THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas hosts perennial powerhouse Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv on Thursday night at the Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania, for a promising Group B matchup. The two teams are both coming off Week 1 victories. Marijonas Petravicius stepped up with 28 points and 8 rebounds to lead L. Rytas to a 76-83 win at Armani Jeans Milano, while Yotam Halperin recorded 18 points, 9 assists and a crucial steal and assist down the stretch for Maccabi in 74-71 home win over Le Mans. Petravicius's performance gives head coach Alexander Trifunovic reasons for optimism since the team won without standout forward Chuck Eidson, who returned to practice, at least, and could debut this week. Maccabi also figures to be better this week as Will Bynum has returned to action and center Esteban Batista has had more time to practice with his new mates. L. Rytas brings a unique distinction coming into the game – it is one of a very select group of teams to have never lost to Maccabi. These teams played twice two years ago in the Euroleague, with L. Rytas winning both. L. Rytas point guard Hollis Price and backup Darrel Mitchel will have plenty responsibility in this game as they face Maccabi's duo of Bynum, Halperin and Vonteego Cummings. The rest of the Maccabi backcourt, including Derrick Sharp, will match up with the likes of Mindaugas Lukauskas and teenage shooter Martynas Gecevicius. On the forward front, the hosts have a big and deep rotation with Petravicius, Eidson, Arturas Jomantas, Matt Nielsen, Kenan Bajramovic and J.P. Batista. One of them must try to stop All-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic, not to mention Maccabi's other frontcourt talents: Marcus Fizer, Lior Eliyahu, David Bluthenthal, Terrence Morris and Batista. The effectiveness of Vujcic in the early going could set the tone for Maccabi throughout the game, especially if the yellow-and-blue are unable to run. It will be interesting to see how L. Rytas proposes to put the breaks on Vujcic. At the other end, a healthy Eidson is a live wire and could spell trouble for the visitors as he tries making a statement in his Euroleague debut. If Bluthenthal and Eliyahu struggle, teenager Omri Casspi could get a shot at guarding Eidson. Neither team will be underestimating its opponent this time in a game that promises to deliver exciting early-season action from two serious Group B contenders.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Lietuvos Rytas
"Psychologically, we are on a boom after the game in Milan. We are confident in ourselves even more after bringing back a win to Vilnius. We are obviously going to fight for victory against Maccabi. Maccabi didn't play that good against Le Mans but I have followed their games since the very start of the preseason and I can say it's a great team with great players. It's just that they still don't show consistent basketball. Maccabi is in a way a new team. They have many newcomers - Fizer, Cummings, Batista. They all are great players. Besides, Bynum is off the injured list. Katash is a young and promising coach, I'm curious to see how he's able to control the team. Vujcic, of course, is exceptional. He's an All-Euroleague player. But we must not forget the other guys, too. Every second Maccabi's trademark Sharp, Eliyahu or Halperin can step up and make huge influence on the game. Yeah, Maccabi plays really fast, but it's nothing new. They even choose players who fit their long-time style. I would call Maccabi one the best teams in Europe, no matter what people say. But stats is one thing, playing the game is another. We can really beat them. We must remain hard-working on both ends of the court. If we do this, I think we'll celebrate another win in front of our fantastic crowd."

"Our target is to play better. Everybody knows where we aim for, and what type of basketball we wish to play. We are the first to criticize ourselves, also. In the games we don't play that well. As long as we don't play the basketball I wish to see we will continue to change and evolve during this upcoming period. Rytas is a good team, very strong and athletic, and obviously in Vilnius it's not going to be an easy game. So far, we haven't played well at home, but maybe it's because of the pressure. Anyhow, it's going to be a very tough and aggressive game, and we'll have to come much more prepared."

