THE TAKE

Partizan Belgrade will look to correct a blemish on the club’s records when it hosts Real Madrid on Wednesday night. The mighty Serbian champs have never beaten Madrid in 12 games all-time. Partizan showed spirit last week as it came back to challenge late before losing 61-60 at Efes Pilsen. Head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s side was led by its one-two punch in the paint as power forward Novica Velickovic totaled 16 points and 8 rebounds while big man Stephane Lasme amassed 11 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Now the club will look for guards Milenko Tepic and Aleksandar Rasic to step up at home and lead Partizan to a monumental win. Meanwhile Madrid opened its season with a one-sided win over Panionios, 87-66. Quinton Hosley looked sharp in his Euroleague debut and Felipe Reyes was solid as usual to lead a team effort that saw seven different players score at least 7 points. Now head coach Joan Plaza’s men will try to duplicate that performance in the Serbian capital. It surely won’t be easy to dominate Partizan in Belgrade since Vujosevic’s teams are known for their toughness, even when the coach needs to look to untested reserves from the bench. Partizan has all the tools it needs to challenge Reyes, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Jeremiah Massey inside as it can turn to the 2.29 meter Slavko Vranes and Zarko Rakocevic for help. Where the hosts will need to come up big is on the perimeter, where players like Louis Bullock, Pepe Sanchez, Raul Lopez and Sergio Llull present a mix of speed and experience that will be tough for Partizan to match. Nevertheless, Tepic, Rasic, sharpshooter Uros Tripkovic and veteran Petar Bozic possess a certain height advantage over their counterparts. Perhaps Partizan’s biggest challenge will be finding a way to use its backcourt size to its advantage without getting burned by Bullock and co. It’s worth noting that Partizan has won three of its last four home games against Spanish teams, losing only to Madrid last season. History still makes Madrid the favorite, but Partizan has proven that it shan’t be underestimated and Madrid will no doubt know that and come prepared for what could end up bein gone of the most entertaining games of the week.

GAME NOTES

Partizan Belgrade

  • Sharpshooter Uros Tripkovic recorded the lone blocked shot of his Euroleague career at Real Madrid in January 2006. He blocked the shot of center Venson Hamilton.
  • Center Slavko Vranes' best game last season came against Real Madrid, when he recorded 7 points, 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot in 14 minutes.

Real Madrid

  • Power forward Felipe Reyes needs only 13 rebounds to reach 500 for his Euroleague career. He would become the 24th player in competition history to achieve that feat.
  • Real Madrid is 12-0 all-time against Partizan Belgrade. In nine of those 12 victories, Madrid has won by double figures.
  • Point guard Pepe Sanchez scored his Euroleague career-high of 20 points with Unicaja at Partizan in the regular season final of the 2006-07 season.
  • Guard Louis Bullock achieved his Euroleague career-high in steals, 6, against Partizan in November 2005.
  • Forward Alex Mumbru scored in double figures in both meetings against only two teams last season – Partizan and Lottomatica Roma. He averaged 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2 assists against the Serbian champs last season.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Real has everything that makes one team a great team: History, tradition, coaching and excellent players. They are extremely well balanced at each position. And they play at the level of their tradition. A high level. We will try with a weaker team than we had last seasons to beat Real on our court. I am not quite sure, but I think it could be our first win over Real in Partizan history. That makes our motivation bigger."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Partizan is a team with long tradition and history. We have to respect them a lot as they normally get good results in European competitions, especially when playing at home. Traditionally, they are a team that produce new players with great quality and talent and that is the foundation of Partizan this year, too. Young, domestic players with quality. Up until now in the season, Partizan is playing aggressive and intense in defense, while in offense they try to control the ball with long possessions and try to avoid turnovers so that the rival cannot run the fastbreak."

