THE TAKE

Brose Baskets Bamberg will try to shake off an unlucky start to the season when Real Madrid comes to town Wednesday for Group C action. Brose Baskets may be 0-2, but both its losses were heart-breakers. The German champs fell to Chorale Roanne st home on a buzzer-beater in Week 1 and then hung around until the final minute before coming up short at defending Euroleague champion Panathinaikos last week. Injuries have affected head coach Dirk Bauermann's side. Center Luke Schenscher has not played this season and this week the team could be without forward Ademola Okulaja, leaving Darren Fenn, Chris Ensminger and rookie Tim Ohlbrecht as the team's only players taller than 2 meters. Real Madrid has looked strong in beating Fenerbahce on the road and Lottomatica at home to grab a share of first place in the group. Head coach Joan Plaza's team has excelled on the offensive end with efficient basketball. Madrid has made 43.8% of its three-pointers and leads the league with just 8 turnovers per game. The catalysts so far include Charles Smith, Axel Hervelle and Raul Lopez, who is tied for the league-lead in steals. Brose Baskets deliberate style of play has seen it score the fewest points in the league this season, but it has also allowed Bauermann to stretch his team as far as it can go. Small forward Predrag Suput and point guard Steffen Hamann are two of his most important offensive weapons, though they will be challenged this week. Suput could find himself going against Alex Mumbru, while Hamann could face either Lopez, Smith or even defensive whiz Michalis Pelekanos. On the flip side, Madrid will try to dominate the paint through Lazaros Papadopoulois, Felipe Reyes and Blagota Sekulic, knowing how limited the hosts' big-man rotation is. However if Okulaja is fit, that could prove to be a big boost for Brose Baskets, not just in manpower but also in leadership. Though on paper this team has been out manned going into each of its games so far, Brose Baskets has found a way to challenge and especially at home, this week should be no different. Although it is unlikely that this will be a high-scoring affair, it should still be a thriller nonetheless, as Brose Baskets looks to avoid a daunting 0-3 start and Madrid looks to keep a share of the group lead.

Quotes Head Coaches

BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"We're confident. We think we have a chance. Obviously, they're the favorites, but that doesn't mean anything in 40 minutes of basketball. We think we did a really good job in Athens (against Panathinaikos). We played them better than anybody else in a long time in Athens. After losing two games at the buzzer, and against Panathinaikos in Athens, We're really satisfied with how we are playing. We're disappointed with the results. But we're convinced if we keep playing at this level that we will win a game, sooner rather than later - hopefully on Wednesday. If we keep playing how we are, the results will take care of themselves."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"Brose Baskets is playing good basketball in the German League, where they lead the standings, and in the Euroleague they have lost their first two games by a slim margin of points, so we know that this is a dangerous rival, even moreso when they play at home. They are a team with lots of physical potential, very strong and fast on the perimeter, and tough inside. For those reasons, we'll have to e ready to play an intense game for 40 minutes. We head to Germany with the idea of bringing back what would be our third Euroleague victory, something that would give us some peace of mind in this competition, considering that in a group as even and difficult as ours, you can't make any mistakes."

Players

FENN, DARREN
Brose Baskets
"We just want to stick to our game plan of focusing on defense first. If we play our defense, we can beat anyone. Obviously, we're disappointed about losing in Athens because we feel we can play with anyone in Europe. I would have liked to have won that game. But we have proved that we can hang with the best teams. You never feel good about a loss, but playing as good as we did in Athens is definitely a good sign for the rest of the season. We don't really think we are playing our best basketball. And it is not the right time to play your best. We want to keep improving and then be our best come January, February and March and move into the playoffs. I think the sky's the limit for us."
LLULL, SERGIO
Real Madrid
"It's a very important game for us, considering that if we can beat Brose Baskets we'll achieve our third straight win in the Euroleauge, something that will give us more confidence in the competition and will put us ina good position in our group. Despite the fact that we can't have all our players due to injuries, I believe we are improving our play, which we could see in parts of our last Spanish League game. What we want to do is continue along those lines and keep improving little by little as a team. First, we face a Brose Baskets for whom this game will be of vital importance after having lost their first two Euroleague decisions."
Felipe Reyes - Real Madrid Real Madrid stayed unbeaten in Group C and joined Panathinaikos atop the standings by downing Brose Baskets 49-59 on the road in Bamberg, Germany on Wednesday night. Real Madrid improved to 3-0 and sits atop the standings while Brose Baskets dropped to 0-3 after registering its second home loss in Group C. Felipe Reyes showed he is recovered from his back problems, as he led the winners with a double-double of 21 points on 8-of-9 two-pointers and 12 rebounds. Charles Smith added 15 for Real Madrid, which was without both Venson Hamilton and star guard Louis Bullock. Nobody scored in double digits for Brose Baskets, as Steffen Hamann led the hosts with 9 points. Even with that, Ademola Okulaja hit a triple for a 31-30 Brose Baskets lead at the half. Real Madrid allowed 18 points in the second half, while Reyes and Smith led the guests to yet another impressive road win.

