THE TAKE

A pivotal game between two group G contenders takes place on Thursday night when Real Madrid hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv at the Palacio Vistalegre in the Spanish capital. Both teams have a chance to clinch a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs with a win. Madrid seals a spot among the top two with a win and secures first place and home-court advantage in the best-of-three quarters if it wins and Zalgiris Kaunas beats Olympiacos in the other Group G game on Thursday. Meanwhile Maccabi would wrap up a quarterfinal spot if it wins and Olympiacos beats Zalgiris. Madrid leads the group with a 3-1 record, however its only loss came at the hands of Maccabi, 94-75 two weeks ago in Israel. The Israeli champs played arguably their best game of the season against Madrid, with big men Terence Morris, Esteban Batista and Nikola Vujcic all shining and Will Bynum scoring 22 points in 26 minutes off the bench. However Maccabi blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead at home last week to slip to 2-2 in the group, while Madrid recorded a 69-83 win at Zalgiris behind another solid effort from Felipe Reyes. Madrid will surely be optimistic against Maccabi this time around, as it will have point guard Raul Lopez available after he missed the last meeting through injury and center Lazaros Papadopoulos should be more in sync with his teammates after returning from an injury layoff rusty in Tel Aviv. Papadopoulos is a welcome return to a frontcourt that ranks at or near the bottom of all Top 16 teams in rebounding and shot blocking. Another reason for optimism is that it is unlikely that sharpshooter Charles Smith will duplicate his 2-for-13 shooting evening of that game. Axel Hervelle joins Papadopoulos and Reyes in trying to limit the big Maccabi trio in what could become the key to the game. Special attention should be given to Batista, who will play in Madrid for the first time. Batista was originally signed by the club from Uruguay as a teenager, but never made a first-team appearance for Madrid. Louis Bullock and provide the firepower and Lopez and Kerem Tunceri the organization for the Madrid backcourt, that will tangle with Maccabi’s Yotam Halperin, Bynum, Alex Garcia and Vonteego Cummings. Madrid’s always-efficient Alex Mumbru starts at small forward, where he will counter the duo of David Bluthenthal and Omri Casspi, either of whom can become a key force on any given night. Madrid’s 13-game Euroleague home-court winning streak makes the Spanish champs a favorite, however Maccabi’s 45.9% three-point shooting and Top-16 best 17.8 assists per game, plus the fact that the Israeli champs have won six of their last seven road games, are a few reminders that head coach Zvika Sherf’s side must be taken seriously.

Quotes Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"First of all we must forget about everything we accomplished until now to focus only on the game against Maccabi Elite. In the game we have to go for winning every quarter regardless of what we did in the previous ones. When the season started our goal was to improve as weeks went on. Now we are where we wanted to be in a moment in which we feel that, if we play at 100%, we have reached our primary goal. We have to take into account that the game against Maccabi is very important but never definitive. And that's because even if they lose, Maccabi will have options to qualify in the last game as long as some results, that you could say would be normal, take place. I expect a magical night with a real link between the team and the fans. I'd like to see a packed Vistalegre that helps us from the warm-up to the last minute of the game. I hope our fans manage to create an atmosphere as intense as the one we lived at the Nokia Arena two weeks ago. I'd love for all fans to go back home feeling that they have been an active part in the game."
SHERF, ZVI
Maccabi Elite
"We are well aware of the importance and difficulty of this game. All of our players are more or less okay and we are going there to win. I won’t talk about the odds or our chances. It won’t be a midsummer night’s stroll, but we will try to do our best. Real likes to run in the first period and open up big leads. We need to deny them that. The other important factor is defensive rebounding. Real is a good offensive rebounding team and for us that’s a weak point. All of our players need to make a big effort to box out and help Terence Morris, who is our best rebounder. In the Top 16, every team is the favorite at home, but we were also favored against Olympiacos."

"This is, without a doubt, a very important game for us because many chances of us finishing first in the group will be decided. In Tel Aviv we didn't have a good day and we played below our expectations and capabilities. We didn't do the right thing in offense nor in defense. To win we will have to play at high level, especially in defense. We reach this game full of confidence. We have won three straight games, playing well, and that shows we are in a good moment. Also we have left injuries behind and it looks like good luck is on our side. But Maccabi Elite is a tough obstacle in our way to the Playoffs. I'd highlight their great fastbreak and their ability to score from beyond the arc, something that really hurt us in Israel. We have to be focused in defense so that what happened there doesn't happen again, I think that will be the key to the game."
CASSPI, OMRI
Maccabi Elite
"This is the make-or-break game of our season. We need to give everything we have and we’re prepared to do the maximum in front of their spectacular crowd. They are not the favorites, the chances are fifty-fifty. They’ll come with motivation. For us, this is like a game for a ticket to the Final Four and it will be an experience and great fun to play there. We need to try and enjoy it, and if we do, we will win."

Head Coaches

PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"It was a tough game, with a thrilling and balanced end. They hit all the big shots in the end, but I must also say that they also won because of our mistakes in crucial moments. I must congratulate Maccabi Elite for this win, and I also want to congratulate my players for their hard work. This game can help us to learn a lot of things. Now we must be confident about the game against Olympiacos in Greece. Even when we feel sad now, I have as much confidence as possible in this team."
SHERF, ZVI
Maccabi Elite
"Both teams played a difficult game, with a lot of pressure, and played it to the limit. It was a great game and any of us could have won tonight. I want to congratulate Real Madrid for their effort tonight. I am very happy with this great win, that allows us to reach the end of the Top 16 with a lot of chances to win our group."

Players

HERVELLE, AXEL
Real Madrid
"It is a shame, because we had this win on our hands. We made some mistakes in the final minutes, but they played well and their biggest experience was a key factor. Now we must beat Olympiacos, a great team, as it showed today. We must play like we did against Zalgitis and show that we want to be in the Quarterfinal Playoffs."
MORRIS, TERENCE
Maccabi Elite
"It was a tough game, very intense until the final seconds. I managed to play well all game long. We arrive to the last round of the Top 16 with a lot of chances to finish first, even when Olympiacos beat Zalgiris and balanced the group a little bit. I am happy with the game I had, but the most important thing for me is helping the team as much as I can. We managed to beat Madrid, one of the best teams in Europe."
SHARP, DERRICK
Maccabi Elite
"It was a great game decided with big shots at the end. It was an important win for us. We were mentally strong, played tough and I must say that this is one of the best game I have ever played in. I guess that the "Team of Heroes" showed up in Madrid tonight."
