THE TAKE

Two Euroleague classic teams in recent years face each other in Group A, as Le Mans welcomes Cibona on Thursday. Le Mans registered an 84-79 road loss at Unicaja in its opener, while Cibona upset Maccabi Electra 81-79 in Zagreb. Cibona has not won its opening two Euroleague games since the 1996-97 season, when it beat Estudiantes and Charleroi to move up to 2-0. Meanwhile, Le Mans only won one Euroleague home game last season - but it was against Cibona, 100-87. Both teams completely renewed their roster for this new Euroleague season. Coach J.D. Jackson, a former Le Mans player, has taken over on the sidelines and entrusted his team to floor general in Brian Chase, with up-and-coming playmaker Antoine Diot as his backup. Chase will have a strong test against Earl Calloway, while Vedran Princ and even combo guard Davor Kus will take turns as Cibona's floor general. Kus will also have the chance to test his scoring skills against Dewarick Spencer. Stopping Spencer, however, will be crucial for Cibona. His matchup against Rawle Marshall, who had an outstanding game against Maccabi, will be one of the keys to this game. Marshall can play at both wing spots and is virtually unguardable in one-on-one situations, so expect Le Mans to use a zone defense, especially if it opts to use a big lineup with David Bluthenthal at small forward. Branimir Longin can also help Cibona with his driving skills and experience. Meanwhile, Bluthenthal is set to offer his unlimited range and outstanding scoring skills. Cibona has the right man to stop him in Marin Rozic, an all-around defender due to his intensity and versatility. Le Mans got stronger in the paint this season with Joao Paulo Batista, shot-blocking ace Pape Badiane and a much-improved Alain Koffi, ready to enter the prime of his career. Badiane and Koffi provide the kind of athleticism than Cibona's frontcourt lacks. Nikola Prkacin, however, has a great set of post skills against a foul-prone center like Koffi. Luksa Andric can open the court with his nice shooting range, while Jared Homan is a blue-collar center, ready to battle against Badiane and Batista. Le Mans needs to play physical and to get its frontcourt involved, as it can create double-team situation that would give Spencer more chances to hit outside shots. Meanwhile, Cibona has to play the way it did against Maccabi, with aggressive defense and Kus, Marshall and Prkacin as its references on offense. Expect a balanced and intense game where the team that fights hardest should win.

GAME QUOTES

Le Mans
  • Le Mans ended a 13-game Euroleague losing streak when it beat Cibona 100-87 for its first win of the season last year. That was the only triple-digit score for Le Mans in its Euroleague history.
  • Le Mans held its opponents to 42 points as it remained undefeated in the French League by beating Vichy over the weekend. The final score was 70-42.
  • Scoring threat Dewarick Spencer is averaging nearly 4.5 more points per game at home than on the road in his Euroleague career. Spencer has averaged 20.2 points per game at home and just 15.7 on the road.
Cibona
  • Cibona was the only team in the Euroleague to have two 20-point scorers in the opening week of the season. Davor Kus led the way with 23 points and Rawle Marshall netted 20.
  • Guard Davor Kus led his team in scoring last week with 23 points against Maccabi Electra. It was Kus’s first 20-point game since he scored 23 in week 2 last season against Cibona.
  • Guars Robert Troha will be making his Euroleague debut when he steps on the floor against Le Mans.

Quotes Head Coaches

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"This is a very important home game for us against one of our direct rivals for the Top 16. After their impressive home win against Maccabi, Cibona will definitely be coming here with a lot of confidence and motivation. After our good showing in Malaga last week, we hope to make the next step by getting a home win. The team is confident and very excited and so are our fans. It should be an exciting evening here in Le Mans."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"I have been watching Le Mans in the French championship, and I saw their game against Unicaja in round one and although it is a completely new team it still has the same stile as almost all French teams, which means they are a very strong and athletic team. Le Mans plays really quick in offense and defense and we have to remain concentrated for the whole 40 minutes to be able to control the game. We have to try to take our first away victory in this year's Euroleague. We had some problems with injuries in the past, but I hope that we will have all the players ready."

Players

BATISTA, JOAO PAULO
Le Mans
"It's really a huge game! First Euroleague home game. We have to use all that we have including fans with a sold out arena! We'll do all that we can to win this important game afteer having shown in Malaga that we were present. The whole team is extremely motivated, focused on this game. Everybody is ready to sacrifice himself and give all that he gets to win."
ANDRIC, LUKSA
Cibona
"I do not have pleasant memories from last year's visit to Le Mans, but I think this time it will be much better. We still haven't watched the tape but I know French teams with their athletic centers and we will have to make a big impact under the baskets if we want to win."
Nikola Prkacin - CibonaCroatian powerhouse Cibona survived a fourth-quarter comeback by Le Mans to pick up an important 54-58 road victory and stay unbeaten in Group A. Cibona is now 2-0 and tied with Olympiacos for first place in the group, while Le Mans fell to 0-2. The hosts trailed for most of the game, but managed to put up a huge 13-0 run to take their first lead at 52-51 with 1:23 to go. However, misses and turnovers on the next two possessions deflated the home crowd and gave Cibona the means to seal the victory from the free throw line. Point guard Earl Calloway led Cibona with 19 points and 5 assists and made 4 key free throws with 10 seconds left. Big man Nikola Prkacin dominated the paint, making all his 8 shots from the field and scoring 13 of his 17 points in the first half to help Cibona build an 18-29 lead. Rawle Marshall added 11 points for the winners and hit the decisive free throws that put Cibona in front with 25 seconds to go. Joao Paulo Batista came off the bench to lead Le Mans with 21 points, scoring all but 2 of them in a monstrous second half. No other Le Mans player reached double figures. The hosts were hurt by poor long-distance shooting as they went 0 for 12 shooting beyond the arc. Cibona was not much better, making just 2 of 14, but all 6 points counted in the end.