Bamberg started with Okulaja on the bench with Chris Ensminger in his place. Reyes started the scoring with an inside basket for the guests but Demond Greene, Darren Fenn and Steffen Hamann all drained three-pointers as Bamberg built a 9-4 lead early. Reyes scored his fourth straight basket for Madrid in cutting the deficit to 9-8. Greene hit two foul shots following an intentional foul and the German champions pushed the lead to 15-10 on Mark Dickel's steal and break-away lay-up. But Kerem Tunceri and Alex Hervelle both came off the bench to drain three-pointers in the final minute - Hervelle's at the buzzer - to cut Bamberg's lead to 17-16.

Steffen Hamann - Brose BasketsSmith continued the three-point barrage straight off in the second, giving the Spanish powers the lead 17-19. And a Smith driving lay-up made it 17-21 and brought on a Bamberg timeout. But Smith and Tunceri went back-to-back from long range to open a 21-27 gap. Bauermann's Germans worked hard defensively and held Real scoreless on six possessions, knotting the game at 27-27 on Hamann's two foul shots. Herville knocked down a turn-around jumper to stop the drought. And after Dickel and Reyes swapped foul shots, Okulaja gave the hosts the lead 31-30 with a three-pointer with a minute left. And that was the scoreline at the break as Michalis Pelekanos missed a trey at the buzzer.

Fenn knocked down a three-pointer to open the third quarter scoring and a 34-30 lead. And the Spaniards were unable to find any rhythm and didn't score a basket until Lazaros Papadopoulos hit a left-handed hook shot for 34-32 with six minutes left in the period. But Bamberg were unable to take advantage of Madrid's struggles as they went six possessions without scoring and another Smith three-pointer gave Madrid the lead 34-35. Tim Ohlbrecht's dunk pulled the Germans to within 37-39 only to see Real push the margin to 37-42. It could have been more but Madrid missed five of eight foul shots. Hamann's layup made it 39-42, but Reyes scored another inside basket for the 39-44 scoreline going into the fourth.

Kerem Tunceri - Real MadridReyes continued his superb performance with a jumper to begin the fourth. Another Reyes jumpshot gave Joan Plaza's team a 39-48 advantage, forcing Bauermann to call a timeout with just over seven minutes remaining. Spanish internationals Mumbru and Reyes hit jumpers to increase the lead to 41-52. It was still a 10-point game - 45-55 - on Tunceri's foul shot with three minutes left. Okulaja then missed four straight free throws after two Madrid lane violations. Reyes missed two foul shots of his own but Bamberg couldn't take advantage as they were unable to knock down their three-pointers. Smith's two free throws made it 47-59 with less than a minute remaining. And that's how it ended.

Head Coaches

BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"It's not like we were playing against a nobody team. You can't expect to be given anything. But it was really tough to get inside. We have to control the ball better."
PLAZA, JOAN
Real Madrid
"I told my players that we played our worst game of the season. Missing 12 free throws means you're not in the game. Losing 20 balls means you're not in the game. I'm disappointed in my players. I told them I hope this will only be one game because we will lose other games if we play like this. We're happy that nobody on Brose scored more than 10 points and that we dominated the rebounds. And it was good to have Felipe back. He's really beginning to play at his full capacity. But for playing our worst game, I'm happy we won."

Players

ENSMINGER, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"We only scored 49 points. We couldn't put points on the board. We played strong defense but we need to find ways to take advantage of that. I mean 18 points [in the second half] is not enough. They are a good team and we knew that. But we can't afford any letups. It's just about us getting over the hump. We know we have a chance in every game. We're in a tough group. We just need that first win."
MUMBRU, ALEX
Real Madrid
"Felipe is really important for us. He was injured one week but really came back strong tonight. Now we're 3-0 and it was very important for us to stay at the top of the standings. We didn't play that well, that's true. But what is most important is we got the win."
