THE TAKE

One week after stunning many by beating the defending champs, Lottomatica Roma will look to add another scalp to its collection when it hosts Real Madrid in the Italian capital. Roma used a big third-quarter run to take down Panathinaikos 85-67 last week as Allan Ray scored a season best 18 points. The result improved head coach Jasmin Repesa’s team to 2-6 this season and pushed it back into Top 16 contention. Meanwhile Madrid topped Fenerbahce at home by 10, but has not won on the road since Week 3. However the Spanish champs are still riding high with a 6-2 record and are now only one win out of first place. Madrid held on for an 89-83 win when these teams met earlier this season. Charles Smith scored a season-high 23 to lead Madrid, while Erazem Lorbek matched his career-best with 24 and Roko-Leni Ukic had 19 points and 8 assists for Roma. Despite injuries keeping some of the players expected to be forces for Roma on the sidelines, Lorbek and veteran Gregor Fucka have been solid inside and the team’s deep backcourt has taken turns shining as Roma has remained a tough team to beat. A win this week would thrust the side into sixth place. However Madrid is a serious Final Four contender and is among the few teams that can match with Roma’s deep perimeter. Ukic teams with Jon Stefansson, David Hawkins, Ray and Jacopo Giacheti to form the Roma backcourt, while Robert Gabini starts at forward. They will challenge Louis Bullock, Smith, Raul Lopez, Kerem Tunceri and Michalis Pelekanos. Hawkins’s defense will be important in trying to stop Smith, while Ukic could match up with Bullock in another telling duel. Inside Lorbek and Fucka will need all the help they can get to shut down Madrid’s star center Lazaros Papadopoulos, who anchors the Madrid frontline, with Felipe Reyes, Blagota Sekulic and Axel Hervelle helping out. Young Simone Bagnoli and veteran Alessandro Tonolli, who is hoping to play despite a thigh injury, figure to have important roles as well against the Madrid bigs. Despite Papadopolous’s skills, he has not found a way to dominate yet with Madrid and that could be Roma’s saving grace. If Lorbek and Fucka can handle the defensive duties, Roma can set the tone with its explosive guards, which they proved last week makes it a formidable side.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Against Panathinaikos we showed real team play and that is what we will need to do against Real Madrid. I still believe we can qualify for the Top 16, but we will need our fans' support. Real Madrid don't play every day in Rome against Lottomatica Roma and Lottomatica deserves to have more fans in our games. I hope we will have plenty of fans at our arena on Thursday and that they become our sixth man. From our part, we will do everything we can to have a strong and aggressive defense. Without that, you don't win, especially with a team that has great shooters."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"They are a team that was hard for us to beat at home, so we expect even a tougher game on the road. They have a good roster, with a lot of quality and experienced players. In the last games they are playing much better and in the last game they had a valuable win against such a powerful team as Panathinaikos. They started the Euroleague with three games on the road and that affected them, but now they are better. We will try to play a complete game and try to keep growing as a team."

Players

TONOLLI, ALESSANDRO
Lottomatica Roma
"Real Madrid is a great team but that shouldn't make us fear them. In Madrid, we played a great game and we could have won. Our recent wins against Panathinaikos and Udine have given us a boost in confidence. I think if we are able to play as we did against Panathinaikos we can play our game. We have to win at all costs."
SMITH, CHARLES
Real Madrid
"Lottomatica has changed a lot regarding the team we saw in the first leg, even though we have to remember they started with three road games and that is tough for any team. It will be a hard game against a quality team and whose virtue is experience and will receive us with extra motivation after a win against Panathinaikos. We will have to be tough on defense, play a good first quarter and maintain the pace from that moment until the final buzzer."
Roberto Gabini - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica Roma claimed a second major scalp in as many weeks and rejoined the Top 16 race in Group C by edging Real Madrid 69-64 at home in the Italian capital on Thursday night. Coupled with its win over previously unbeaten Panathinaikos a week earlier, Roma can boast victories over last season's Euroleague and ULEB Cup champions in a span of just eight days. Equally important, Roma improved its record to 3-6, tied with Chorale Roanne for sixth place in Group C. Meanwhile, Real Madrid dropped to 6-3 and is now third in this group. Roberto Gabini and Erazem Lorbek paced the winners each with 17 points. Louis Bullock had 11 points for Madrid while Kerem Tunceri, Alex Mumbru, Felipe Reyes and Charles Smith each added 10 for the guests. A three-pointer by Allan Ray gave Roma its biggest lead, 46-39, midway through the third quarter, but Hervelle and Bullock fueled a 3-14 run that Tunceri capped with a wild triple to put Madrid back ahead, 49-53, after 30 minutes. Roma rallied now, as a free throw by Jon Stefansson gave the hosts a 59-58 edge with 3 minutes to go. Gabini and Bullock traded triples while Reyes hit free throws for a 61-62 Real Madrid edge heading into the last minute. Ray's three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining gave Roma the lead for good and his pair of late free throws to extend it to 67-64, while Roko Leni-Ukic's game-ending dunk sent the winners off the court in style.

