The Take

In a duel between sides seeking their first win of the season, Valencia Basket hosts Anadolu Efes Istanbul on Friday. The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Efes head coach Velimir Perasovic and new signing Justin Doellman, who led Valencia to the 2014 EuroCup crown. Valencia was led by Erick Green’s 22 points and a strong all-around effort by Guillem Vives in a Round 1 road loss at Khimki Moscow Region and Coach Txus Vidorreta will likely lean on his backcourt duo this week, too. They will encounter Efes scoring ace Erick McCollum and swingman Ricky Ledo, who combined for 43 points in their team’s loss to Real Madrid. Another key matchup will take place in the paint, where former EuroLeague Best Defender Bryant Dunston will try to keep Valencia’s Bojan Dubljevic in check. This will be the fifth meeting between the sides and first since 2010; each of the first four was won by the home team, which bodes well for Valencia. After committing 17 turnovers and missing 10 free throws in Round 1, Valencia will focus on improving in those areas, while Efes will try to better its 3-for-21 three-point shooting (14.3%) effort. If either team can accomplish that goal, it will put itself in the driver’s seat.

This meeting between Valencia and Efes will be their first in nearly seven years, and only their fifth ever. The previous four have all been won by the home team.

Valencia scored its most points in a EuroLeague game with 107 against Efes Pilsen on February 18, 2004.

Efes head coach Velimir Perasovic coached Valencia Basket for almost full four seasons, from 2011 to 2015, and guided the team to the 2014 EuroCup title. During his four-year stint there Perasovic coached four current Valencia players: Rafa Martinez, Bojan Dubljevic, Sam Van Rossom and Guillem Vives.

Newly signed Efes forward Justin Doellman played in Valencia from 2012 to 2014. He helped the team win the 2014 EuroCup title and was named 2014 EuroCup Finals MVP. During those two years Doellman was a teammate of three current Valencia players: Rafa Martinez, Bojan Dubljevic, and Sam Van Rossom.