"After our first win this year, we surely want more. Two years ago, when we had our first Euroleague season ever, we started with two losses. This year we want to start with two wins. Anyways, we have a great chance to win. Plus, I suppose this year's Maccabi is a bit weaker than the team we won over twice two seasons ago. Still, we must be careful. After a more or less poor start, they can explode in Vilnius. I think Maccabi is not yet showing its true potential. Furthermore, they have had to deal with a couple of injuries. Talking about us, we played quite well in Milan but we had our ups and downs. When playing against Maccabi rebounding becomes very, very important, especially on the offensive end. I'm sure we can beat them if we play tough defense, too. We must focus but not overconcentrate. Besides, we already know our gym will be full as always. Our supporters have always been kind of a sixth player so we feel we have to win for them".
VUJCIC, NIKOLA
Maccabi Elite
"I still remember the loss in Vilnius last time we played there, so it will give us a bigger motivation to win this time. Playing there is always tough. The fans put on a lot of pressure and push their team strong all the time. Rytas can be very dangerous, but we are still Maccabi and need to think about winning this game. It's very important to get a road win early, to gain more confidence for the future. I hope we will come back home on Friday still perfect, after a tough road game. We still have a lot of tools despite the injuries we suffer from: we just need to know how to use them."
Arturas Jomantas - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas gave its fans a major welcome to the 2007-08 Euroleague by dominating mighty Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv for a 92-74 victory in Group B in Vilnius, Lithuania on Thursday. L. Rytas remains in first place in Group B with a 2-0 record, while Maccabi dropped to 1-1. Arturas Jomantas led the winners with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Mindaugas Lukauskis added 16 points, Hollis Price had 15 while Kenan Barjamovic got 12 for L. Rytas. Will Bynum had 14 points for Maccabi while Nikola Vujcic added 12. L. Rytas used outstanding defense and the inspiration of Jomantas, Lukauskis and Bajramovic to get a 46-31 halftime lead. Maccabi did not manage to change things in the second half, as L. Rytas soon boosted its margin to 62-39 midway through the third quarter and managed to control the game until the final buzzer.

The first game of a new Euroleague season in Vilnius was greeted with ovations as Jomantas scored on a fastbreak to get the hosts on the board. He hit the game's second shot, too, and Maccabi stayed quiet until Vujcic scored inside and David Bluthenthal outside for a 4-4 tie. L. Rytas jumped ahead for good, however, as Lukauskis buried back-to-back triples to make it 10-4. Bluthenthal answered from the arc and Terrence Morris slammed to pull Maccabi within 10-9 halfway through the quarter, but the visitors couldn't stop the hosts on defense. Lukauskis and Hollis Price sparked a new 6-0 run to make it 18-11. Maccabi tried full-court man-to-man defense that led to Marcus Fizer scoring on the on the other end. Lukauskis stayed red-hot, however, drilling yet another triple, and by the time J.P.Batista had scored in the paint, L. Rytas closed the quarter up by 22-14.

Will Bynum - Maccabi EliteFizer opened the second quarter with a pair of baskets around one by Bajramovic for L. Rytas as the scoreboard showed 24-18. Fizer's third foul sent him to the bench, however, while Bajramovic stayed and continued to work hard, drawing Vujcic's second foul, too. Maccabi went to sleep on defense then as Jomantas and Darrel Mitchell spotted up for consecutive triples to open the first double-digit advantage, 31-20. The hosts kept rocking with Jomantas finishing a fastbreak, while things turned even worse for Maccabi after a timeout as Martynas Gecevicius joined the L. Rytas surge with a basket-plus-foul and L. Rytas led by 36-24. Vujcic kept feeding his teammates assists and scoring himself but L. Rytas continued a shooting barrage as Bajramovic and Mitchell pushed the margin to 44-28. Marijonas Petravicius showed his reboundind skills in the last minute of the half, grabbing 3 offensive rebounds before finishing an unbelievably long L. Rytas attack with free throws and fixing the score at 46-31 at halftime.

