THE TAKE

Alba Berlin will look to advance to the next stage of Europe’s top competition for the first time in eight years on Thursday when the German champs host Union Olimpija at the o2 Arena in the German capital. Berlin controls its own fate and will reach the Top 16 with a win – with a remote possibility to finish Group C in third place too. Berlin would also be fourth if it loses as long as DKV Joventut loses as well. Olimpija, meanwhile, will finish the regular season in last place in the group. Berlin is coming off a big road win at Joventut that drastically improved its standing in the group. Immanuel McElroy was the hero with a Euroleague career-high 26 points on near-perfect shooting and 4 assists as he earned Week 9 MVP honors. Olimpija will look to end its Euroleague campaign on a high note. Thus far head coach Jure Zdovc’s squad has won only once this season – against Berlin. Big man Miha Zupan matched his Euroleague career-high with 19 points to lead Olimpija to a 77-69 win in November. Olimpija has changed a bit since then, with the biggest difference being then-starting playmaker Vlado Ilievski leaving the team, while Marko Milic has since returned from injury and this week guard Junior Harrington was signed. Berlin’s roster is mostly intact now that Julius Jenkins is back, although veteran center Patrick Femerling is sidelined with a knee injury. Berlin’s preparations were hampered as head coach Luka Pavicevic was absent for several days after his mother passed away. However the home team will surely try to win the game in her honor. Each team will look to take advantage of certain matchup advantages. For Alba, the experience that McElroy and Casey Jacobson bring to the wings is crucial against Olimpija’s younger Damjan Rudez, Frank Robinson and Jaka Klobucar. Similarly, with teenage playmaker and newcomer Harrington teaming with Saso Ozbolt in the backcourt, Berlin will enjoy an experience edge with Jenkins, Steffen Hamman And Rashad Wright. Meanwhile, 2.20-meter Mirza Begic will be tough for Berlin’s Adam Chubb to stop, while Vladimir Golubovic and Milic for a strong frontcourt that Ansu Sesau and Aleksandar Nadjfeji won’t have an east time stopping. Nevertheless, Berlin is likely to be more motivated and is the favorite to win at home, but Olimpija’s young squad won’t roll over making this one of six exciting games to watch on Thursday.

GAME NOTES

Alba Berlin
  • Shooting guard Casey Jacobsen has made multiple three-pointers in four straight Euroleague games and is shooting 47.8% from downtown over those games.
  • Small forward Immanuel McElroy earned Euroleague weekly MVP honors for the first time in his career last week after scoring a Euroleague career-high 26 points on near-perfect shooting and dishing 4 assists against DKV Joventut.

That team took home the bronze medal. Current teammate Mirza Begic (Slovenia) and Damjan Rudez (Croatia) as well as Phillip Zwiener (Germany) of Alba Berlin also took part in the tourney.
  • Guard Junior Harrington could make his Euroleague debut for Olimpija this week.

Quotes Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Winning in Badalona only was the first step. To reach the Top 16 we have to take the second step on Thursday against Union Olimpija. Not only judged by our loss in Ljubljana in the first round, they are a tough opponent. They lost in Istanbul as well as in Rome only after overtimes and they almost beat Tau. Under their new coach, Jure Zdovc, with a new American point guard and with Marko Milic back from his injury, they will look for a restart after their unlucky first part of the season. Therefore we will have to be aware and prepare for this game very well. I expect great fan support in this important game. Playing infront of our huge home crowd has given us extra energy and I hope we can benefit from our great fan support again against Union Olimpija."
ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"Nobody likes finishing last, so we are going to Berlin to win. We know that it will be tough since Alba is playing well, especially at home. Alba playing at home or on the road is two different teams. At home they play organized, with clear ideas and smart. We will have a new player with us, Harrington, who will probably make the difference in our style. We have played the last few games without a playmaker and finally we will be able to play with one."

Players

JENKINS, JULIUS
Alba Berlin
"We have learned that in the Euroleague there are only tough teams and that everybody is able to beat everybody. So we just gotta come out, be focused and get a win. Ljubljana already is out of the race for the Top 16 and I am not sure what they have going on, but I know what we need to do: We need this win to go through to the next round. So all we need to do is to concentrate on us."
HARRINGTON, JUNIOR
Union Olimpija
"The game in Berlin will be introductory for me. I will be able to see how much my teammates know about the game and they will see what kind of stuff I am made of. From what I have seen in two practices, the team is good, with quality players, so I think that this season results are not the real face of this team."
Vladimir Golubovic - Union OlimpijaAlba Berlin reached the Euroleague Top 16 for the first time in club history despite losing its final Group C match 67-59 at home against Union Olimpija. Berlin dropped to 4-6 in the regular season and was forced to wait after its final whistle to watch Tau Ceramica beat DKV Joventut and secure Alba's berth in the next round. Joventut also finished 4-6 but Alba won both their games together and therefore the first tie-break between them. Alba became the second club in German history to advance from the Euroleague's first round after Bamberg did it in 2005-06. Olimpija had already been eliminated from the Top 16 but improved to 2-8 with both victories against Alba. A 10-0 first-quarter run gave Alba early control of the game, but the hosts struggled to close during the middle quarters. Olimpija used a 2-8 spurt to lead by a point at halftime and a 1-9 late third-quarter surge for a two-point lead it never gave up. Comng off the bench, Vladimir Golubovic led the winners with 21 points on 7-for-7 two-point shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds. Miha Zupan scored 12 of his 14 points in the decisive 5-18 run spanning the third and fourth quarters. Immanuel McElroy paced Alba with 13 points while Adam Chubb added 12. Three-point shooting proved key to the result as Olimpija canned 9 of 19 attempts from deep while Alba made only 2 of 10.