David Bluthenthal didn't need more than 10 seconds to get the Le Mans home crowd going with a mid-rang jumper from the right baseline. Both teams struggled on offense early, exchanging turnovers and missed shots, as the rims didn't seem to like the ball, spitting it out on both ends. Indeed, Cibona didn't score in the first five-and-a-half minutes, until Marshall hit a three-pointer to make it even at 3-3. Alain Koffi split two free throws and then powered in a tough fade-away jumper to give Le Mans a 6-3 lead. Cibona's point guard, Calloway, answered by feeding Prkacin for an easy two and by making a three-point play himself for a 6-8 edge to the visitors. Neither team could buy a basket outside the paint, as even Bluthental, usually a reliable shooter, missed a couple open opportunities. The Calloway-Prkacin combination worked once again for Cibona to give the visitors a 6-10 lead after the first quarter.

Alain Koffi - Le Mans Prkacin found another easy bucket to open the second period. Brian Chase answered with a runner in the lane for Le Mans, but Marin Rozic was wide open on the other end to make a layup-plus-free throw for Cibona. Le Mans was a disastrous 3-for-20 after another Bluthental miss, so he decided to drive on the next possession for an easy left hook. But it was another player, Prkacin, who dominated the second quarter with an array of left hooks, as no Le Mans player could stop the veteran Cibona center inside. Le Mans also started working the ball inside, and got some points from the free throw line as a result. Nonetheless, a double-teamed Prkacin fed Luksa Andric for an open three-pointer at the other end. Dewarick Spencer flew past Cibona's defence for an acrobatic lay-up, but it was once again Prkacin who scored the last points of the half to make it a double-digit advantage, 18-29, for Cibona at intermission

Batista went to work for Le Mans to start the second half. The big man was a perfect 3 of 3 from the field to spark an 8-4 run by Le Mans that forced Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic to call a timeout at 26-33. Cibona answered by going to their big guy, too, and Prkacin made up for a turnover with another left-handed baby hook. Bluthenthal found space for a shot in the lane and Batista added a free throw before Calloway took over with consecutive layups to reestablish a double-digit lead. Batista converted on another power move inside, and though Marshall came through with a tough jumper, Le Mans was picking it up on the defensive end, forcing Cibona into consecutive turnovers. Unfortunately for the home fans, Le Mans kept missing everything outside the paint, though Antoine Diot's reverse layup cut the difference 33-41 after 30 minutes of play.

Spencer got Le Mans closer with an easy fastbreak layup before Calloway found Prkacin for another left hook. Batista tipped it in to make it 37-43, but Calloway responded with another drive. Marshall and Batista exchanged baskets before Vedran Vukusic copied Prkacin with a lefty hook. Next, Calloway punished some defensive pressure by dribbling for a layup that was worth Cibona's biggest lead of the second half, 39-51 with 5 minutes to go. Een if it didn't seem so right then, Cibona was in for a battle. Le Mans refused to give up as Batista used the glass for a basket and Koffi nailed 2 free throws, Chase forced a turnover before Spencer made a tough shot and the free throw that came with it. Cibona struggled to set anything up on the offensive end, while Batista score 4 more points to complete an incredible 13-0 run that gave Le Mans its first lead of the game, 52-51 with 1:23 on the clock. Le Mans had two chances to add to that lead, but couldn't hit the shots, after which Marshall forced Koffi to foul him on a fastbreak. The athletic swingman calmly sank both to give Cibona a 52-53 with 25.5 seconds to go. Still Le Mans had a chance, but Spencer lost the ball to Prkacin, and Chase had to foul Calloway to stop the clock. He was given an intentional foul, so Calloway nailed both free throws, and then added another pair to increase the lead to 52-58 lead with too few seconds left for Le Mans to rally again.

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JOHN-DAVID
Le Mans
"We practiced the passing game and offensive teamwork all week, but at game time we showed very little patience and were very predictable. Cibona slowed us down with their physical defense and hopefully this will serve as a lesson to us. Otherwise I'm very happy with our defense and if we can find our confidence and teamwork on offense, we can certainly compete in the Euroleague. I never thought we'd finish this game at 0 for 12 from three-points. Hopefully it's just a one-time occurrence."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We played against a very good team. The players were serious and smart, especially at the end of the game. We didn't want to commit fouls. We lost attacks, so it was easier for us to play defense. We didn't want to play an easy game. We want to play in the Top 16. It's important to us to play in the Euroleague again next year."

Players

BATISTA, JOAO PAULO
Le Mans
"It was a very low-scoring game. In the first half we couldn't make any shots. We couldn't get the rhythm, the extra pass and couldn't get easy baskets. In the second half, it was better. We tried our best. It's the kind of game at home we need to win. We have to learn for our mistakes and work hard to be better."
HOMAN, JARED
Cibona
"It was a tough, physical game. We played hard. Both teams played good defense. For us, it was very important to beat Le Mans on the road. This victory is a good way towards the Top 16."
