THE TAKE

A telling game in tight Group F takes place on Thursday when Zalgiris Kaunas hosts Real Madrid at the S. Darius and S. Girenas Sports Center. A win is crucial for both sides as they battle for a ticket to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. A win for the Lithuanian champs would keep them perfect at home and leave them at least tied for second place. However, a win for the Spanish champs would place at least tie them for first place in the group. These two sides opened the Top 16 with a clash in Madrid in which the hosts eked out an 88-85 win as Louis Bullock and Felipe Reyes scored 17 points apiece. Jonas Maciulis led Zalgiris with 21 and DeJuan Collins posted 11 points and dished 9 assists. Madrid followed that with a victory over Olympiacos, but was blasted on the road by Maccabi Elite last week. Zalgiris won its only home game, by 19 against Maccabi, before falling to 1-2 last week with a two-point overtime loss at Olympiacos. The biggest difference between this game and the meeting three weeks ago is the return of Madrid center Lazaros Papadopoulos, who teams with Reyes and Axel Hervelle to give the visitors a big frontcourt that can challenge Eurelijus Zukauskas, Mamadou N'Diaye and Paulius Jankunas inside. Zalgiris boasts a strong backcourt led by Collins, Marcus Brown and Marko Popovic, which will find that Madrid playmaker Raul Lopez is back after missing the Maccabi game with injury to rejoine his running mates Kerem Tunceri, Bullock and rookie Sergio Llull. Madrid also will hope to see sharp-shooting small forward Charles Smith bounce back from a 2-for-13 shooting night last week to generate some points on the perimeter. Tension should be high this week as the losing team knows that it will suffer a blow to its playoff hopes. Working in the hosts' favor is the fact that Zalgiris is 7-1 this season at home, where its passionate crowds always give the players a big boost. On the other hand, Madrid's experienced squad has shown it can win on the road, taking four away victories in the regular season, some at tough venues such as Istanbul and Belgrade. Like their last meeting, this game has all the signs of going down to the wire, offering 40 minutes of high-level Euroleague Basketball, where a hot night from any shooter, including veterans Brown and Smith, could make the difference not only for the victory, but also for an edge in the race for the playoffs.

Quotes Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"Of course, we would like to have more than one victory in the bucket after three games. Our situation in group standings would be much better, especially because we could have won those games. But we have what we have and nothing is lost yet. This time in Kaunas we should play better defense than we did in Madrid, if we want to win against Real. Last time Mamadou N'Diaye played offense, but he was still new in the team, so defense wasn't working well. This time we will have to defend them better and execute offense as well as we did in Madrid."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"As of today we have only lost four Euroleague games. That shows our will to get far in this comptition. We want to deserve being in the Playoffs and that will be only true adding wins. Despite our good way in the Euroleague, we have to keep on accumulating good things. We play against a strong and tough team which made life difficult for us in Madrid. We know them well and we know that to win we will have to be concentrated for 40 minutes, be solid and not to allow them any possibilities to be in the game. We have big battles ahead of us, but we will face this one as if it was the last one, as if in this game we had all our chances to advance at stake."

Players

MARKOTA, DAMIR
Zalgiris
"We had two games in the Baltic League on Sunday and Monday, but guys will be fresh, because coach Grigas used younger players in the rotations. Marcus Brown, DeJuan Collins and Jonas Maciulis were rested during those games, because they are our go-to guys in Euroleague. So I don't think that the tight schedule can affect our team in the upcoming game. Real Madrid is one of the strongest teams in Europe. They have great players in every position like Louis Bullock who is a great threat behind the 3-point arc or Felipe Reyes who sets the screens extremely well. Other guys are great, too. I would call them one of the three best teams in Europe. We lost in Madrid by 3 points, but that was a close game. They just made some shots at the end while we didn't. Though we've lost both games on the road, but it made us stronger, it showed, that we can compete on the road with the strongest teams in this league. At home we are tough to beat and we just have win both games in Kaunas now and advance to the next round."
HERVELLE, AXEL
Real Madrid
"In this Top 16 game we will face a tough duel, because we are facing a great team and we do it on the road. We travel to Kaunas with the will of playing a good game and taking the win. The win will be important to be at the top of our group and put one more win between us and Zalgiris. It would also be an almost decisive step to make the Playoffs. Zalgiris is an ambitious, balanced team who knows how to play well both on home and road games. I think that, with the help of their fans, they can have big achievments. The key to winning this game will be the one you need to win on top notch showdowns: intensity, defense, solid rebounding and few turnovers."
Felipe Reyes - Real Madrid Real Madrid took a major step toward the Quarterfinals Playoff by beating Zalgiris 69-83 in Kaunas, Lithuania on Thursday to retain a share of first place in Top 16 Group F. Madrid improved to 3-1 and took over place exclusively when Maccabi Elite lost at home to Olympiacos. Meanwhile, Zalgiris dropped to 1-3 and last place, likely needing to win its two remaining games and get help to surviv. Felipe Reyes led the winners with 18 points after helping Madrid take command earlyh. Kerem Tunceri added 16 points by hitting 5 of 6 three-pointers, including a pair to beat end-of-quarter buzzers. Louis Bullock had 15 points while Raul Lopez got 10 for Madrid. Marko Popovic led Zalgriis with 18 points, Marcus Brown added 15, Paulius Jankunas just missed a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds while Jonas Maciulis had 10 points for the hosts. Reyes and a red-hot Charles Smith combined for 17 points in 6 minutes give Madrid the first of many double-digit leads at 24-33. Tunceri's second triple in 90 seconds beat the buzzer for a 30-44 Madrid halftime lead. Jankunas and Brown fueled a 10-1 run that gave Zalgiris some hope, 40-47, after the break, but after a six-point play due to a technical foul on Zalgiris and Tunceri beating the third-quarter buzzer, too, Madrid had double-digit leads that carried it the rest of the way.

