THE TAKE

A pivotal game between two group G contenders takes place on Thursday night when Real Madrid hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv at the Palacio Vistalegre in the Spanish capital. Both teams have a chance to clinch a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a win. Madrid seals a spot among the top two with a win and secures first place and home-court advantage in the best-of-three quarters if it wins and Zalgiris Kaunas beats Olympiacos in the other Group G game on Thursday. Meanwhile Maccabi would wrap up a quarterfinal spot if it wins and Olympiacos beats Zalgiris. Madrid leads the group with a 3-1 record, however its only loss came at the hands of Maccabi, 94-75 two weeks ago in Israel. The Israeli champs played arguably their best game of the season against Madrid, with big men Terence Morris, Esteban Batista and Nikola Vujcic all shining and Will Bynum scoring 22 points in 26 minutes off the bench. However Maccabi blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead at home last week to slip to 2-2 in the group, while Madrid recorded a 69-83 win at Zalgiris behind another solid effort from Felipe Reyes. Madrid will surely be optimistic against Maccabi this time around, as it will have point guard Raul Lopez available after he missed the last meeting through injury and center Lazaros Papadopoulos should be more in sync with his teammates after returning from an injury layoff rusty in Tel Aviv. Papadopoulos is a welcome return to a frontcourt that ranks at or near the bottom of all Top 16 teams in rebounding and shot blocking. Another reason for optimism is that it is unlikely that sharpshooter Charles Smith will duplicate his 2-for-13 shooting evening of that game.
