THE TAKE

These teams face each other for the fifth time in less than two years. Unicaja has based its recent success on a strong frontcourt led by Fran Vazquez, Vladimir Golubovic and Will Thomas. ALBA must find answers on defense and may look to Leon Radosevic, Marko Banic and Jamel McLean to provide them with hustle and intensity. ALBA needs Cliff Hammonds and Alex Renfroe to win the point guard battles, setting a steady game tempo against Stefan Markovic and Jayson Granger. Unicaja has found a go-to guy in Ryan Toolson, who has been in sensational shape recently, creating his own shots and scoring seemingly at will. He will not have it easy against Reggie Redding and Alex King, but will get plenty of help from Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Kostas Vasileiadis. With Vojdan Stojanovski sidelined, Niels Giffey and Akeem Vargas will see extended playing time for ALBA in this interesting showdown.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"ALBA Berlin is champion of its country's supercup, is undefeated at 5-0 in the German League and beat the San Antonio Spurs, so this will be a tough opponent to defeat. If we don't respect them, we are making a mistake. It's a well-constructed, serious team that is tough in one-on-one defense and aggressive in the passing lanes. Offensively they are very vertical, playing almost five players on the perimeter. They'll be tough to beat but we have to concentrate on what we can control and play at our maximum capacity, as if we were going against the European champions. It wasn't easy beating Cedevita last week, it never is on the road, but we have to validate that victory in our home games, especially in a short regular season like the Euroleague's. We have to be solid on our court. I hope was are able to take advantage of the games we play before our own fans."
OBRADOVIC, SASA
ALBA Berlin
"CSKA, Maccabi and Unicaja are the leaders in our group. If you don’t come out with 100 percent or more you will have no chance against such great opponents. Our first game against Moscow was really no picture of us. We should be more calm in Malaga and get our self-confidence on defense. Malaga has a big tradition and it’s great to play there."

Players

TOOLSON, RYAN
Unicaja Malaga
"We've had a good start to the season, with four wins in the Spanish League and the Euroleague, but it's only the start and there's a lot to do still, especially this week. We have to beat ALBA Berlin, especially because we play at home, with the support of our fans, but we are facing a great team. It's clear that any Euroleague team can win on any court, home or away. I believe we have formed a good team, with lots of threats inside and outside. Fran Vazquez continues to be our rock, but in general our strength is we end up playing as a team. What's most important is that the team wins."
GIFFEY, NIELS
ALBA Berlin
"We will play in Malaga with the same expectations than in the beginning of the Euroleague season: We want to play our game style and be aggressive on the defensive end as a team. That makes it easier for us to create on offense as well."