The crowd, which included legends Arvydas Sabonis and Vladimir Tkachenko seated together in the front row, was fully behind Zalgiris but Lazaros Papadopoulos opened the scoring for Madrid with a semi-hook. Brown matched him with layup, but Papadopoulos went against Eurelijus Zukauskas again and hit another basket. Zalgiris fans could cheer again as Jankunas scored a long jumper to which Brown added a go-ahead basket at 6-4. Zaukauskas extended the margin with layup before Lopez launched missile from the downtown. Madrid couldn't find ways through Zalgiris' man-on-man defense until Axel Hervelle made both free throws that cut the difference for the visitors to 12-9. Reyes challenged the smaller Maciulis with the reverse layup in the paint while an offensive foul on Goran Jurak, his third, sent Reyes to the line to hit a pair of free throws. Collins missed a three-pointer but Maciulis together with Mamadou N'diaye tapped in the ball to tie the score to 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Marcus Brown - Zalgiris KaunasReyes opened the second quarter with a pick-'n'-roll layup, but Zalgiris struck back with long jumper by Jankunas and shorter one by Popovic. Madrid answered with a go-ahead triple by Charles Smith but Brown matched him on the next possession. Madrid had found its go-to guy in Smith, however, who penetrated for a layup and drilled a huge triple to which Reyes added an easy layup as he was left alone in the paint. Zalgiris continued to struggle on the both ends as Madrid found offensive rhythm to go with stifling defense as Reyes pushed the lead to double digits at 24-33. Zalgiris called for a much-needed timeout that didn't help as Madrid came back and found Bullock wide open for another triple. N'diaye made a layup assisted by Collins and Maciulis added a difficult put-back. But neither was enough to ignite a comeback because Zalgiris also let Tunceri launch a pair of triples that fell through in silence, the second on the halftime buzzer, by which time Madrid was fully in control at 30-44.

An exchang of misses after halftime ended with Lopez landing an incredible fall-away semi hook. Collins soon assisted Jankunas for an alley-oop dunk on an inbounds play and Brown fired up the crowd with a three-pointer from the left wing. Zalgiris turned around a pair of missed free throws by Zukauskis when Brown ended up with the ball and nailed extra-long triple to which Jankunas added a layup that reduced the gap to 40-47. Madrid turned to Lopez then, and he responded with 5 points to settle down the guests. Popovic hit free throws for Zalgiris and connected from the behind the arc to maintain a seven-poin margin, 45-52. After Reyes and Popovic exchanged free throws, Jurak's putback basket at 49-54 got the crowd rocking as Madrid called a timeout. Alex Mumbru came up big then by putting back an offensive rebound on which N'diaye was called for a foul and Jurak earned a technical, his fifth and last foul, for complaining. Madrid made Zalgiris pay with a six-point possession and when Tunceri finished another quarter from downtown on the buzzer, the guests had another 12-point lead, 53-65, after 30 minutes.

Louis Bullock - Real MadridBrown opened the fourth quarter trying to spark the hosts with a difficult fadeaway jumper, but Madrid went inside to Reyes for 4 points on free throws and a short shot. Bullock and Damir Markota exchanged triples but already the hosts were showing signs of tiredness that did not herald a comeback. What's more, Tunceri continued his shootout show, nailing his fourth three-pointer. Markota dunked on the fastbreak, assisted by Maciulis, who soon made a three-pointer but missed free throws that might have helped. Regardless, by the time Hervelle scored a nice layup midway through the quarter, the difference was 64-77. Brown missed consecutive three-pointers for Zalgiris, but Popovic came on-court to make one and Jankunas added layup, but it all seemed too little, too late. Tunceri missed a free throw but made up for it with yet another triple to cap a solid victory that leaves Madrid on the doorstep of the playoffs and Zalgiris in do-or-die straits.

Head Coaches

GRIGAS, RIMANTAS
Zalgiris
"If you want to win against such a strong team as Real, you have to play much better and you have to hit the shots. We didn't, while our opponents couldn't miss from the perimeter. There was a moment when we reduced their lead to five points, but we let them grab a few key rebounds and things didn't get better. It was and interesting game but we didn't play our game and missed too many shots. It was a very tough week for us. We played a BBL game on Monday. Brown, Collins and Maciulis played with injuries. Our team needed more of a contribution from Collins. When he plays in his best shape, all the team plays much better. However, we still have our chances and nothing is lost so far. We will try to beat Olympiacos and Maccabi."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Before we came here we knew that only CSKA was able to overcome Zalgiris here in Kaunas. It's very hard to win here. But we are going to improve our game with every new day. In our first match against Zalgiris we didn't play good. A week ago we had that terrible game against Maccabi. I think that both teams are worth making it to the quarterfinals. I believe Zalgiris can surprise everyone and beat Maccabi and get to the next round."

Players

BROWN, MARCUS
Zalgiris
"It's just not working at the moment. We play as individuals, we are not a team. We've got to do a soul search if we really want to be a good team and advance. Everything went wrong today. We let them grab 13 or 14 offensive rebounds. They just killed us inside. We played well in the first quarter, but they played great in second, scoring 30 points. We cut the lead to seven, but then we stopped doing what we had done to cut that lead."
SMITH, CHARLES
Real Madrid
"It was a great game. We played great together. Everybody contributed. Zalgiris came back, but we stuck together. I think the key was our defense. We stayed aggressive, we made some important shots. In the first half we made some shots and it gave us some room. This is a nice arena, it's packed and has a great atmosphere for basketball. They got nice support, but fortunately we got a win."
