The Take

Two basketball giants meet again in the Game of the Week. CSKA leads the league in performance index rating (109.4 per game) and Madrid is second (101.3), so expect a major clash of talents. This marks their 38th meeting, including Euroleague finals in 1963, 1965 and 1969, but they have not met outside of the Top 16 since 2008. CSKA relies on a pair of top-ten scorers, Nando De Colo (18.3 ppg., second overall) and Milos Teodosic (14.2 ppg., eighth overall). With Aaron Jackson still out, both De Colo and Teodosic will lead CSKA against Sergio Rodriguez and youngster Luka Doncic. Madrid is without Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernandez, so Jaycee Carroll, Jeffery Taylor and Jonas Maciulis will see bigger roles in the meantime. None of them will have it easy against Nikita Kurbanov, Cory Higgins and Vitaly Fridzon. Andrey Vorontsevich did not play in his team's last two games. If he remains unavailable, Kyle Hines, Joel Freeland and Demetris Nichols will see extended playing time against Gustavo Ayon (11.2 ppg.). Madrid is deeper under the boards with Trey Thompkins, Andres Nocioni and Felipe Reyes offering hustle at power forward and two big bodies, Willy Hernangomez and Mo Ndour, at center.

Quotes Head Coaches

ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow

"For us it is a very important game, we face the defending champion of Europe. We need the voice and applause of every fan and I hope we will have a full gym that will push us forward to victory. We play in a very competitive group, so every game here has big influence on the standings."

LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"We play against a very tough opponent on the road. We have not been able to beat CSKA in Moscow since I have been coaching the team. They always have phyiscal, talented rosters and are always a candidate to win the Euroleague. CSKA is always strong at home. I don't know how many home losses they had in the last four or five years but they cannot be too many. We know that we must play a very good game if we want to win. Basketball is a team sport and if I had to talk about CSKA right now, the mobility of their big man - Nichols, Hines, Vorontsevich, Freeland - worries me more than their low-post game. They have two key players, De Colo and Teodosic, who generate 60% of their offense, shoot more than 10 three-pointers per game, draw fouls and are dangerous when they drive or pass the ball. These two players allow the other players two grow: Hines, Freeland, Vorontsevich, depending on what they are able to generate. We must try to stop that source of game generation knowing that other players can score and play one-on-one. They play a lot of pick-and-rolls and have other good shooters like Fridzon and Kurbanov. We know that we will play against one of the big favorites to win the Euroleague."

Players

HINES, KYLE
CSKA Moscow
"It is a very important game for both sides. We need to start with a good home-court victory because it is crucial for the whole Top 16 in our very tough group to play well at home. Real is a very experienced and talented team, a defending champion, so the game will be difficult. But we are up to the test, up to the challenge; we need this victory, especially after last week’s loss."
NOCIONI, ANDRES
Real Madrid
"It is always difficult to go against CSKA on the road and get back home with a win. We have to do a good job and try to do that. We all have to step up, as we have some injured players and must give our best to make our team better. I am beginning to play better, I don't feel pain and am more comfortable. The game against CSKA is a great opportunity for us to start winning on the road and be able to reach as high as possible in the standings. It won't be easy but we have to try and get better in every game. We have to try to control the game and stop Nando De Colo, who is a decisive player for them. We have a great team and they have their injuries, too, so our own injuries will not be an excuse."

Teodosic, De Colo lead CSKA past Madrid

In a big showdown between Turkish Airlines Euroleague giants, CSKA Moscow registered its first win in Group F by downing reigning champion Real Madrid 95-81 in the Russian capital on Thursday. Both teams now have 1-1 records. Nando De Colo led the winners with 28 points and 7 assists. Milos Teodosic added 23 points and 7 assists, Kyle Hines had 14 points on 7-of-7 two-point shooting, while Andrey Vorontsevich scored 11 for CSKA. K.C. Rivers led Madrid with 23 points on 5-of-7 three-point shooting, Gustavo Ayon added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Luka Doncic had 12 points and Sergio Rodriguez dished 13 assists for the visitors. Ayon and Rivers shined early to give Madrid a 10-16 lead, but Teodosic and Vorontsevich stepped up to help CSKA to a 22-20 lead after 10 minutes. Hines and De Colo took over early in the second quarter to boost the hosts' margin to 37-30. Doncic struck three times from downtown to bring Madrid within 42-41, but Teodosic and De Colo led CSKA to a 50-41 halftime advantage. Madrid found a go-to guy in Rivers, who had 12 third-quarter points, but De Colo and Joel Freeland helped CSKA keep a 71-64 margin after three quarters. De Colo and Teodosic stepped up to seal the outcome at 90-72 with three minutes remaining.