L. Rytas kept up the pressure after the break as Jomantas fed Matt Nielsen for a fastbreak dunk and dropped a three-pointer himself as the lead started turning insurmountable at 51-31. The visitors seemed hopeless on defense as 5 points by Price and Nielsen pushed the margin even further, 57-35. Big men Vujcic and Morris tried to change things by hitting in the paint but struggled on defense as Petravicius and Jomantas scored again to make it 62-39. The crowd went crazy now as Lukauskis beat the shotclock with a triple, forcing a Maccabi timout. The visitors still couldn't handle the L. Rytas' pick-n'-roll game as the hosts kept scoring for a crushing 68-41 advantage. Maccabi came back with a little 0-5 run as L. Rytas could not cope with tough halfcourt press but Jomantas helped L. Rytas remain resolutely in front at 72-53 after 30 minutes.

Hollis Price - Lietuvos RytasDerrick Sharp started the last quarter for Maccabi with a flashy penetration and Vujcic made a basket- plus-free throw to cut the difference to re shaken, 72-57. Maccabi worked hard on defense getting ready for a last storm. After Vonteego Cummings penetrated nicely, Maccabi was as close as 72-59 and L. Rytas, still without points in the fourth quarter, needed a timeout. Finally Lukauskis broke a minute of silence with an important triple but Cummings responded with a three-point play, 75- 62. Maccabi kept coming back patiently as Morris hit free throws but after Price nailed a three and Sharp travelled, the intrigue was killed. It all was over truly as Bajramovic dropped a difficult turnaround jumper for a decisive 80-64 lead. Efforts by Bynum were again denied by consecutive triples by Price and Lukauskis, 86-68, as L. Rytas headed firmly for team's second win this season.

"We showed character and our will to fight all 40 minutes. It may be that we let them score some points starting the last quarter but I'm glad my guys watched Maccabi's guards closely on the three-point line. The numer of offensive rebounds only reflect our passion on the court. Things we did tonight show our readiness to play. On Petravicius, I'm sure it was a lot harder for him to dominate like he did in Milan last week. He picked up two fouls in the first quarter so I suppose it punched him out of rhythm a bit. Maccabi is different in the paint so it was harder for him. We were talking before the game that Vujcic was the purest point guard on Maccabi. And, yes, I really mean point guard. Last, but not least, I can say I really missed the atmosphere people here in Siemens Arena create. We now have two wins and, after beating a famous team, are even more motivated for the future. We are on the right path."
KATTASH, ODED
Maccabi Elite
"Lietuvos Rytas played really great tonight. They were agressive in all of the 40 minutes and played quality basketball. One can see easily that they had played much more preseason games and hadn't lost any. But we, by contrast, we were really bad in the first half. No team can win the game if it loses offensive rebounding like this: 0-11. Obviously, we lacked agressiveness and couldn't convert three-pointers. I can't say who was the best in our team. Vujcic is still out of form, he's just healed from an injury. I think everything is going to be fine. The season has just started so it has to get better with time. I believe in my team; we have great talents in Tel Aviv. We surely can play better."

"Triples saved us in critical moments. The coaches told us before the game to look after Vujcic carefuly; it was so important not to let him feel his rhythm. It was also vital to stop Sharp and his threes. We had to watch out for their other small guys. Having such wonderful crowd behind us feels fantastic. We simply cannot disappoint them."
MORRIS, TERENCE
Maccabi Elite
"I just think they came out just the way we didn't. They came out aggressive, especially on the offensive end, and we couldn't match it in the first half. We did a lot better after the halftime break, but after this poor first half it was hard to catch up. We were supposed to play better, but basketball is basketball. We knew it was gonna be tough. We knew it was gonna be harder than playing at home. It didn't work for us tonight. Plus, they took so many shots, so many crazy triples. On the other hand, only some of them were that crazy. Most were open, off the screens or our mistakes. They made us pay for leaving them wide open. Overall, we simply lacked intensity."