Jacopo Giachetti caught a pass from David Hawkins and scored on a drive to launch Roma's effort, but Madrid would have the much better start. Smith replied with a three-pointer right in front of the Madrid bench to ignite a 0-10 run that was capped by Axel Hervelle's bomb from the arc. Lorbek ended the Roma drought with a layup and Gabini dunked following a steal but Alex Mumbru and Smith responded with baskets to restore the eight-point Madrid advantage. Mumbru's three-ball gave the visitors a 9-19 lead yet the Romans showed the same resiliency that propelled them to victory against Panathinaikos. Hawkins immediately went baseline and dunked over Hervelle and the next trip down he passed up an open shot and fed Gabini down low. Lorbek then hit 3 consecutive layups as the hosts finished the first quarter on a 10-0 run to leave the game level at 19-19.

Felipe Reyes - Real MadridStefansson began the second quarter with a jumper in the lane as Roma took the lead for the second time in the game. Blagota Sekulic stopped the Madrid slide with a layup and Raul Lopez hit a short jumper as the Spanish champs went ahead again. Gabini put back an offensive rebound to level the score again, 23-23 and then buried a three-pointer from the left before Ukic made an uncontested left-handed layup at 28-23. When Stefansson hit a baseline jumper, Roma led 34-27 but a Smith three-pointer and Tunceri's 10-foot jumper with 5 seconds remaining trimmed the difference to 34-32 at halftime.

Roma reasserted itself after the break as Lorbek sank a pair of free throws and Gabini scored inside. Bullock took his first three-pointer and made it, but an impressive Gabini answered with another drive for a 40-35 Roma advantage. The hosts soon opened up a 46-39 lead when Ray drained a three-pointer with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter. Madrid battled back, though. A Hervelle put-back dunk was followed by a Reyes three-point play and a three-ball by Tunceri. Bullock then added a three-point play to cap an 11-0 run with a new Madrid lead, 46-50. Lorbek then made 3 of 4 at the line to steady Roma's nerves, but Tunceri nailed a three-pointer just before the end of the quarter to put Madrid in front at 49-53.

Allan Ray - Lottomatica RomaMumbru's three-point shot extended Madrid's lead to 7 points to start the fourth quarter, before Gregor Fucka and Lorbek responded with baskets and Ukic with free throws to close the gap at 55-56. Stefansson then put Roma back in front at 58-56 with a three-pointer. Neither team scored for almost 3 minutes until Bullock caught an inbounds pass by Smith and made a layup to tie the game. The hosts kept calm and earned two consecutive trips to the free throw line, but made just 1 of 4 attempts there. After Tunceri missed from long range, however, the outstanding Gabini connected from behind the arc to make it 62-58. Bullock replied with a three-ball of his own with 2 minutes to go, and after Reyes blocked a Gabini layup, he was fouled and made both free throws to seize a new Madrid lead at 62-63. Ray put Roma back in front with a three-pointer to ignite the crowd at the Palalottomatica and then Reyes made just 1 of 2 free throws at 65-64 with 33 seconds remaining. Next, Ray penetrated with the shot-clock winding down, was fouled by Hervelle and made both free throws for a 67-64 lead with 14.4 seconds left. After a timeout, Madrid got the ball to Bullock, but his game-tying three-point try rimmed out and Roma rebounded to seal a second consecutive upset victory.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"I am satisfied because we played a good game. I think Panathinaikos underestimated us, but Real Madrid came very prepared tonight. We lost lucidness two or three times in the game and against a team like Real Madrid you are punished, but we managed to react and battle for the win. The Top 16 is still far away and we will have to take it one game at a time."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"We lost this game in the first two quarters, we made many turnovers and that cannot be. I congratulate Roma for the win. They have merited the win. I hope to meet them again in the Top 16."

Players

LORBEK, ERAZEM
Lottomatica Roma
"We all played a great game tonight. It was a physical game, but all the knocks are forgotten with this win. We really needed a game like we had against Panathinaikos to make us react and to make us belief in our strength."
SMITH, CHARLES
Real Madrid
"In the Euroleague you can never relax, every game means something, even against the smaller teams. We lost the game in the last five or six minutes. We didn't really pick up the defense and they hit a lot of open shots towards the end. They got away with a win and we just have to go back to the drawing board."