Players

BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan
"I think they are great. A terrific team with great players. I am sure Real is stronger than they were last season. It is hard to say what their main weapons are. They are strong under the boards and in shooting and defense too. Even though the game is scheduled at our court, Real is the absolute favorite. It may be surprising, but that makes our position easier. We are not under pressure. If we play at 200% and with help from our fans as we usually do, Partizan could produce a miracle."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"At home, Partizan is one of the most dangerous teams in the competition. The atmosphere in their arena is impressive. Helped by their crowd, the Serbian team always has an extra that makes it be very competitive and allows it to play any rival at the same level. Partizan is a balanved team in all positions. They are a team that, year after year, produce new talents that keep Partizan in the first level of European basketball. Not only we will be facing a group of good players, but also a philosophy of understanding the game, a tradition and that alone explains the challenge we have ahead of us."
Aleksandar Rasic - PartizanIt was lucky number 13 for Partizan Belgrade as the Serbian champs came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Real Madrid 81-77 for the first time in club history on Wednesday night at Pionir Arena. All five starters scored in double figures as head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s men held on with a gritty performance that ended a run of 12 straight losses to Madrid. Parizan improved to 1-1 in Group D and will host Armani jeans Milano in the Serbian capital next week. Madrid dropped to 1-1 and will host Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow next week. Partizan took a big early lead as Milenko Tepic and Aleksandar Rasic heated up in the first quarter and remained on top 44-38 at halftime. Quinton Hosley scored 7 straight points in a 0-13 third-quarter run as Madrid took its first lead. However Rasic, Novica Velickovic and Cedomir Vitkovac led Partizan back to tie it and set up a thrilling fourth quarter. Strong defense and clutch triples from Tepic and Rasic put Partizan back on top, but the game would remain close till the end. In the last minute, the hosts stayed focused and Hosley committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Uros Tripkovic that allowed Partizan’s fans to celebrate early. Rasic finished with 18 points, Tepic scored 16 and dished 5 assists, Velickovic added 13 points, Stephane Lasme 12 and Vitkovac 10. Sergio Llull came off the bench to pace Madrid with 19, Hosley recorded 14 points and 8 rebounds, Felipe Reyes added 11 points and Lazaros Papadopoulos had 10 for the visitors, who shot 2 for 12 from downtown.

Sergio Llull - Real Madrid Slavko Vranes established his defensive presence with an early block of Papadopoulos that led to a Lasme basket. But Papadopoulos came back to draw a foul from the Partizan center and even the scoring from the line. Vitkovac displayed his talents with a triple and then a baseline move, while on the other end Hosley produced a pair of baskets with some nice athletic moves. A pull-up jumper by Rasic and a minute later a Tepc triple after a Vranes offensive rebound gave the hosts a 14-6 advantage. Real Madrid head coach Joan Plaza called a timeout to talk things over, but it didn’t change much as Tepic banged in another three to give Partizan a double-digit lead. An Axel Hervelle free throw and a Raul Lopez basket helped wake the visitors up before Tepic made his presence felt with another basket. Llull came off the bench and hit twice for Madrid before Lasme picked up a loose ball and darted in for a slam that gave Partizan a 21-13 lead after 10 minutes.

Reyes and Jeremiah Massey ignited Madrid at the onset of the second period, but patience and good passing slowed things down for Partizan. A pair of Rasic free throws and a Velckovic three-pointer kept the hosts in control. Velckovic then dished to Zarko Rakocevic as Partizan went up 28-19. Rasic fired in another three from the top of the key to get the home fans going as Madrid took another timeout. Free throws by Llull and a Massey basket were good signs for Real, however Velickovic started to dominate the offensive glass, reaping 2 baskets and 2 free throws off others’ misses. Pepe Sanchez fed Llull for a slam and then a Hosley steal led to a Llull layup as Madrid cut the gap to 37-32. Tepic sliced the Madrid defense for a basket before Papadopoulos dropped in a hook shot. Another Rasic three got the home fans singing and then he set Rakocevic up for a slam before Papadopoulos ended the half with the hosts on top 44-38.

