THE TAKE

Aris TT Bank welcomes Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv and its head coach Zvika Sherf to the Alexandrio Melathron in Thessaloniki, Greece, on Thursday in a game between two Group B teams hoping to move up a spot in the standings. Sherf is a basketball icon in Thessaloniki, where he has coached both PAOK and Aris, including taking Aris to the club’s first European title, the Saporta Cup in 1993. Both teams have already clinched spots in the Top 16, but would like to improve their chances of a better draw for that stage. The hosts scored a big road win at Efes Pilsen last week to improve to 7-6 and could overtake that team for fourth place – and a third-level seed at the Top 16 Draw – by beating Maccabi only if Efes also loses its Week 14 game at Unicaja. Meanwhile Maccabi, which enters the game on a four-game winning run that has seen it improve its record to 10-3, could overtake Lietuvos Rytas for the top spot if it wins and L. Rytas loses. The Israeli champs could also finish as the best second-place place team and get a top seed at the draw with a win if Real Madrid loses at home to Panathinaikos in Group C. On the other hand, Maccabi could drop to third place in the group if it loses and Unicaja wins. David Bluthenthal scored a season-high 20 to lead Maccabi to an 85-70 win over Aris when they last met in December in Tel Aviv. Both teams have undergone changes since then, the biggest being at the top for Maccabi, as Sherf has taken over the head coaching duties. Meanwhile Aris has added forward Vladimer Boisa and point guard Darius Washington. Boise could have a bigger role this week since the team’s sixth man, Rayshawn Terry, is sidelined with a leg injury. Hanno Mottola scored a season-high 22 for Aris last week and the home team may need more from him as he teams with Jeremiah Massey to challenge a deep Maccabi frontcourt led by Terence Morris and Marcus Fizer, with All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic slowly regaining his form after an injury sidelined him for much of the regular season. If Aris is not able to control the paint, it will need big things from Washington and Bracey Wright on the perimeter. That duo will match up with Vonteego Cummings, Yotam Halperin and Will Bynum. This game promises to be a thriller, with two teams still hungry for a win battling till the final minute. It will be interesting to see if Sherf’s experience in Thessaloniki can help his team overcome Aris’s home-court advantage, which would be a major coup for the visitors.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Maccabi Tel Aviv is playing much better in the second round of the regular season. To be honest, we lost badly on the road against them due to their incredible first half and it was difficult for us to come back. However, we will try to overcome our difficulties and obtain the victory to finish as high as possible in our group. Reyshawn Terry, Jeremiah Massey and Spyros Panteliadis can’t practice with the team because of minor injuries and their availability for the game will be a last-minute decision. At the same time, Hanno Mottola got the flu and he is trying hard to be in the line-up. Nobody knows until the last practice whether we can count on any of them for the game against Maccabi."
SHERF, ZVI
Maccabi Elite
"I have a long history in Thessaloniki and particularly in Aris so obviously this adds a lot of color to the game, but first off it's a key game for Maccabi that we must win. Aris made some changes and improved the team, while we carry some injuries. Aris is a very good home team. Darius Washington made a big change there, and now they play faster. Motolla always had good games against Maccabi and he played great in their win last week in Istanbul. They play better at home than on the road so we'll have to be ready for another tough game."

Players

BOISA, VLADIMER
Aris TT Bank
"Everybody knows that Maccabi is a legendary club having won the Euroleague three times in the recent years. They have a deep roster full of high-quality players ready to decide any game. However, I am confident that Aris can beat anyone at home. My team has been playing better for the last two or three games, even though we haven’t managed to reach our peak. I hope that we will build on our good performance and win such an important game against Maccabi in order to test our chemistry before the Top 16 crucial games."
SHARP, DERRICK
Maccabi Elite
"Actually, when we're going to play there in their own gym, we are the underdogs. Every team that goes there has a tough time playing. They have a great crowd. I've never seen a crowd like that in the Euroleague except our home crowd. It's going to be a tough game. We need to approach this game as the underdogs to mentally prepare ourselves and hopefully we'll do that."
Marcus Fizer - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv hung on for a thrilling 94-101 overtime victory over Aris TT Bank on Thursday night at the Alexandrio Melathron in Thessaloniki, Greece, to clinch second place in Group B. Jeremiah Massey’s tip-in with 10 seconds to go in regulation forcesd, overtime but Maccabi regained its momentum quickly and held on to win it as Will Bynum iced the game with 2 free throws with 14.1 seconds remaining. The victory saw Maccabi increase its winning streak to five straight under former Aris head coach Zvika Sherf. The Israeli champs finished the regular season with an 11-3 record – same as Group B winner Lietuvos Rytas, but remain second on a tiebreaker. Maccabi will be a second seed in Monday’s Top 16 Draw, Meanwhile Aris, which dropped its second straight home game, fell to 7-7 and finished fifth in Group B. Head coach Gorgon Herbert’s side will be in the fourth level for the draw. Marcus Fizer led six Maccabi scorers in double figures with season-highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the extra period. Terence Morris came through with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, while Esteban Batista added 12 points, Yotam Halperin 11 and Derrick Sharp and Vonteego Cummings scored 10 each. Jeremiah Massey paced Aris with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Dimitris Tsaldaris scored 19 and dished 5 assists, Bracey Wright netted 17 and Darius Washington posted 11 points and 7 assists.

In a very balanced first quarter, the guests opened the score with Fizer and Halperin converting successful drives to the basket. Aris soon responded as Wright and Massey hit shots from beyond the arc to put the hosts ahead 9-8. Despite Fizer’s domination under the rim, Aris controlled the game and took a 16-10 lead, thanks to a couple of fast breaks perfectly finished by Massey. The hosts were unstoppable and extended the deficit though Tsaldaris’s first points of the game to 23-16. In a high-tempo game with neither team playing much defense, Fizer kept adding points under the basket and created chances for both David Bluthenthal and Vonteego Cummings to make open triples and cut the gap to 27-24 at the end of the quarter.

