of his own. Splitter punched back for Caja Laboral in the post, but Becirovic fed a no-look pass to Vidmar for a dunk as both teams were clicking on offense. Splitter struck again on a nice pass from Mirza Teletovic and got a basket-plus-foul. Splitter returned the favor moments later assisting Teletovic for the three at the top of the key. English fed Splitter for a nice left-handed hook to send Caja Laboral up 20-26.

Uros Slokar made a shot in the paint to start the second period for Olimpija as the home side increased its defensive intensity. Oleson broke the quiet spell with a three-pointer that once again ignited Caja Laboral. Bavcic tipped in a miss, but Stanko Barac came off the visitors’ bench to slam home a nice pass by Micov and moments later add a jumper. Olimpija had to call for time when Pau Ribas nailed a three-pointer to cap a 2-10 run and give Caja Laboral a 10-point lead. Out of the timeout, Walsh stepped up and hit a huge three-pointer. But Barac fed Micov this time around for a layup, and Caja Laboral went up 29-41 on a three-pointer by Oleson. Caja Laboral’s defense shut down Olimpija’s attack and the visitors extended their lead on 2 foul shots from Oleson. Walsh finally responded by swishing a three, but his team still was down 32-43 at the half.

Matt Walsh - Union OlimpijaWalsh came out firing from the break and started the second half with 5 quick points. First the Olimpija wing got 3 points on a tough layup plus a foul from Teletovic, and then he stole the ball and made a hard reverse layup in transition. Teletovic hit a pull-up jumper out of a Caja Laboral timeout, but Becirovic got a pretty scoop shot to fall. Staying aggressive, Walsh got 2 more points for the foul line to get within 41-45. Micov made a nice half-hook shot over Walsh in the post and Oleson drained an open three to push Caja Laboral back ahead by 9 points. Golubovic drove in for 2 and Walsh beat everyone down court to get another layup for his 16th point of the evening. Huertas responded with a layup and the scoreboard was stuck at 46-52 as both teams clamped down on the defensive end. Golubovic put in an offensive board to cut Olimpija’s deficit to just 3 points. Huertas answered with a big three-pointer, but Golubovic scored again in the post. Still Caja Laboral went into the fourth nursing a 52-56 advantage.

Golubovic sandwiched a three-pointer by San Emeterio with a pair of baskets inside to open the final period. Barac scored 4 points in a row on 2 foul shots and a dunk to force Olimpija head coach Jure Zdovc to call for time at 58-65. His team responded as Slokar used the glass and Walsh swished a baseline jumper to keep Olimpija close. Now it was coach Ivanovic’s turn to stop play and talk things over with his team. Slokar tied the game on basket-plus-foul and after another defensive stop, Walsh pushed the ball and made a layup to grab a 67-65 lead for Olimpija with 4:37 to play. Splitter knotted the score with 2 foul shots, and the center then hit Teletovic for a layup. Bavcic nailed a three from the wing as the lead swung back in Olimpija’s favor, 70-69. Walsh drove in for a bucket, but English answered with a three-pointer and Huertas hit a floater to give Caja Laboral a 3-point lead with 2:17 to play and make Olimpija take a timeout. Huertas then used a great head fake to get to the rim for 2 more to cap a 0-7 Caja Laboral run. Walsh got 2 points from the foul line and Olimpija started to foul intentionally to extend the game. After Oleson went 1 for 2 from the line, Walsh drove in for tough layup to get to 76-78. Huertas hit 2 foul shots and Splitter got a key block against Becirovic to seal the 76-82 win.

Head Coaches

ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
“We had an opportunity to beat Caja Laboral, but we let it slip away. After a very poor first half, we were able to tie the score in the second part, but in the last decisive minutes we were not able to stop the shots of our rival. Caja Laboral made some tough shots while we did not have a good night from behind the three-point line. We still have a long way to go to reach the level of the Euroleague.”
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Caja Laboral
“Even though Union Olimpija had lost their first 2 games, we knew that this game would not be easy. Union Olimpija is a team that fights to the very last second, and they demonstrated this again tonight. Fortunately for us, in the last 2 minutes we made some tough shots and that let us get ahead. We had a very good first half, while in the third quarter my players began to play too selfishly and we suffered as a team a bit. This is a very important win for us because it gives us some peace of mind in the coming weeks.”

Players

OZBOLT, SASO
Union Olimpija
“Losses like these are very hard to swallow. We were close, but in the end the quality of Caja Laboral made the difference. In the last minutes we should have played with more heart. We have to keep our heads up now that the season has begun and there is enough time to improve.”
TELETOVIC, MIRZA
Caja Laboral
“We have played so many times in the Tivoli Arean that we know very well what is in store for us. At the beginning we played pretty well, while in the third quarter Union Olimpija fought back. Above all Matt Walsh was very inspired. At the end we controlled the ball and stopped their outside shots and got the important 2 points.”