Milenko Tepic - Partizan Tepic opened the second-half scoring from the free-throw line, but Hosley bettered him at the other end with a basket-plus-foul, which sent Vitkovac to the bench with 4 fouls. Hosley was just getting started. He drew an foul on the offensive glass and hit 2 free throws and then stole the ball and threw down a windmill slam to tie the game at 45-45. A Reyes hook gave Madrid its first lead of the game, leading to a Partizan timeout. But that didn’t solve the suddenly ice-cold Belgrade attack, which remained scoreless for four minutes before Lasme dunked in transition. During that time, Louis Bullock heated up and eventually put Madrid up 47-55. Rasic battled for a basket and then 2 free throws to keep the hosts in the game. Velickovic converted another offensive rebound to a score and then Vitkovac scored on the break to cap an 8-0 charge that tied the game at 55-55. Madrid used a timeout to regroup after which Papadopoulos scored inside, but a Tripkovic jumper kept it tied. Llull in transition gave Madrid a slim 57-59 lead heading into the fourth period.

Llull came through with a steal and slam, but Partizan continued to fight hard on both ends. A big block by Vranes on Axel Hervelle was followed by a three-chance attack that turned into a three-point play for Vitkovac as Partizan stayed within 1. Tepic then fired in a long three to make it 65-63 only to see Llull do the same and restore the lead to Madrid. Rasic stepped up and hit another three as the hosts and the crowd regained their confidence. Lasme stretched the lead to 70-66 from the line midway through the period. The momentum remained with the hosts as Lasme hit a circus shot. Vitkovac fouled out with four minutes remaining, but the Partizan defense remained strong and denied Madrid. Reyes drew a foul and made 2 from the line to get his within 3 before Tripkovic and Bullock traded baskets making it 74-71 with less than two minutes to go. Tepic hit a clutch three and Rasic poked his hand in for a big steal that ignited the crowd. However a turnover resulted in another fast-break basket by Llull that kept Madrid alive. Bullock drew a foul, but missed a rare free throw. Forced to foul, Hosley wrapped Tripkovic up and was whistled for an unsportsmanlike foul, practically gifting the game to Partizan. Free throws by Tripkovic and then Velickovic made it 81-74 with 20 seconds to go as the home fans started to celebrate their first win ever over Real Madrid.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"This is a miracle win for us, and it came with a lot of help from our fans. First of all, I have to thank all of them for their support. Real Madrid is a stronger team than us, but this is basketball, a game in which you can take advantage of your opponents' weaknesses. We lost control at both ends early in the third quarter, but we managed to overcome that situation. I am satisfied with this win, but there is no time to celebrate. We are already thinking about our next opponent in the Adriatic League, and then about the next Euroleague game against Armani Jeans Milano. It is nice to get such a big win in our first Euroleague game in Belgrade this season."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Everytime we come to Belgrade, I say that us or Partizan has the talent to reach the Final Four. Congratulations to Partizan on its really good game tonight. We did not shoot well from three-point range and had a lot of problems to rebound, too. We are still able to stand up and improve our game during the season. We learned a lesson tonight with this loss against Partizan and I am sure we will play better in our next game."

Players

LASME, STEPHANE
Partizan
"We played with six players and Real Madrid had just five tonight. Our fans were great and they helped us to beat Madrid tonight. I think that we have an extremely strong team and we are ready to show that throughout the season. This is just the very beginning for us."
TEPIC, MILENKO
Partizan
"We knew that there was only one way to win this game - to play with heart. Our goal was to limit Real Madrid's offensive rebounds and fast breaks. We managed to do it all. We are playing a lot without a classic center this season, and that means we must be fast in the paint at both ends. Our game should improve in each and every game. We gave 200% to win the game tonight."
MUMBRU, ALEX
Real Madrid
"Partizan rebounded really well tonight and that was the key to the game. They hit a lot of key three-pointers in the second half and that was decisive for the outcome of the game. Congratulations to Partizan for this win."