First quarter: CSKA fires back, gets the lead

Vitaly Fridzon got CSKA going with a one-handed jumper in the lane, as Madrid struggled to score early. Ayon stepped up with a jump hook and soon added a layup for a 2-4 Madrid lead. Joel Freeland picked up a good pass from De Colo for a backdoor dunk and soon added an off-balance basket to give CSKA a 6-4 lead. Rivers struck from downtown and a tip-in by Trey Thompkins set a 6-9 Madrid edge. Milos Teodosic scored around the basket, but Rivers erased it with a fast break layup before a dunk by Ayon forced CSKA to call timeout at 8-13. Higgins scored in penetration, but Rivers bettered that with a triple. Sergio Rodriguez shined with a driving layup, but Teodosic found De Colo for consecutive backdoor baskets to bring CSKA within 14-18. Andrey Vorontsevich followed free throws with a jump hook, however an alley-oop slam by Jeffery Taylor put Madrid back ahead, 18-20. Vorontsevich hit a mid-range jumper and Teodosic made free throws for a 22-20 CSKA edge after 10 minutes.

Second quarter: De Colo shines as CSKA soars

Jaycee Carroll hit a one-handed jumper in the lane that a red-hot Vorontsevich improved on with a three-pointer. Mo Ndour and Kyle Hines traded dunks and free throws by Taylor brought Madrid within 27-26. De Colo stepped up with back-to-back baskets that caused Madrid to call timeout at 31-26. Rodriguez tried to change things with a driving layup and Hines scored around the basket. Ayon returned to the floor and immediately delivered with a couple of offensive rebounds and a put-back layup to keep Madrid within 33-30. De Colo found space for an uncontested layup and another close basket by Hines made it a 7-point game. Luka Doncic shined with a three-pointer, but Fridzon immediately answered from downtown and a tip-in by an unstoppable Hines boosted CSKA's lead to 42-33. Ayon scored again and Doncic buried consecutive triples to bring Madrid within 1. Teodosic joined the three-point shootout and got help from De Colo to restore a 50-41 CSKA lead at halftime.

Third quarter: Rivers keeps Madrid’s hopes alive

Rivers buried a corner triple immediately after the break, but De Colo quickly answered with a baseline jumper and Freeland added a layup to make it a double-digit game, 54-44. Jonas Maciulis made free throw,s but De Colo nailed a three-pointer in transition. Rivers scored again and again, but Madrid struggled to get Rodriguez involved due to Nikita Kurbanov's great on-the-ball defense. De Colo struck from downtown and a fast break layup by Demetris Nichols gave CSKA a 62-50 lead. Thompkins buried his trademark three-pointer from the right corner and Rivers erased Freeland's jump hook with an acrobatic basket that gave Madrid hope at 64-55. Ayon rolled off a high post pick for an easy basket, but Teodosic restored CSKA’s 10-point lead. Rivers sank another one from beyond the arc before Fridzon and Ayon traded baskets. A layup by Maciulis got Madrid as close as 69-64. A layup by De Colo fixed the score at 71-64.

Fourth quarter: Teodosic, De Colo dominate

Vorontsevich shined with a put-back basket early in the quarter and Hines ignited the crowd with a big block on Taylor. Andres Nocioni stepped up with a three-point play and Doncic bettered Hines's power layup with his own basket-plus-foul to bring Madrid within 75-70. De Colo rescued CSKA with a mid-range jumper and soon added a bomb from way downtown, which prompted Madrid to call timeout at 80-70 with over six minutes left. Teodosic joined the three-point shootout and added a driving layup that broke the game open. Felipe Reyes made free throws - his first points, which Hines erased with a close basket. Madrid struggled to score when it mattered most and a three-pointer by Teodosic sealed the outcome at 90-72 with three minutes left. Madrid kept trying, but CSKA kept a big margin until the final buzzer.

Head Coaches

ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"First, I would like to say Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it today – Russians, Serbs, others. Thanks to the fans who filled the gym tonight, who supported us – the game is meaningless without them and players feel their support on the floor. Congratulations to the players, we played better and deserved to win. We were more dedicated to defense in the second half, we forced the opponents to 17 turnovers, the difference in rankings was 113-79. But the numbers don’t reflect our defensive effort. Somebody can look at the boxscore and say that it was De Colo and Teodosic who decided the outcome. They did play well. But others, who did not score much, also deserve to be praised. For example, Kurbanov was our defensive cornerstone as well as Nichols, they rebounded, deflected, switched, denied. It was obvious how we missed Vorontsevich, who helped a lot both on defense and offence. And we can mention many. There were some moments when we allowed our opponents to score easy baskets, and in our Top 16 group every rebound, every point is crucial. This is why I took timeout in the last minute, this is what I was saying to the team. We have 12 more final games on this stage."
LASO, PABLO
Real Madrid
"Congratulations to CSKA, they played more solid for 40 minutes. It is very difficult to win here if you make 17 turnovers. We had a moment in the game when the score was 75-70 and Nocioni shot an open three. But he missed, we made mistakes and let the game slip away. Still, I repeat, our opponents played 40 solid minutes and we played up-and-down."

Players

DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"I think [the most important part] was to play defense. We know they have very good players who can make lots of things on the court. We needed to play defense and play together; it what we missed in Khimki. So no we need to keep working on it. I just tried to read the game. We practice hard every day. I just do my job. "
RIVERS, K.C.
Real Madrid
"When two big teams play like today it is important to make less mistakes. So the best team won tonight. We made a lot of mistakes offensively, defensively and mentally - especially in the third and fourth quarters – we let the game turn around. CSKA played excellent the whole game."