Jeremiah Massey - Aris TT Bank Nothing changed early in the second quarter with Vladimer Boisa keeping Aris ahead and Batista netting his first basket trying to take his team closer. However, the Uruguayan center proved very efficient under the basket while Fizer was resting on the bench and managed to put Maccabi ahead with 4 points in a row. After a timeout called by Aris head coach Herbert, the hosts got tougher on defense and tied the score through Terrel Castle and Savvas Iliadis jumpers midway through the second quarter. Sharp buried another triple to help the visitors regain the lead and Batista kept Maccabi out of trouble, 38-41. Tsaldaris went twice to the line exploiting Maccabi’s early foul trouble, but Sharp beat the halftime buzzer to let his team enter the locker rooms one step ahead of the hosts, 43-45.

Aris remained scoreless in the first couple minutes of the third quarter and Maccabi pushed the deficit closer to the double digits with Halperin igniting a 5-point spurt soon capped by Fizer, 43-50. Hanno Motolla stood up and reacted with his first triple and Massey brought his team closer with a couple of free throws. The game became tougher as both teams put the emphasis on defense, even though Aris couldn’t stop Fizer, who gave his team fresh air with another successful move under the basket, 50-54. Washington tried again to resist with a lay up and Tsaldaris threatened Maccabi with another triple, but the visitors remained out of trouble as Bynum found the way to the basket twice. The Maccabi guard was quite decisive late in the quarter as his first triple extended the margin to 58-65 and forced Aris into another timeout. Castle fixed the final outcome of the quarter with a pair of free throws, 60-65, but his team has already missed 7 chances from the line in the quarter

Castle’s first triple was enough to wake up the local fans who watched their team tie the game at behind another triple by Tsaldaris, 67-67. Batista moved smoothly in the paint to put the guests in charge again as Aris lost back to back chances to get ahead. Morris grabbed an important offensive rebound and dunked the ball to create another advantage for Maccabi, 67-72. Nobody could break Aris’s offensive drought with four minutes to go. However, Aris didn’t surrender and Wright fired one in from downtown and soon Tsaldaris copied him gaining an extra free through to cap an unbelievable 7-point spurt in less than a minute that tied the game another time, 74-74. In the clutch, Fizer proved again unstoppable and started a decisive 6-point charge with Alex Garcia’s assistance to mute the masses, 74-80. Washington drove to the basket successfully and then stole the ball twice, but scored only 2 of his 4 free throws. At the other and, Fizer kept his team ahead 80-84. Wright stood up and netted a key triple to bring Aris only 1 point back, but soon Cummings scored from the line to make it 83-86. With the game on the line, Washington hit his first free throw, but intentionally missed the second one and let Massey send the game into an extra period with a tip-in, 86-86.

Despite Aris’s huge effort to tie the game, Maccabi proved decisive in the first couple of minutes of the extra time. Morris took Maccabi in his arms nailing a jumper and firing from beyond the arc. Aris couldn’t stand up and cut the damage while Halperin capped his team’s 7-point run with a shot from downtown, forcing the Aris bench to ask for a timeout at 86-94. Washington netted a lay up to raise his team’s hopes, but Sharp buried Maccabi’s third triple in the extra time, 88-97. In such an incredible game, Aris found again the strength to come back to the game as Boisa and Massey drilled one apiece from the three-point line to get within 94-96 with only 50 seconds to go. Washington lost the chance to bring Aris closer, failing to net an easy layup, and Batista scored once from the line, 94-97. The hosts had still the chance to tie the game, but Wright hit the rim from beyond the arc and gave Bynum the chance to prevail from the line as Maccabi took a true thriller.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"It was a good basketball game. It would be great game if we managed to obtain the victory. I would like to thank our crowd for the tremendous atmosphere. We made a couple of offensive mistakes, but mainly we didn’t come back in defense. This is the reason why Maccabi scored some easy baskets. We lost the game because we were not focused in defense. When you play against such teams, the second mistake kills you. Not the first, but the second. Not the offensive mistake, but the defensive. But we never surrendered. That’s what I keep as positive from this game and look forward for the upcoming games in the Top 16."
SHERF, ZVI
Maccabi Elite
"First of all, we controlled the tempo of the game. We used perfectly our inside advantage with Marcus Fizer. Today it was his best game in the whole season. Additionally, both Morris and Batista gave huge help to cover the unexpected loss of Vujcic one hour before the game. Even though we held the game in our hands, we made some mistakes, which we have to avoid in the future, and Aris forced us into extra time. In the overtime, we played very good with experience and took very mature decisions that led us into a very important win here in Alexandreio. Now, its time to wait the draw and prepare ourselves for the new challenge: to qualify for the last eight."

Players

MASSEY, JEREMIAH
Aris TT Bank
"It was a very tough game. Maccabi is a very strong team with balance between the backcourt and the front line. Today, we missed some easy layups to win the game, while Maccabi was mature enough to control the game. This loss is not harmful, but is a lesson. We have to avoid such mistakes in the near future because the upcoming games are crucial for our target."
FIZER, MARCUS
Maccabi Elite
"It was an amazing basketball game. All of us played at a very high tempo and proved really mature to take the right decisions in the crucial moments of the game. I hope we will build on this performance and keep winning in the Top 16 group. After being aware of Vujcic’s absence, everybody gave an extra effort to win this game. I did nothing more than my job to help Maccabi win this game against a legendary opponent like Aris."
