THE TAKE

Anwil Wloclawek must beat Group D co-leader Pamesa Valencia if it wants to stay alive in the fight for the elimination round. Coach Ales Pipan's Anwil snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Deutsche Bank Skyliners to improve to 2-5. Wloclawek shot 52% from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers in beating Skyliners for the second time this season. Small forward Alan Daniels led the way with 22 points while guard Andrzej Pluta added 19 points and shooting guard Gerrod Henderson chipped in 16 points. Pipan's team is two games behind Azovmash for third place in Group D and desperately needs a victory to stay in the hunt. Providing a bit of help will be newly acquired small forward Vladimir Petrovic. But the Polish team lost by 20 points at Valencia in Week Three as it shot just 32% for the game. That will have to improve for Anwil to have a chance. Valencia meanwhile remains well in the running for first place in the group after holding off Nancy to improve to 6-1 in a tie for the top spot. Coach Fotis Katsikaris's Pamesa showed resiliency after giving up a 10-point fourth quarter lead but still winning. Valencia was out-rebounded 34-25 but forced 15 turnovers and made 13-of-26 three-pointers (50%) in grabbing the victory and securing a spot in the next round. Playmaker Shammond Williams collected 26 points and 11 assists while power forward Dejan Milojevic had 15 points. Katsikaris also got excellent bench support from young big men Albert Miralles (13 points) and Victor Claver (12 points). If Valencia can match that showing, it should improve to 7-1.

Alan Daniels - Anwil Wloclawek Vladimir Petrovic scored 17 points as Anwil Wloclawek knocked off Pamesa Valencia 77-70 but still saw its hope to finish third in Group D disappear. The new acquisition Petrovic paid dividends right away as he also collected 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Andrzej Pluta had 13 points while Alan Daniels added 12 points and 13 rebounds and Zelimir Zagorac chipped in 11 points. Gerrod Henderson collected 8 points and 6 assists as well as 3 free throws and a steal in the final minute to preserve the victory, which improved Anwil's record to 3-5. Wloclawek can finish no better than fourth in Group D, however, so has to hope to be among the five best fourth-place teams across all groups in order to survive into the elimination rounds. Pamesa, meanwhile, fell to 6-2 and wasted a 29-point showing by Ruben Douglas, who hit 3 three-pointers in the final 2 minutes. Ruben Garces and Dejan Milojevic were Valencia's next-best scorers with 9 points each. Pamesa can still finish first in the group. Valencia visits Azovmash Mariupol next week and Anwil travels to Khimki.

Pluta scored first for Anwil and was matched by Stanko Barac for Pamesa. Barac again evened things at 7-7 before Zagorac knocked down a three-pointer for a 14-7 lead. It was a 17-9 advantage after a Pluta long-ball before Douglas trimmed the margin to 18-14 with a foul shot. Henderson, however, answered with a three-pointer and the hosts led 23-14 on another Zagorac basket. The cushion was cut to 23-17 after one period on Douglas's late three-ball. Petrovic started the second quarter with a three-pointer for Anwil and Patrick Okafor re-established a 28-17 lead. Valencia could not close despite one trey by Douglas and two by Albert Oliver, the second which left Pamesa down 36-29. Daniels scored back-to-back baskets and Lukasz Koszarek's long ball kept Anwil ahead 45-33. But Milojevic hit a late three-pointer to make it 45-36 at the break. Milojevic and Douglas both scored to close to 45-40 only to see Pluta knock down a trey and Petrovic re-establish the 50-40 lead. Pamesa would not roll over and it was 50-47 after Shammond Williams's three-point play and 54-50 following Mindaugas Timinkas's long ball. Douglas trimmed the margin to 59-56 going into the fourth. Petrovic opened the fourth with a three-ball to which Douglas and Ruben Garces answered to pull within 64-60. But the lead was back to 72-61 on Pluta's hoop with 2 minutes left. Douglas would not let his team die as he knocked down 2 long balls to pull within 74-67. Zagorac missed two free throws and Douglas made another triple to make it 74-70. Henderson however stepped up, nailing 2 free throws, then stealing the ball from Timinkas and making another foul shot for a 77-70 lead. Douglas missed a final three-point attempt and Anwil grabbed the win.

"I want to congratulate my players, they did a good job. They showed very tough defense, and showed that on the floor. Everyone knows Pamesa, I told my players that they shouldn’t give up and we won. We are still alive in this group and we believe that, we could go through to the next round."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Pamesa Valencia
"I would like to congratulate Anwil, they deserved this win. The score was decided in the first half when Anwil took control. We could stop them. We wanted to show good defense, but we weren’t unable to do that. Anwil in the first half gained confidence, and playing against them wasn’t easy."