Mirza Begic opened the scoring after a spin move in the lane. But Chubb answered with a jumper at the other end. Begic's foul shot made it 2-3 before Alba went on an early run. Begic initially blocked a shot but Union turned the ball over and Casey Jacobsen drained a triple from the left corner. McElroy came off a pick to knock down a three-point shot of his own and Ansu Sesay's jumper completed the 10-0 run for a 12-3 lead. But Olimpija went to its big men to get back into the game. Begic hit inside to stop the run and Golubovic put back an offensive rebound and hit another easy basket and the lead was just 12-9. Aleksandar Nadjfeji cut into the lane for a layup but Saso Ozbolt hit a triple and Golubovic's foul shot made it 14-13. Nadjfeji drove the baseline for a dunk to finish the first quarter with Alba up 16-13.

Immanuel McElroy - Alba BerlinMarko Milic used the glass on a layup for the first basket of the second quarter. And Olimpija knotted it at 18-18 on a triple by Damjan Rudez. Chubb hit two foul shots and then Julius Jenkins blew by his defender and threw down a powerful dunk to make it 22-18. Rudez though answered again with a three-point shot and his long two-point jumper left Union down just 24-23. Rashad Wright hit a tough driving layup and Jenkins got a couple lucky bounces on a mid-range jumper to give Alba a 28-23 advantage. Mirza Sarajlija answered with a long two and then back-to-back triples - the second Jasmin Hukic's long buzzer-beater which went off the glass - sent Olimpija to the locker-room ahead 30-31.

Chubb opened the second half after a fine pass from Wright and McElroy hit two straight baskets, the second a break-away layup after a Sesay block to make it 36-31 as Alba was picking up its defensive intensity. Junior Harrington's jumper finally got Olimpija on the board and Golubovic's free throw cut the deficit to 36-35. After a long two by Golubovic, Chubb answered with a follow dunk to make it 40-37. Two McElroy free throws pushed the margin to 42-38. But Zupan hit a big triple from the right corner. Zupan then came back down and nailed a three-point shot from the left wing to give Union the lead 43-44. Jenkins surprisingly missed two foul shots before Golubovic hit three from the foul line for a 43-47 lead, finishing the 1-9 run with Nadjfeji's inside layup off the glass pulling Alba within 45-47 going into the fourth.

Harrington pushed the gap to 45-50 with a three-point shot to start the final period. After a Jenkins layup, Zupan continued his hot stretch by hitting a jumper and converting the three-point play. Zupan then drained another trey from the right wing for a 47-56 advantage, completing the 5-18 run spanning the final two periods. Jenkins made a free throw to stop the run and Chubb converted a three-point play to bring Alba within 51-56. Zupan however answered with a long two from the left side before Chubb, Jacobsen and Wright all made just one of two foul shots in trimming the deficit to 54-58. And Golubovic finished a three-point play to re-establish a 7-point gap - 54-61. Wright's three-point play on a tough layup brought Alba within 57-62. But Hukic nailed a big triple and Golubovic's offensive rebound put-back finished off the night.

Head Coaches

PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I want to congratulate my players on having reached the Top 16. It came down as a result of a hard and dedicated work from the first training camp of the season. It was a huge challenge in this tough group and I congratulate my players on handling this challenge in a very good way. The fact that we lost our last game at home leaves a little bit of bitter taste in the mouth. However, before this game we knew that our win in Badalona most likely had been the deciding one and so it was. We did not reach the Top 16 by being lucky, but by beating strong teams like Rome, Fenerbahce and Joventut. The game tonight we, of course, did not play properly. Whether it was the burden of the importance of the game or the knowledge that so many people showed up to support us could be one of the factors. But we also faced a very good opponent tonight and the reason for the victory finally lies in the good game they had tonight in Berlin. The deciding moments of the game were in the second half, when I believe we could not find a good way to score. It turned into situations, when we could not even hit our free-throws. On the other side the opponent hit some very difficult shots."
ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"First of all, I want to congratulate Luka and his team for moving to the next round. I am very happy for him, the organization and for the great fans of Alba. It was a great pleasure to play in such a gym and such and atmosphere. We knew that Alba would be under pressure and I found a way to motivate my players. In the last games we had big problems playing without a point guard. When we brought Junior Harrington two days ago, the atmosphere in the team changed completely. The other players started smiling again and started to believe in themselves. They played a great game today with good defense and with some luck we won in the end, which will help us to improve."

Players

CHUBB, ADAM
Alba Berlin
"We came out ready and really wanted to win this game, but they just came out better tonight and made the big shots. Of course, we missed Patrick Femerling today a lot against their talented big guys, but usually we manage such situations better like one week ago in Badalona. Tonight it did not work out for us, but at least we were lucky to advance to the next round despite the loss."
GOLUBOVIC, VLADIMIR
Union Olimpija
"We did not start the game well, but found our rhythm in time to tie the game by halftime. After the break, we did not have enough concentration in the first minutes, but then reacted well, playing with more energy and good defense, which was enough for our deserved win. For me it was important to go out of the Euroleague with a win. But we will have to forget that already tomorrow having so many important games in the Adriatic League ahead of us."
